President’s Corner Welcome to the July issue of our Hornby Club newsletter. It’s hard to believe that it is already halfway through the year! Time may be flying, but it is full steam ahead on the Club’s redevelopment with an estimated opening of our Pavilion area by end of September. This is a much-anticipated moment, and a lot of time and effort is being dedicated by our contactors, consultants and Club staff. We all want this to be an incredible space that ensures the viable future of the Club and we are optimistic and ready for this next chapter. Thank you to everyone who has made the effort to visit the Club during the cold and wet June. We appreciate all your support! Wishing you all a fantastic July. Kevin Cole President of HWMC
AGM and Board Elections Dear Members As you will be aware, the Covid-19 virus and subsequent restrictions on people’s movements affected the way the Club was able to operate from late March until mid-May 2020. Traditionally the process to hold the Elections and AGM, as laid out in the Club’s rule book, would have begun in mid-May this year. However, due to the Covid-19 restrictions it was not possible to do this. In May, Government passed the Covid-19 Response (Requirements For Entities-Modifications and Exemptions Act 2020). Section 13 of this Act allows the Board of the Club, believing on reasonable grounds, that it cannot comply with its rules relating to the holding of its AGM and the term length of Officers and Board Members of the Club, to postpone the date of these until no later than 30 November 2020. At a special Board meeting, held on Monday 8 June 2020, the Board passed a Notice of Modification allowing for a change of date to the AGM and term length of Officers and Board Members as reflected in the Act. The date set for the AGM is now Sunday 22 November 2020 and Election Day will be Saturday 28 November 2020. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Yours sincerely Paul Inwood General Manager

Here are the dates: • 17 July: Jo’s Karaoke 7pm Main Bar • 24 July: Reminisce 7pm Main Bar • 21 August: Jo’s Karaoke 7pm Main Bar • 28 August: Ian Mac 7pm Main Bar
SECTION NEWS INDOOR BOWLS The indoor bowls section will be recommencing playing bowls on Monday 6 July at 7.30pm. Our playing venue will be The Avonhead Primary School (55 Avonhead Road), as we are unable to use the sports hall from end of June. We will be playing social bowls every second week and will arrange visits to other Clubs over the remainder of this season. Emails will be sent to all members advising the above details. Any Club members that are not members of our section and would like to come along and participate are welcome and can contact our Chairman, Justin Thompson. Regards David Philpott
OUTDOOR BOWLS Outdoor Bowls has been lucky to play one of our two scheduled games since the return to level 1 and some sort of normality. A small number played in the May match but unfortunately the June match had to be cancelled due to the weather. Winners of the May tournament were the John Bowley team with Les Jarvis, Robert Palmer and Susan Low showing us that local knowledge and skill are important in winning games of bowls. Our AGM will be held in the Main Bar of the Club on Sunday 12 July at 10.30am, we look forward to seeing our members attend so we can continue to grow the Section and keep it strong. Stay Safe Robin Leary (Chairperson)
DARTS It’s been a trying time for everyone since we stopped playing darts in late March, but there have been many players in lockdown practising so the standard will be high on our return. Some of our team have been playing online, with their phones set up to play, with video, against another lockdown opponent from around NZ. We are now back up and running and started playing on Wednesday 24 June in the downstairs room with just four dart boards at our disposal until the new bar is up and running. The Cashmere Club have offered us two boards to use as our alternate “home game” boards which we are grateful for. We have six teams competing in three different grades and four of these teams play each other at Hornby this week! Our new look shirts will be on display and will look super smart having already won the best dressed Club at the recent South Island tournament held in early March 2020. Our new committee have been busy packing away the gear from upstairs before the makeover. We are trialling our new lotto fundraising this year with tickets sold for the bonus number on a Wednesday night which our players will be offering for sale before playing. Onwards and upwards from here on until end of October for the Winter round even though it is an ask to go out in the cold at night after three months off! Noeline
CARDS - EUCHRE Hello, welcome to all members. Hope you all managed to get through the past few months safely. It is great to finally be able to resume some normality back in our Club and our section. We started our first Thursday night Euchre night on 18 June. We had 28 players, which was awesome to see, especially as it was the first night and a cold day. We are starting our Thursday nights at an earlier time of 7pm from now on, playing our usual 12 games, which allows us to finish just prior to 9.30pm. On Saturday we got to play our first game of Saturday Interclub Cards against New Brighton at home. We are just playing the 2nd round this year (with the first round cancelled), with our team consisting of 9 Euchre pairs and 4 Crib pairs. We had a good win against them, beating them 11-2. We will see how we go for the next six weeks. Our section AGM will be on Thursday 9 July at 7pm with supper provided and chance to have some friendly games afterwards. We will have election of office positions and committee. We welcome any members to step forward and be part of our committee in this new era. Our section will be playing all games in the future downstairs from 1 July, due to the next stage of Club redevelopment taking place upstairs. We will make it work, but just need our members to accept the change and would appreciate help at the end of night to put away. Lotto will also be starting shortly. We appreciate all our regular loyal club members that purchase every week. This is an essential part of our fundraising to help provide some of our fun activities during the year.
