Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School Est. 1912 Our Lady of Guadalupe is a Catholic School Community dedicated to instilling Catholic character, to strengthening academic excellence, and to empowering the students to serve others, confident in the love, protection, and guidance of God, through the intercession of Mary, our Mother Volume 2 Issue 13 June 5, 2020 From the Principal's Desk Dear Our Lady of Guadalupe Families, What a beautiful day! I hope everyone is enjoying their first week of summer! Now that the school year has ended, I know there are already many questions about the beginning of school this Fall. We are all praying that the Fall sees us once again in our classrooms with our students. However, we are also actively planning for the possibility of a hybrid model of instruction for the upcoming school year. Meetings are currently being held at the Office for Catholic Schools to develop a set of plans for the various possibilities for the beginning of school. I will share the official plan as soon as possible. Please know that whatever the Office of Catholic Schools directs, the safety of our students, families, teachers and staff will always be the deciding factor. Thank you to all parents who have responded to our Google Forms survey in regards to re-opening the school this fall. This is a complicated process- we are looking at guidelines from all levels, including the Archdiocese, and making the best decision we can with the information we have. Please know that student/staff safety is always our top concern, as is providing a high-quality education. There are many concerns being voiced by you, and we are doing our due diligence to determine the best-case scenario for re-opening. Some responses have ranged from “why are we even considering not being in the classroom?” to “I plan to keep my child home and would like a virtual option to lead their schoolwork”. There are many questions about the health measures we plan to take (taking temperatures, sanitation, monitoring of
sick students). We also acknowledge the trials we faced in the emergency switch to distance learning, and are already planning Professional Development in many areas of technology. If you have not yet taken the survey, we encourage you to do so by following this link: OLGCS Parent Questionnaire (or en Espanol). We plan to share the results of the survey as well as more reopening details before the end of the month. Thank you, thank you, thank you! To every person who has been a part of our school, has been a supporter of our school, and has been there to cheer us on. We are so thankful for each of you. We can be very proud of our school this year. We have had an incredible year through and through. Our staff, students, friends, supporters, and school families have pulled together even in this time of great challenge, working harder than ever to be the best that we can. Your work, your time, your energies, and your prayers are appreciated. You are keeping the “Spirit” of our beautiful Catholic School alive and available to more and more families. We are touching the hearts and souls in ways that are special and in ways that can only be done as we practice our faith that is infused within the core of our Catholic school mission. I am sure that God is smiling at us! May you and your family remain in good health and in positive spirits as we face these uncharted challenges together. You will remain in our thoughts and prayers as we enter the summer break. I hope that you all find time to rest and revitalize, and we are overjoyed about being able to see you all again very soon. As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns. Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us. Sincerely in Christ, Irazema S. Ortiz Principal Summer Hours Monday – Thursdays 8:30 am – 4:00 pm Closed June 29 -July 3rd Pope Francis' Prayer for Peace Lord God of peace, hear our prayer!
We have tried so many times and over so many years to resolve our conflicts by our own powers and by the force of our arms. How many moments of hostility and darkness have we experienced; how much blood has been shed; how many lives have been shattered; how many hopes have been buried… But our efforts have been in vain. Now, Lord, come to our aid! Grant us peace, teach us peace; guide our steps in the way of peace. Open our eyes and our hearts, and give us the courage to say: "Never again war!"; "With war everything is lost". Instill in our hearts the courage to take concrete steps to achieve peace. Lord, God of Abraham, God of the Prophets, God of Love, you created us and you call us to live as brothers and sisters. Give us the strength daily to be instruments of peace; enable us to see everyone who crosses our path as our brother or sister. Make us sensitive to the plea of our citizens who entreat us to turn our weapons of war into implements of peace, our trepidation into confident trust, and our quarreling into forgiveness. Keep alive within us the flame of hope, so that with patience and perseverance we may opt for dialogue and reconciliation. In this way may peace triumph at last, and may the words "division", "hatred" and "war" be banished from the heart of every man and woman. Lord, defuse the violence of our tongues and our hands. Renew our hearts and minds, so that the word which always brings us together will be "brother", and our way of life will always be that of: Shalom, Peace, Salaam! Amen. May Recap Teacher Appreciation Car Parade, May 8 At the request of some of our awesome parents, the school organized a Car Parade to end Teacher Appreciation Week. Each and every teacher & staff member was in attendance to witness the love and support from our families. The parade lasted almost 40 minutes as car after car drove through the parking lot and plaza to wave and say hi. It was such a treat for the teachers to be able to see their students again, many for the first time since mid-March. Click here for video! Sports Awards Ceremony, May 14 Thank you Coach Tran and our volunteer coaches for their hard work and dedication throughout their seasons! We could not offer these extracurricular opportunities without the generous gift of your time.
Student Packet Pick Up, May 19 & 20 It was a bittersweet couple of days as teachers got to see your faces during our drive through pick up, but also had to say goodbye for the summer! We can't wait to see many of you back next school year.
Graduation, May 21 Thank you to Fr. Wojciech, SCJ for celebrating Mass with the 8th grade students and their families! While this was not the send off anyone imagined, it provided some much needed closure to our students and teachers.
VALEDICTORIAN Congratulations to Nayeli Montoya, our Class of 2020 Valedictorian! Nayeli is a hard worker and a team player. She showed leadership in her class and was a member of the National Junior Honor Society for 2 years. She will be attending Duchesne Academy in the fall. We wish the best of luck to all of our 2020 graduates! We know you will continue to do great things in your future. You will be greatly missed at OLG! Passing of the Candle, May 21 This is a special OLG tradition that usually takes place during Mass, the week before school ends. 8th grade students literally pass the flame, which symbolizes leadership, to the 7th grade students who will be the leaders of the school next year. We were not able to make this happen in person, but Mrs. Mechler created an opportunity for the students to share this inspiring moment together. Thank you Mrs. Mechler and the 7th & 8th grade students for sending videos!
Click here for video! Last all-school Mass, May 22 All school Mass is typically celebrated on the last day of school, before awards ceremonies and class parties. Even though we participated virtually, we wanted to keep as many of these traditions as possible! Thank you to those who watched the live-stream and sent us your pictures.

Yes, we did not have the Gala this year which puts us a little behind. However, we have our God and Our Lady who continue to watch over us. We give God thanks and glory for protecting our school community! We know that He will continue to provide our every need. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. "All who rage against you will surely be ashamed and disgraced; those who oppose you will be as nothing and perish. Though you search for your enemies, you will not find them. Those who wage war against you will be as nothing at all. Isaiah 41:10-12
