Highlights
of 2019

Welcome to our AGM booklet, which contains a roundup of 2019,
a preview of our future plans and details about how to vote at the
AGM. I’d like to take this opportunity to encourage you to use your
vote, because every member and every vote counts.

I’m delighted to say Skipton Building Society had another good year in 2019. Both
our mortgages and savings balances increased, despite a challenging market. That
performance has allowed us to continue to provide long-term good value for our members
in a low interest rate environment. In 2019, the average savings rate we paid was 0.54%
higher than the rest of market average for banks and building societies*.
Some of my personal highlights of the year include the launch of our app and our new
financial advice proposition, which is designed to make financial advice accessible
to more people. It’s fantastic that we won Best National Building Society at the What
Mortgage Awards for the sixth year running too.
I’m also proud that Skipton has joined a growing number of global organisations
committed to supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We’ve
set ourselves some challenging targets and you can read more on pages 16-19.

“It’s important to me to work for an organisation that
cares for both its customers and colleagues. I thrive on
a challenge and in an environment where the team has
strong values that won’t be compromised. I’m keen to
help people develop and grow and I’ve dealt with many
cultures and segments of the financial services industry.
I also have wide experience in conduct risk and change

Taking action where we
have the greatest impact

Send less than 1% of waste to landfill by 2022
We’re really proud that we’ve managed to achieve
this target three years early, introducing segmented
bins at head office. We want to maintain this while
focusing on reducing overall waste volumes.

Eliminate single-use plastic across the
Society by the end of 2020
We already use compostable food trays, have an
eco shop in head office and we’ve decreased the
use of plastic cups, with many colleagues using
their own cups instead. We’re going to maintain
our focus and encourage the use of more
sustainable products so we can reach our target.

Halve our carbon footprint by the end of 2022
We use a renewable source of electricity, we’ve
committed to plant 15,000 trees in the Woodland
Trust’s Northern Forest and have two electric cars
in our fleet. We’ll do more over the next three years
to make a difference.

In 2019, to support our target of helping 1,000 homeless people by the end of 2022,
we launched a brand new scheme called Community Giving.

We invited the mortgage intermediaries we work with (and their colleagues) to nominate
local community groups that actively support housing and homelessness initiatives to
receive one of 40 pots of £1,000. We received a great response and we’re planning to
do it all over again in 2020.