As always, we welcome anyone who wishes to join our section. Come along on a Thursday night and check us out. Remember we start at 7pm. So, until next month. Regards Lorraine Cole
TRAVEL Hello everybody Well things are very close to normal now and with the shortest day now passed, psychologically we can feel like things are on the up, even though we have some rough weather to come. I am happy to advise we have a mid-winter dinner now planned for the 18 July. We have over 40 members listed to attend this dinner which will depart from the Hornby Club at 5pm on Saturday 18. For those of you on our reserve list I am working through these names as others on the list pull out. If your name comes up, I will call you and advise. It will be great to at last have something planned. Our first meeting since the lock down will be on Monday 20 July at 7pm in the TAB room at the Club. Warm regards Lyn Wright
FISHING Well what do we say about fishing in lockdown? Actually, not a lot. I think most of us just hunkered down, accepted it, and dreamed of fish that were happy swimming around growing fatter and thus easier for us to catch once we were unshackled. A couple of brave (or mad) members went down to Lake Benmore and tried the canals and Ohau, but with conditions below freezing and the fish still mostly in hibernation, not a lot of success was had. We will be meeting together for our Mid-Winter Christmas function on 11 July at the Racecourse Hotel and will be eager to swap stories of our times in isolation. Our first meeting post lockdown will be held at the Club on Wednesday 1 July at 7 pm. Looking forward to seeing our members and any newbies that are interested in joining the fishing section. Tight lines, Jenny Street
POOL The Pool Section AGM is being held on Monday 6 July at 6pm. This is open to all section members so please come along to have your input. Now that we are in level 1, our interclub season is about to start on the Tuesday 7 (Prems & Div 1) and Wednesday 8 July (Div 2 & 3). We will only be playing one round this year because of the lockdown, and there will be no promotion / delegation with teams this year. At this stage, Finals Day is planned for Woolston. Canterbury 8 Ball have also looked at the 2020 tournament calendar and have managed to rejig some of the dates around for the majority of these tournaments to try to fit as many in as they can, so please keep an eye out on the Hornby Facebook Page for the latest news / updates on these. There is also a hard copy on the pool section notice board. The rebuilding of the Club looks like it is coming along nicely with a reopening date, I believe, late September so we are all looking forward to seeing the new pool area. Cheers The Hornby Pool Section
SNOOKER The Snooker section are conducting their Handicap Drawn Pairs with a very even Field of 12 players. We are at the Semi-final stage, so the results will be in our next issue. In three weeks’ time, the section has three teams entered in interclub Snooker. The room at Holt Place is open seven days a week from 10am till 10pm and the cost of a visit is only $2. Cheap as. The progress of the new part of the Club is going well. I was at the Club the other day and had a meal. Very good for the price. Give it a go. We seem to be on top of Covid-19 with only a few cases appearing and they are from overseas arrivals. We must not drop our guard. If unwell, stay home and keep warm. Good luck to all Sub sections on their return to the Club when they resume action. The raffles are back in action most nights toward the end of the week. Your support is required. Have a great month, until next time. Finally, if you are a new member join a Section and have fun and meet some top people. Cheers Pot Black
GOLF Hello all, Hope you are all well, with a strong chance the dreadful virus is all over we will have a spring back in the step. Good to see the Club back in action, your support will be appreciated. The Golf Section had their first game a couple of weeks ago. The Venue was Rangiora Golf Course. Thirty of us arrived to a severe frost and a delayed start time, but the sun was out. A few of the guys were sporting beards with most having a touch of grey. In the men’s section Pete Middlemiss and Andrew (raro) Ataera had Nett 74s. Hot on their heels, were Steve Lambert, Pete Halliwell and John Poole with Nett 75s. In the ladies’ grade, Susan Low was first, closely followed by Glenda-Kingi- Hazel, well done Susan. There was only one 2 and that was Glenda and that was on the first hole she played. The next game is at McLean’s Island on 19 July, 9.30am start. We are offering a two for one deal. The Ian Watson Drawn Pairs and the 1st round of the Club Champs. This a game that was postponed due to Covid-19. Keep warm and good golfing, The Big Fella.
Hornby Club Book Club This month’s Hornby Club Book Club is international bestseller and now major motion picture, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. It’s another five-star read. Here is the summary: It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still. By her brother’s graveside, Liesel’s life is changed when she picks up a single object, partially hidden in the snow. It is The Gravedigger’s Handbook, left there by accident, and it is her first act of book thievery. So begins a love affair with books and words, as Liesel, with the help of her accordion-playing foster father, learns to read. Soon she is stealing books from Nazi book-burnings, the mayor’s wife’s library, wherever there are books to be found. But these are dangerous times. When Liesel’s foster family hides a Jewish fist-fighter in their basement, Liesel’s world is both opened up, and closed down. The Book Thief is a story about the power of words to make worlds. In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time.
