Kenmore Soccer News Volume 13, Number 6 Kenmore/Tonawanda, New York June 2020 Finishing the 2019-2020 Season and Moving Forward to the 2020-2021 Season Since mid-March we have all found ourselves living in circumstances no one could have fore- seen. Everything has changed….from home-schooling, to on-line church, to cancelled family outings, to a loss of sports, to a loss of jobs, to stores being closed, ……..and the list goes on and on. Part of the changes for youth soccer were the cancellation of the summer season of the Buf- falo/WNY Junior Soccer League, the Thruway League, and the National Premier League, the 3 venues where our teams had planned to play matches from May-July. While we are all disappointed, it is something outside the control of any of us. Kenmore Soccer has been working diligently to mitigate the impact of these changes. We want to keep our players and families active and engaged during this challenging period. We have implemented numerous new activities, including: The initiation of weekly on-line training sessions via Zoom until such time as we are allowed to start outdoor team sessions which we hope will be in late June, Weekly Yoga and Boxing workout sessions for players and parents, A FIFA 20 tournament for our players (see page 2), and Scheduling friendly matches with several other large clubs, to begin as soon as matches are permitted, and to continue into the fall for those who are able. At the same time, we are beginning to plan for the 2020-2021 season, when hopefully the world will return to a more normal time, and we can operate all of the programming we tra- ditionally have had from September-July. In conjunction with that, we are opening player registration on Monday June 1st. We en- courage parents to re-register as quickly as possible. As in past years, fees are not charged or due until you accept a roster spot, but immediate re-registration will greatly assist us in finalizing our 2019-2020 season finances. When a roster spot is accepted, all re-registrations will have a checkbox to mark for a credit of $55 to be posted to their account for the league costs we did not incur this season. The re-registrations will help us determine who is not returning, and they will receive a check for the $55 in late July. The 2020-2021 season will also see a reduction in the club fee from this season beyond the $55 credit, as we will plan to enact some cost-cutting measures and increase sponsorship revenue. There are some organizations that may not survive the current circumstances, but Kenmore Soccer remains strong and is committed to continue offering our community programs that ensure our players have the opportunity to achieve whatever competitive level matches their commitment. We are all eager to get back to a more normal and predictable time, and we appreciate your support during this extraordinary period. 1

Kenmore Soccer Celtic FC Camp Scheduled for July 20th-24th Back-Up Date—August 10th-14th On-Line Registration Now Open Kenmore Soccer is pleased to once again welcome the staff of the Celtic FC Academy in Glasgow, Scotland to serve as instructors for our Summer Camp. The high level and professionalism they bring is unsurpassed in our area. Camp is currently scheduled to operate during the week of July 20th-24th from 9:00am-3:30pm each day. However, we have booked a back-up week of August 10th-14th in case the current restrictions involving recreational activities and inter- national travel preclude the July dates. Players born from 2002-2013 are eligible to participate in the camp. Last summer’s camp drew 85 participants, and feedback from campers and the Celtic FC staff was extremely positive. Registration is now open on-line through www.kenmoresoccer.com. When you log into your account you will click on the “new program available” icon, and then select the Celtic FC camp. The Celtic FC camp is just one of the many benefits that Kenmore Soccer receives through our partnership with Celtic FC, the fourth largest soccer club in the world. Other benefits are team trips to their Academy in Scotland, their annual Elite Camp in Albany for higher-level players, access to their extensive coaching curriculum, and monthly Internet coaching sessions with their staff. Sign up now for the most outstanding soccer experience offered in this area. We look forward to another exciting summer camp. Note: In the event that foreign travel restrictions preclude the Celtic FC staff from com- ing, our staff will operate the camp and fees will be reduced to $95. In the event that the camp cannot be held, fees are fully refundable. 11 Must-Haves when Choosing an ID Camp By Chris Bart-Williams When it comes to getting noticed by coaches, soccer players with collegiate aspirations know that attending ID camps can be a terrific way to showcase their unique talents – and hopefully earn a coveted roster spot with a college team. To get the most out of ID camp opportunities, deciding whether to participate should be about more than simply choosing dates that fit your schedule. In- stead, families should evaluate the pros and cons of each ID camp and keep the bigger picture of their college goals in mind when making these important decisions. Ultimately, a practical approach to choosing ID camps will yield better results – and will be easier on your wallet! – than filling your calendar with commitments. So, how should you approach the decision-making process and what criteria should you prioritize when creating your strategy? Here are eleven important questions to ask yourself before selecting an ID camp. 1. What’s the coach’s philosophy? Does it align with yours? 2. Are you comfortable with the personalities of the coaching staff? 3. What’s the team’s playing style? Have you experienced this type of environment before? 4. Do you know how many seniors will be graduating and potentially opening up spots for un- derclassmen? What positions do they play? Did they start? 5. Does the school’s geographic location match your wish list? Furthermore, are you comforta- ble being this far from/close to home? 6. Are your academics up to the school’s standards (i.e. do you have a strong chance of being accepted academically)? 7. Will you enjoy the climate in which the school is located? Do you prefer to play in warm or cold weather? 8. What’s your budget for ID camps – and for other recruiting expenses like campus visits, re- cruiting advisers, etc.? Does this camp fit into your recruiting plan? 9. Have you spoken to your coaches and/or guidance counselors to confirm that you’re a play- er the school would ultimately want to recruit? 10. How will you get feedback after the camp? Do you have a coach or recruiting advisor who can get an evaluation of your performance if the coach doesn’t (or can’t) contact you directly? 11. Has anyone you know attended this camp before? What was their experience? Was the coaching staff actively involved or did they congregate at one or two fields with already com- mitted and/or current players? ID camp selection requires careful thought and consideration. While it can be tempting to try to get more exposure by attending multiple ID camps, families should evaluate both the camp and the college before making a decision to participate. Like most things in life, a little bit of pre-planning can save you significant time, money and regrets in the long run. Taking a measured approach and carefully selecting just a handful of camps can create positive momentum in your recruiting pro- cess. 4
National Premier League Expands for 2020-2021 The National Premier League is expanding its footprint in our area for the 2020-2021 season, by adding a 2nd Division to its Great Lakes Alliance. The league will now have an “elite” and a “premier” division, with teams from western New York, western Pennsylvania, and northeastern Ohio in each division. The league operates under U.S. Club Soccer, of which Kenmore Soccer is one of a few members from this area. We had two teams participate this season, and plan to have a few more joining next year. As one of the top youth league offerings, it affords Kenmore Soccer players the highest level of competition available. More 2019-2020 Area Youth Soccer Events Cancelled/Changed While many area tournaments continue to maintain hope of holding their soccer events this summer, cancellations and changes continue. Clarence Soccer has recently cancelled their annual tournament that was scheduled this year for July 17th -19th. Niagara-Pioneer has moved their event from July 11th-12th to August 2nd-3rd at Fort Niagara State Park, in the hope that large events can operate by then. Lancaster Soccer still hopes to hold their tournament on July 25th-26th. Most tournaments in the Rochester area have cancelled as well, with only the Greece United, Gates Met- ros, Greece Cobras, and Brockport Soccer events still planned for late July. It has been a difficult year for youth soccer, but hopefully the 2020-2021 season will bring some normali- ty, and clubs that depend on tournament revenue to fund their activities will survive to see that season. A Use for Gently Used Uniforms and Equipment Due to the current health concerns and limitations involving International travel, the mission trip to Africa led by Evans Christian from our 15U Kenmore Blue Devils team is being resched- uled to 2021. If you have gently used uniforms or equipment, and are willing to hold them, we will com- mence collection next winter, and will publicize dates, times, and locations at that time.
