IBM Z Workload Scheduler 9.5 Setting Alert/Action if an operation does not start or complete Eliana Cerasaro Ph. Copyright © 2019 HCL Products & Platforms | www.hcltech.com
Simplified Workload Handling: Date and time Alert and Action RFE 78332, RFE 78581 • Need a way to define a "Late" time on a job that on its expiration generates alerts • Need to be able to mark a job complete at a certain day and time if the job is not completed • The “Late” attribute must be available for filtered queries EASE MIGRATION FROM OEM Products • We need an easy mapping for same functions available in other Workload Automation products to allow a smooth migration to zWS. IWSz currently has alerting and “suppress if late” features based on the job latest start time that is calculated during the daily plan creation but it cannot be overwritten by a User definition Simplify late job handling 11 | Copyright © 2018 HCL Products & Platforms | www.hcltech.com
WHAT CAN YOU DO? YOU CAN DEFINE IN: ONLY FOR SOME INSTANCES IF WISHED • DATA BASE AT OPERATION LEVEL (VARIABLE VALUES) • CURRENT PLAN User specified ➔ if job not completed Time ➔ if job not started ➔ if job not started YOU CAN ACTIVATE/DEACTIVATE THE FUNCTION: 12 | Copyright © 2018 HCL Products & Platforms | www.hcltech.com

ACTION: o A – Only an alert message is issued. o C – Complete the operation, if its status allows it. Otherwise it is NOPed. o E – Set to Error, if its status allows it. Otherwise it is ignored. o N – Operation and all its internal successors are NOPed, if the status allows it. Otherwise it is ignored. ALERT and ACTION in REST API REST API are affected by infrastructure change (Liberty is the new application server used by DWC and zConnector)). A xml template is used to configure Zconnector, no script anymore. In /usr/servers/dwcServer/configDropins/templates you can find: • connectionFactory.xml to create, manage and delete engine connection 25 | Copyright © 2018 HCL Products & Platforms | www.hcltech.com
ALERT and ACTION in REST API Known limitation about 9.5 installation: To maintain the old “user map” mechanism (that included machine hostname in the user to be mapped), customize the following file (not customized during install): /usr/servers/dwcServer/resources/properties/TWSZOSConnConfig.properties com.ibm.tws.zconn.usr.mapping.enable=true com.ibm.tws.zconn.usr.mapping.file=mapping_file_path\mapping_file For details: https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SSRULV_9.5.0/com.ibm.tivoli.itws.doc_9.5/zos/ src_inst/eqqi1consid.htm 26 | Copyright © 2018 HCL Products & Platforms | www.hcltech.com
IBM Z Workload Scheduler 9.5 Optimizing the workload through a smooth submission Eliana Cerasaro Ph. Copyright © 2019 HCL Products & Platforms | www.hcltech.com
Workload Optimization (avoid peaks) RFE 84048 - Start as late as possible for not critical jobs • Customers would like to have the possibility to allow non-critical jobs (which are not defined on the critical path) to be delayed from starting at the beginning of the batch window, either through an absolute value (user defined) or automatically evaluated via WLM (depending on the load of the system at the time) Currently IWSz submits as soon as possible all jobs in the workload: This can lead to SYSTEM overload, unnecessary CPU peeks and job interlock. ... … Customers got BATCH-delay due to much parallel BATCH. Smoothing the submission 28 | Copyright © 2018 HCL Products & Platforms | www.hcltech.com
Smoothing the submission YOU CAN ... ADD A PLANNED DELAY TO ALL NOT CRITICAL JOBS DP Batch BATCHOPTS Controller adds a random delay of x seconds • SMOOTHSUBDELAY(nnnnn) (0➔10000) (range 1 to nnnnn) to not critical, urgent, or noped jobs (cannot be run before the generated • SMOOTHSUBCONFLEVEL(n) (0➔5) new IA) The added delay never overcome: • the job latest latest out Adjusted Variance • If smoothsubconflevel(N) is specified, the Latest Out Latest Out latest out less a «cushion» of N times the latest out variance. Prioritizing Critical jobs What happens if I do PRIORITIZE CRITICAL JOBS not want add a delay (handled like urgent ones) but ... I activate the function on Controller side? IBM Z Workload Scheduler 9.5 Integrating with IBM CDP (centralizing log for analytics) Eliana Cerasaro Ph. Copyright © 2019 HCL Products & Platforms | www.hcltech.com
