MIDDLE SCHOOL news RESURRECTION gardens This term, the Middle School students have been unpacking the idea of salvation and following the journey of mankind from The Fall to Noah, discussing the need for a saviour – a timely focus leading into Easter. Mrs. Dawson’s class enjoyed creating Resurrection Gardens in reflection of the Easter story. Many thoughtful questions arose from this activity and led to in-depth discussion as students developed their understanding of the details that entailed Christ’s journey to the cross, His burial and resurrection. Archie – Mrs Dawson’s dog – was warmly welcomed visitor and enjoyed sitting beside the students during their creations. Middle school SCIENCE The more we learn about how our Creator has designed all things, the more we grow in appreciation. This term, the Year 9s learnt some secrets behind magic by understanding how light waves act and can be manipulated. We can only see that which light reveals - this is also true within our relationship with Christ. The more of Him (light) we allow into our lives, the clearer His purpose is for us. We looked at how rainbows are formed within nature, why objects appear with colour and the effects of coloured filters. We learnt to appreciate light’s ability to travel in optic fibre cables - delivering information to us with the click of a button. In Sound, we investigated and discussed how sound is produced, amplified, and how the pitch gets manipulated on various musical instruments. Students are currently working on designing an interactive sound poster with detailed explanations of how various notes are produced by their chosen instrument. They also know that the more energy they put into playing an instrument, the louder the sound will be - showing us yet again: the things we invest more energy in in life, will deliver a more significant impact with longer-lasting effects. 6 The News 2021 Term 1 - Issue 2
MIDDLE SCHOOL news At the beginning of Term One, all the Middle school CREATE students designed a personalised design: an “ABOUT ME” Hoodie that provided an insight into who they are, what they enjoy doing and what they are known for. The process of the design and creation of this piece was a perfect opportunity for us to discuss the HCS VIP for the term – “Identity” - highlighting where we draw our identity from; what the world says about us or what God says about us. Considering the unique things that make us all different in the process of making us think about what do we want to be known for? Each CREATE group then moved into their specific artwork tasks for the term; Year 7s looked at mosaics, Year 8s colour and shading, Year 9s at elements and principles of design – line, form and shape. It’s been a busy and creative term one, and we look forward to seeing more beautiful artworks in Term Two. Term 1 - Issue 2 The News 2021 7
SECONDARY SCHOOL news WAIKATO road trip The Year 10s left HCS to travel to places of significance in 1863 during the Waikato land wars. From school to Tūrangawaewae, to The Point in Ngāruawahia was stage one, followed by Rangiriri and the main battle site. Te Wheoro’s redoubt, the cemetery and the Pā site were visited as maps were checked for location and an app recount from Heritage Trails was listened to. From here we continued north, paced the Meremere site, stopping in Mercer. Here we visited the Whare Tāonga, looking at relics from the steamship days while having lunch and listening to information from the interesting curators. Our last official stop was the Queen’s redoubt where General Cameron stationed his troops. Then we crossed the road for a well-earned Pokeno ice cream. The trip home was quieter as we all reflected on the rich history of our back yard. Everyone had a long, sunny, fun and of course, educational day. Thanks to the extra parents who came along to help us out. 8 The News 2021 Term 1 - Issue 2
SECONDARY SCHOOL news YEAR 11 SURF AWARENESS The sun was shining in Raglan on 17 March, the surf was inviting and the tide was high….. What an awesome environment to do our Y11 surf awareness trip for 2021! The students learnt about rips, safe swimming into the surf and back onto the beach as well as essential life skill tips on staying safe for themselves and others. They were privileged to have access to the Raglan Surf lifesaving club and some volunteer lifeguards (Mr G and our very own Maddie Wills from HCS) to help us out. Some beach safety tips, a tour of the club rooms, water and beach activities, followed by hot chips and rescue stories completed our day. Thank you to our lifeguard helpers, Mrs McIntosh (parent helper) Mr Foster and Mrs Withers for a great day out! Term 1 - Issue 2 The News 2021 9
SECONDARY SCHOOL news LEVEL 2 NCEA PE HIKE Wairere falls On March 19th, the Level 2 PE class ventured up the Wairere Falls bush track as part of their PE assessment. The students chose and analysed safety strategies to implement on the hike, which they then evaluated back at school. The weather was great - sunny, but not too hot. The view was clear and we could see for miles up the top! Thank you to Mrs Jeffery (parent helper) and Mrs Withers for this trip! Well our swimming sports may have been cancelled this year, but we were given an opportunity to have our own wet weather fun recently with the massive downpour at school. Skim boarding and sliding in the massive puddle was a great way to finish of the PE session for those adventurous students who were pining to be outside :) With the water just deep enough to feel like a mini pool, it was a good way to cool off from the indoor activities too. 10 The News 2021 Term 1 - Issue 2
