PRAGUE June 16-20, 2015 The City of a Thousand Spires has seen it all. Centuries of Bohemian kings, classical composers, invading Nazis, Soviet tanks and Velvet Revolutionaries have passed over Prague’s cobblestones, and the spires survived it all, creating one of Europe’s most romantic and beautiful skylines. Stroll the Charles Bridge at dusk or row a boat down the Vltava River to discover what makes this Baroque jewel so alluring. Baroque churches, a royal palace, flagstone courtyards and bejeweled reliquaries comprise Prague Castle, a complex of buildings perched regally on a hilltop above Prague. Get lost in a labyrinth of picturesque, medieval, cobbled streets in the Old City, or peruse the memorable storefronts full of glittering pieces surrounding the Old Town Square. Whether you are a seasoned music aficionado or a casual listener, you are certain to find a music event or ten to suit your tastes. Hearing a work of music in Prague, be it a favorite opera in the same theatre where it premiered, an experimental jazz piece at one of Prague’s new jazz clubs, or a band of street musicians on the Charles Bridge, the music is as much a part of the experience as the city itself. BERLIN June 20-24, 2015 Ask Berliners what they love about the German capital and some will talk about the joys of post-Communist freedom, others about Kreuzberg’s throbbing nightlife, others about Friedrichshain’s exciting young designers. Berlin can fill you with wonder, contemplating the future in the crystalline Reichstag and high-rise Potsdamer Platz, and with emotion, revisiting the past at the Jewish Museum and remnants of the Berlin Wall. The nostalgic, the party lover, the trendsetter, today’s Berlin is one city, many characters - different every time you look but never looked at indifferently. Eight times the size of Paris, Berlin does not lack for things to do. This reunited city’s treasures include Norman Foster’s panoramic glass-domed Reichstag (German Parliament), the historic Brandenburg Gate and UNESCO-listed Museum Island’s galleries, where Egypt’s Queen Nefertiti hides. Trace Berlin’s turbulent past at the Libeskind-designed Jewish Museum and walk the artiest stretch of Wall at the East Side Gallery. The fall of the Wall was the party of the 20th century, and even today Berlin still hasn’t run out of steam. Glitzy 1920s cabaret lives on along Friedrichstrasse, while classical music rings out of Mitte’s lavish concert halls like the neoclassical Staatsoper. Canal-side bars draw revelers to Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain. Summer evenings are best spent chatting and sipping foamy wheat beer under chestnut trees in Prenzlauer Berg’s Prater Garten beer garden. Berlin | June 20-24, 2015 | Page 7