Centralized Log/Messages: Common Data Provider • AUDIT FUNCTION HAS REPORTS IN SOME PARTS NOT SO EASY TO BE ANALYZED • INTERFACE IS “OLD ISPF PANEL” STYLE • MESSAGES IN MLOG ARE SEPARATED FROM AUDIT INFO • MODERN ANALYTIC TOOLS CANNOT ACCESS zWS AUDIT INFO AS “BIG DATA” CDP Integration 36 | Copyright © 2018 HCL Products & Platforms | www.hcltech.com
WHAT IS CDP ? capturing z/OS performance and operational data for use by Analytics products. Analytics Tools ZWS user scenarios: • Easier access to ZWS AUDIT data Possible Can send extracted data to • ZWS error messages integrated with System Messages for any target that can receive it INPUT: problem analysis over an IP port. 37 | Copyright © 2018 HCL Products & Platforms | www.hcltech.com
ZWS 950 INTEGRATION Controller writes a text message in the CDPz Unix files each time an “interesting” JT or DB Controller JT event or message is issued … INPUT: Unix files CDPz MLOGs Unix files JTx DB JTx CDPz LOG forwarder and Data streamer are involved … 38 | Copyright © 2018 HCL Products & Platforms | www.hcltech.com
FUNCTION VALUE NO! 1) Population of Unix files is independent from CDP If I do not have 2) Unix Files can be easily accessed and used by your CDP this function is programs/tools. HOW TO SET IT UP What I have to do Create a Unix directory where to store the log (EQQJOBS) in order to use this new function? Add new parameter to enable the function on Controller Path Max length = 40 chars Customize CDP to set defined Unix files as INPUT CDP(YES) Note: Modify command available to activate or deactivate (CDP=ON/OFF) the CDP logging after ZWS start 40 | Copyright © 2018 HCL Products & Platforms | www.hcltech.com
CUSTOMIZING OPCOPTS CDPDB(YES|NO) Set NO to avoid logging of events related to actions performed in the controller database. CDPJOBSTATUS(CS|changed operation statuses|NO) Indicates the changed statuses of an operation that are to be logged. Specify the string including all status changes you want to log. E.g. CEAR* for complete, error and ready. Valid values are: A,C, E, I, R, S, X, *. By default, only the statuses changed to C and S are logged. CDPMCP(YES|NO) Set NO to avoid logging of events related to MCP actions. 41 | Copyright © 2018 HCL Products & Platforms | www.hcltech.com
CUSTOMIZING CDPSWITCHLOGLIM(number of records|1000) Specifies how many records must be written in the CDP log before the CDP log switching function is started. The default messages tracked for CDP are in the following categories: ➢ Automatic recovery information ➢ Application ended in error ➢ Job late (old and new criteria) Can I the add my SURE! ➢ Waiting for special resources favourite ZWS ➢ Failing of MCP update messages to CDP logging? It is enough to add CDP=YES into the message (as WTO=YES option handling) User defined ALERT/ACTION if an operation does not start or complete 42 | Copyright © 2018 HCL Products & Platforms | www.hcltech.com

If you are specifying STATUS(C) to set the operation status to Complete, you can optionally specify a return code for the completed operation. It can be any 4 characters. It can be used in conditional dependencies. ➢ Cross Dependencies AUTOMATIC REBIND Cross Dependencies - Automatic re-bind when bind information (remote job info or workstation ) are modified in the current plan. A manual BND command was needed before. ➢ JTOPTS supports NOPWAIT(YES/NO) JTOPTS initialization statement now supports the parameter NOPWAIT(YES | NO). Specify YES if an operation that you are NOPing will be actually NOPed after that time dependencies and special resources, if any, are resolved. The default is NO, meaning that the operation is NOPed immediately, as it was before RFE. ➢ Batch Loader preserves duration value If you are replacing an application and the duration parameter (ADOPOLDDUR) is not specified in the ADOP statement, the EQQYLTOP batch program does not override the original duration otherwise if set to N, duration is overwritten by the new values. ➢ EQQZAIDX redesign to reduce CPU Ther csect EQQZAIDX is used to provide date and time for variables and related operations calculations. It has been re-written in a more efficient and moderna way to save CPU. ➢ Rebuild SSX saving events queue BUILDSSX(REBUILD) is used during migration. But if it is left by error, at every tracker restart the tracker records in ECSA are lost. When new and old FMID is the same the event 45 | queue is mantained.
