MEDICAL UPDATE – CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) Situation Report #98 July 29, 2020 This report has been adjusted based on current information provided by state officials. Other related data can be found on our Early Alert COVID 19 Dashboard and/or Resource Center. CURRENT STATISTICS AND MEDICAL UPDATES: • There are now 16,670,000+ cases of COVID-19 worldwide, with over 659,000+ confirmed deaths, which is a case fatality rate of 4.0%. • The United States is now reporting 4,328,655+ cases of COVID-19 with 141,428+ confirmed deaths which is a case fatality rate of 3.3%. INTERNATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: Austria: • St Wolfgang, a popular resort town in Austria has ordered restaurants and clubs to close early and urged people to avoid going out as it fights a new outbreak of the coronavirus. • The country is reintroducing mandatory face masks again in supermarkets, smaller grocery stores, post offices and banks. Australia: • The northern Australian state of Queensland will be closed to people from the Sydney area beginning August 1st. • Queensland residents returning home will also be required to spend 14 days in hotel quarantine at their own expense. Belgium: • Belgian Prime announced new measures to try to curb the coronavirus as the country grapples with a "worrying" upsurge in cases. • Beginning Wednesday, Belgians will be allowed to see a maximum of five people outside of their families, reducing the permitted "social bubble" from 15, and working from home will be "strongly recommended" by the government. China: • China's National Health Commission announced the latest coronavirus data for the country. • It has reported 101 new cases, up from 68 previously. This is the highest daily case count since mid-April. • Of the new cases, 89 were found in the far western region of Xinjiang where mass testing is under way. France: • France has reported 2,551 new confirmed cases over the past three days, the country's health department said, which means a daily average of 850 over that period. • That is slightly lower than the 1,000-plus figure published on Thursday and Friday but higher than the 677 daily average seen since the beginning of the month. Germany: • The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 340 to 205,609. • Travellers returning to Germany from areas that are currently high risk for the novel coronavirus are to be tested in the near future. future • The health minister will require those arriving from high-risk areas will be required to test which will be provided free of charge. • Bavaria will set up coronavirus test sites at its two biggest railway stations as well as key points on motorways, the leader of the southern German state has announced, as fears grow that summer travel could spark a new wave of infections. • On top of existing test centres at Bavarian airports, tests will now be offered at the Munich and Nuremberg train stations, as well as on three major motorway routes near the border Greece: • Greece has announced it will open six of its ports to tourist cruise ships starting on August 1st, after they were banned because of the coronavirus pandemic. • The country will open the ports in Athens, Rhodes, Heraklion on Crete, Volos, Corfu and Katakolon. • According to the Tourism Minister, all cruisers are welcome in Greece. Hong Kong: • Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam is warning the city is on the brink of a large-scale outbreak of coronavirus. • Strict new measures to curb the spread of the virus have been put into place, with a ban on gatherings of more than two people, the closure of restaurants for all but takeaway and mandatory mask wearing. • Quarantine measures for ship and airline crews have also been tightened. Italy: • Italy's Parliament approved a request by the Prime Minister to extend the state of emergency until October 15th, expanding his government's powers. • Opposition parties had objected, however the measure passed by 157 votes to 125 in the 319-seat chamber. Lebanon: • Lebanon has agreed to reinforce nationwide lockdown measures after a spike in new cases threatens to overwhelm its healthcare system. • On July 25th, Lebanon recorded 175 new cases, its highest daily number of infections. • To stem a larger outbreak, the government ordered a lockdown from July 30th until August 3rd. • The lockdown will be suspended from August 3 until August 6, with restaurants and cafes allowed to reopen at 50 percent capacity while nightclubs, bars, indoor pools and public parks remain closed. Mexico: • Mexico's Health Ministry has reported 5,480 new confirmed cases of coronavirus infection and 306 deaths, bringing the total in the country to 390,516 cases and 43,680 deaths. • The government said the real number of infected people is likely significantly higher than the confirmed cases. Spain: • The Madrid regional government announced that face masks are now mandatory in all public areas. • The government also announced that the number of persons who can be present at private gatherings is now limited to no more than ten. • Infection rates have been soaring in Spain with more than one thousand new cases reported on a daily basis in Catalonia. • It is feared the regional capital, Barcelona, will become the epicenter of the virus. United Kingdom: • The UK has updated its advice against all non-essential travel to Spain to include the Balearic and Canary Islands following a rise in coronavirus cases. • guidance was changed on Monday to include both mainland Spain and islands such as Ibiza and Tenerife. • Holiday firm Jet2 said it will not be operating flights to Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza, or to mainland Spain, but will be running a schedule of flights back from those destinations on Tuesday. • Holiday operator Tui, said it would cancel all its packages to the Balearic and Canary Islands until 31 July and to mainland Spain until 9 August. • EasyJet, British Airways, and Ryanair said they would continue to operate full schedules of flights to Spain, though EasyJet said its holidays would be cancelled for the next few weeks. • Travellers returning to the UK from anywhere in Spain must now self-isolate for 14 days at a registered address. Vietnam: • Vietnam has locked down Da Nang, its third-largest city, for two weeks after 15 cases of COVID-19 were found in a hospital. • Public transport into and out of the central city of Da Nang was cancelled. Flights have been suspended for 15 days, and train services have also been halted. • The lockdown has dealt a hard blow to the tourism industry, which was just being revived after earlier coronavirus cases mostly subsided at the end of April.