SECONDARY SCHOOL news HOWICK historic village The Year 10s travelled to the Howick Historic Village to learn about life in New Zealand during the 1850- 1880 time of the Fencibles in Howick. Workshops on butter making, a court case from the petty court, a school lesson and outdoor games were held before we raced around the village to see the wonderful restored buildings set out as a full village. When we see our homes today we realise how challenging it was to establish the new colony and are thankful to those that were here before us. YOUNG ENTERPRISE kickstarter campaign The Year 12 and 13 business studies students participated in the Young Enterprise Kickstarter campaign in February to start off their businesses. The students were able to talk to business mentors and get feedback to inform them of the next steps for their businesses. Students will compete for cash prizes and scholarships throughout the year. We wish them all the best! Term 1 - Issue 2 The News 2021 11
DISCOVERY MISSION TEAMS We had a fantastic first trip for 2021 to Hilda Ross to run a chapel service for a group of elderly residents. Bianca sang, “Conversation with the Moon,“ by Keeley, Thomas gave a devotion on grace, Jemma prayed, Freddy delivered a poem, Brynn played the piano and the whole team sang. “Amazing Grace”, “Bless the Lord” and then some favourites from Hilda Ross’s songbook. Following the service, we all mingled and chatted with the folk there. This was an uplifting and joyful adventure to serve our community. trip to HILDA ROSS 12 The News 2021 Term 1 - Issue 2

Whānau SCHOOL WIDE events Life is so much more colourful when you have people to experience it with. After all, it’s those unplanned, unpredictable, hilarious moments that amount to the best memories. That’s why it’s important to take the time to celebrate the valuable relationships by getting to know oneanother and spending quality time togheter. This connection was evident with the fantastic turnout at the Whānau Picnic and Info night on 17 March, where we strengthened the bonds within the HCS community. Developing a strong and united community allows students to feel secure and safe, which in turn enhances their overall well-being. May we continue to work together to strive with a relentless passion for maintaining and strengthening this sense of community, care and support that we so appreciate at HCS. It’s not what we have in life, but who we have in our life that matters. Thank you for partnering with us in your child’s learning journey. Two are better than one...for if they fall, one will lift up the other. - Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 Term 1 - Issue 2 The News 2021 17

Derek Tieku Coaching Clinic sessions available to students here at Hamilton Christian School. 2 years ago the girls’ football program had the privilege of a few coaching sessions with DT Coaching Clinic which is a Football Academy owned and operated by Derek Tieku. Who is Derek Tieku ?I hear some ask, well, here is short blurb about him and what he offers. Derek previously played for Fulham FC, having earned a scholarship for 2 years through the youth system. During his final year at Fulham, he was loaned out to Crystal Palace FC, where he signed a professional contract. After playing for many years as a professional Derek moved to New Zealand playing in the ISPS Handa and coaching for 4 years. During this time he was named the MVP for the ISPS Handa Premiership 2019/2020 season. He has a Football Association Level 2 coaching certificate and is currently working towards UEFA B level. He is a passionate coach and still loves playing football with the Wanderers. His goal is to train with a purpose and develop the whole player by extending and challenging them to be the best version of themselves. His sessions focus on the idea that drills, or skills practiced has a purpose and that is to bet- ter the players core football ability. The key focus during his sessions are enhancing the players core football skills by working through technical sessions on speed, dribbling, first touches, footwork, agility, and game knowledge. You can view DT Coaching Clinic on facebook following this URL for more information on https://www.facebook. com/DTCoachingClinic The DT Coaching Clinic sessions are being made available to students here at Hamilton Christian School. How will this work? During Term 2 DT Coaching Clinic will do a lunchtime (12:05pm – 1pm) session on Wednesday with any student that would like to be involved the cost is $100.00 per term. These sessions are limited to 18 students. Derek has also offered to do a holiday camp on Wednesday 21 April from 9am – 11am and 11am – 1pm. These sessions are limited to 12 places and each 2 hour intensive session will cost $55.00. These sessions are limited in number so players will get a more tailored approach to develop their individual skills. This is a great opportunity for all football players who are wanting to develop their core skills with a coach of Der- ek’s experience. The sports team is excited to see DT Coaching Clinic involved with our students. If you are interested in your son or daughter being involved in this great sporting opportunity then please contact Derek directly on tiekusderek@hotmail.com. 18 The News 2021 Term 1 - Issue 2
