Marvellous Musicals Our tribute to the art of musicals continues in this programme with two classics; You Were Never Lovelier on Thursday 25th Jan and Moulin Rouge on Friday 9th February. You Were Never Lovelier starring Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth was made in 1942: another era not unlike this one when people wanted to forget what was going on around them. Fans of Strictly will be pleased to see some latin numbers in this film, Astaire explores Rumba and Samba, and then livens things up even more with some Swing and Jive numbers as well. This may not be one of the best known musicals but it promises to deliver all that a person could want from the genre. Baz Lurhman’s Moulin Rouge is like taking a bottle of champagne that has been shaken up – it fizzes all over the place! It’s the most exhilarating party ever, breathtakingly baroque this larger than life movie will have you booking a weekend in Paris the moment you leave the cinema!
Welcome to our Winter Programme No6 is delighted to encourage young talent wherever and whenever we can. In the last programme we screened a number of short films before our main features from the Random Acts Collection: shorts made by young artists and film-makers, with the backing and support of Channel 4, BFI and The Arts Council. This programme we will be screening some short films made by filmmaker, James Cummings a recent graduate of Portsmouth Uni. He has made us some delightful ‘Code of Conduct’ shorts which we will be screening before some of our films. We know that the No.6 audience needs no reminders to turn off their phones or not to scrunch sweet wrappers etc... but hey, the odd wayward person sometimes comes along! We also welcome contributions to our ‘News’ blog on the website. Any young writers wishing to hone their writing skills a piece (film themed obviously, no longer than 500 words and accompanied by a picture) let us have it and we will endeavour to publish it. Sat 3 Feb at 19:00 Looking forward to our next programme we will be featuring the work of a talented printmaker who goes under the nom de plume ‘Petting Zoo’. This small taster of his work will whet your appetite for the main event which will be featured on our new style March/April programme.
