Chanie attended the school for two years and ran away on October 16, 1966. He was headed home when he died of exposure on October 23, 1966 on the railway tracks near Redditt, Ontario, the home of his uncle. #1 Chanie is the namesake of Trent University’s Wenjack Theatre and the Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies – as an homage to his flight to safety, UNDERGRADUATE and the safe space created for Indigenous knowledges, perspectives and communities at Trent.
