Online LHCP 2021 Goal a year ago was to hold an in-person, or mixed, conference in 2021 ● Fully online always kept as a fallback ● In-person/mixed option maintained as long as possible, until funds would have to be irrevocably committed ● Decision made at the end of February to go fully online again Thanks to IUPAP and CERN support, no-fee attendance possible once more Successful format developed for LHCP2020 was very largely re-used, with only minor updates ● Talks scheduled Mon-Fri 12.00-18.30 CEST with two 15’ breaks ● Short Saturday closing plenary 14.00-16.20 CEST ● Parallel sessions with seven-fold parallelism ● Poster session split into a (European) morning and evening session – presenters specified for which session(s) they would be present Technology used the CERN-indico-integration with Zoom, fully possible with standard Zoom meetings this time (webcast available for plenaries) ● All sessions recorded, provided speaker confirmed OK ● Live closed-captioning by a commercial company for all plenary sessions and selected parallel sessions (could be increased on request) – fidelity improved over automatic captioning (used for remaining sessions) ● Mattermost for discussions outside sessions (very little used) Dave Charlton (Birmingham) – 19 August 2021 3

Closing remarks LHCP 2021 was again held fully online, hosted by the Paris team once more ● Waived registration fee thanks to support of CERN and IUPAP ● A very large and geographically broad attendance ● Thanks to all of the organising team, especially Roberto Salerno and Giovanni Marchiori, the “local” co-chairs ● We plan to “return” to Paris for LHCP in a future year Preparations for LHCP 2022 in Taipei, 16-21 May, are underway ● Anticipating to be a mixed in-person/remote meeting ● Aiming for a high fraction of in-person attendees Many thanks to IUPAP for their continuing generous support for LHCP ● IUPAP funding will be targetted to support participation of early-career scientists, including students, from a broad community, to attend, give talks and present posters ● We want to re-establish this tradition in 2022 after the hiatus, helping support the crucial strong engagement of early-career scientists in LHCP Dave Charlton (Birmingham) – 19 August 2021 8
