March 2021 Volume 8, Issue 5 MODESTO HIGH SCHOOL College & Scholarship Bulletin FAFSA and Dream Act Financial Aid Applications Due March 2 Now that you have submitted your FAFSA or Dream Act application, be checking your email or US postal mail for instructions to set up your Student Web Grant Account. This is how you will find out how much aid you are eligible to receive. Remember that our school district automatically submitted your GPA verification form electronically for you this year an dwill do so again next year. There are 2 things students need to complete on the Web Grants Portal. 1) Identify the college that you will be attending. Do this ASAP. If you aren’t sure at this point, identifythe college you will MOST LIKELY be attending. You can log on and change this later if needed. If you are getting a message on your Web Grant account that your GPA could not be verified, it is probably due to inconsistencies in your name or other contact information. In May, students will need to log on again to verify that they will be graduating. Contact Ms. Garibay for help. Each university you applied to should be providing you with a financial aid award package this month. It may be in your portal or emailed to you. This will give specific details of ALL aid available to you from each university. Be sure to ACCEPT the award package in the university student portal ONLY for the college that you choose to attend! This message is posted almost every month. It is crucial that you use your legal name on all school, college, and financial aid documents. Your legal name is what is printed on your birth certificate and or social security card. As you transition from high school to college and the real world, you must use your legal name consistently in everything you do. This is especially important for students who have 2 last names, or go by middle names. If you have not been using your legal name at school or on any applications, you need to get that fixed immediately! College & Scholarship Bulletin 3

ELIGIBILITY IN THE LOCAL CONTEXT (ELC) The highest achieving 15% of the junior class will be receiving letters requesting parent permission for participation in the UC ELC program. These students have been identified based on their successful comple- tion of A-G coursework and GPA. After spring semester grades have posted, the top 9% will be selected by UC for ELC status. What does this mean? Based on your past academic performance, and your GPA at the end of this semester, you may be guaranteed ad- mission at a UC campus. UC does not guarantee which campus, it may or not be a UC that you apply to as a senior. What do juniors need to do? If you would like our school district to submit your transcript to UC, your parent/guardian needs to sign the permission slip and submitit to Ms. Garibay by the due date listed on the ELC letter. Make sure that you apply to at least one UC cam- pus in the fall of your senior year. You will receive the letter as soon as it is available (mid-March). Please be patient What about seniors who were on this list last year? As you begin to receive UC acceptances and denials, you may receive an ac- ceptance from a UC campus that you did not apply to. This ac- ceptance is based on your participation in the ELC program. https://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/admission- requirements/freshman-requirements/california-residents/local- guarantee-elc.html College & Scholarship Bulletin 5
CSU & UC SYSTEMS ON SAT NEWS CSU's have just said that they will be TEST-OPTIONAL for the Class of 2022. So if you don't take the SAT/ACT you will not be penalized. They only will be looking at your grades and rigor of your coursework. This last semester of junior year is very im- portant to earn good grades to positively impact your GPA. Make sure you go to sum- mer school if you need to make up a D or F in a required course. Article: CSU System News UC's will be TEST BLIND until the fall of 2024, which means they will not consider an SAT/ACT score at all. They will be evaluating you on your grades, rigor of coursework, extracurricular activities/community service, and your personal insight questions. If you are planning on majoring in computer science, engineering or biology they will ac- cept the SAT subject tests (Math Level 2 plus a science). I would only take these if you consider yourself a good test taker and plan to major in those areas at a UC, otherwise skip it. Article: UC Board of Regents So to test or not to test...If you plan to apply to Cal Poly, SDSU, San Jose State in Engi- neering, Biology or Computer Science and are a good test taker (a good score would be an ACT in the 30's or SAT in the high 1400's) then you may consider taking the test. You can always take it to see how you do and not send scores until after you see them. How will this news impact other schools? Since California has the largest public uni- versity system in the nation, this is going to have profound effects on other universi- ties. I expect the majority of colleges in the nation will be test optional next year, espe- cially with our Covid rates where they are. You will need to check individual college websites if you are planning to apply to private schools or out of state public schools. If you do decide to sign up for testing the website for SAT is www.sat.org/ready and you could sign up for a March, May or June test date. For ACT you go to www.actstudent.org to sign up and they have a April, June or July test date. Colleg- es will accept either test. If you receive free/reduced lunch you would qualify for a fee waiver to take these for free. Just email me for a code. College & Scholarship Bulletin
www.collegeboard.org www.actstudent.org Juniors if you decide to take the SAT or ACT you should be registering for the SAT and/or ACT (both with writing) this spring. If the college you are applying to requires it; I recommend that you take it once in the spring of your junior year, and again in the fall of your senior year. You can take them both, since the tests are different and you may find that you do better on one test. Go to the websites listed above, create a username & password that you will re- member, as you will need to log in to these websites again! ACT Test Date: April 17 June 12 Register By: March 12 May 7 SAT Test Date: March 13 May 8 June 5 Register By: February 12 April 8 May 6 Students on free or reduced lunch are eligible for a total of 2 SAT fee waivers and 2 ACT fee waivers. It’s a good idea to use one the spring of your junior year and one in the fall of your senior year. Fee waivers are available via Ms. Garibay. You’ll have to upload a photo of yourself for the admission ticket. Don’t forget to print your ad- mission ticket and take a photo I.D. to the test! Make sure that you use your legal first and last name, exactly as it is on your birth certificate. Although you may not be sure where you will apply to college yet, request that your scores be sent anyway. It’s free to send scores when you test, but they will charge you later. If you end up taking the test again and getting a better score, the lower score will be ignored. For SAT and ACT, send scores to one CSU and your score will be shared with ALL of the CSUs. Send scores to one UC and it will be shared with all UCs.
