January 2021 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. Matthew 2:10 Happy new year! So long, 2020, it’s 2021. How many of us are relieved? But do we expect everything to change on January 1? Is that reasonable? As we put up that calendar, we see 12 new months ahead, and we see a potentially effective COVID vaccine beginning to be distributed in Dubuque. There are even more vaccines ahead, and perhaps the first glimpse of the end of the pandemic! In the first weeks of January 2021, though, we are still very much living in the midst of the pandemic. Things didn’t change the day the first vaccine was administered. Even if we were to imagine the whole town was suddenly given the shot today, would you expect things to return to normal tomorrow? Will we all go out for dinner, to the movies, on a plane? Will the strained and exhausted relationships be healed later this week? Will the deep rifts and hurt in our country suddenly vanish? Of course not. In January we celebrate Epiphany. The common image associated with Epiphany is that of the three wise men who came to pay homage before the newborn Lord. In our Nativity scenes, we tend to simply include them as characters present on that first Christmas night. But in scripture, it appears they showed up a couple years later. They followed the light of a star, guided by a distant light, a far-off promise to behold and pay homage to the newborn King of the Jews. This journey took perhaps two years, being drawn toward this light in hope. It took time, patience, and the journey only became more dangerous when they arrived in Israel – yet they continued on, hoping, following. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him. They were led, and the light and promise of God were revealed. The promise of God was true, here on earth, dwelling among us. Epiphany celebrates when our incarnate God was revealed to the Magi, and thus, to the world. Because of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Word made Flesh, the world is no longer the same, even when we can’t immediately see it. So, 2021. Again, I say, yay! And although a year is simply a way we reckon the time it takes for the earth to orbit the Sun, measured at 365.25 rotations, years also help us to frame the progression of time, the way we place events like births and marriages and festivals. And they also can help us look ahead, to imagine new days ahead. The past is over. We’re looking ahead to tomorrow. And although we can’t fully see that light, like those Magi, we can keep heading toward it, know- ing that when the light is revealed, it will be the light that reveals the glory and majesty and wonder of God’s love for you.
Covid could not, would not, stop the St. Peter Sunday School Children from sharing the Christmas Message. Their Christmas Program, “Peace, Peace, Prince of Peace” was shown virtually during worship on December 20. Preparing for it meant coordinating many moving parts. For one, we used Zoom to record our 4th and 5th graders reading the Christmas Story. Also, other than two groups of cousins able to be together to videotape, we had to schedule all other families to stop by the church individually so we could safely videotape them in costumes and record their part for the song, “Prince of Peace” by Monica Scott. We had Aiden Wernimont, Miranda Kettmann and Nora Schoeny sing the solo verses with Pre-K – 5th grade joining on the chorus. Kristine Fishler did a marvelous job of editing, splicing and turning all our video footage into the final performance. Thank you to all the parents for getting their kids signed onto Zoom to record or for bringing them to church for their taping. Our wish for all of you is that you come to recognize and welcome this “Prince bringing us Peace” – Our God come to be right here with us! ______________________________________ Our “NOISY” OFFERING will help with the cost of supplies for our Sunday School on Zoom. Our coins have totaled $126.67 so far! Thank you! We continue to have 22-24 kids joining us on Zoom on Sunday mornings. ______________________________________ This Sunday, January 3 - Sunday School Packet Pick-up from 10:15-noon. *No Sunday School on January 3* Our annual Live Nativity was a wonderful event, both for the St. Peter members participating and for the community, with its message of hope. Thank you to Ann Mauritzson, Linda Sorensen and Jean Kapp for stitching up some new cos- tumes so we had enough and no one had to share. Thank you to everyone who had a hand in making this year’s event a big success! -Miriam Bjornstad, Education Coordinator, and Jim Petersen, Lay Ministry Director 2
Well, 2021 is finally here. All of us will vividly remember 2020 for the rest of our lives because of the pandemic which consumed our waking hours. From the loved ones we had to say goodbye to, to the people we were not able to visit in our long-term care facilities, to the changes in our job situations. It created profound changes in all of our lives. I hope we can all look back and remember that God was always with us during the year and did not leave us. He is also with us as we look forward to 2021 with cautious optimism, knowing that vaccines have now become available, and that hopefully we will all be able to be vaccinated by mid-year. Glory to God for His giving us great scientists that were able to come up with a vaccine in record time. At St. Peter, we continue to have much to be thankful for. Along with all our Board Directors and Staff, I will be giving you a look at what we accomplished toward God’s mission here at St. Peter in the upcoming Annual Report to come out in January. I do want to thank everyone who helped us get through this past year. Pastor Matt, Miriam, Kristine, Christine, Jim Daack, our tech people: Ben, Aaron, and Rick, and our custodians Angie and Steve Puls. Also, all of our member volunteers whose efforts allowed us to stay connected with our Church family. I am looking forward to 2021 as I’m sure all of you are also. We will have Calvin Konop join us in January as our Associate Pastor, with a focus on our Youth programming, but also helping with visitations, preaching, and outreach. We are all excited about the 11 years of experience Calvin brings in Youth leadership and how he will help us get the next generation excited about God’s Word. They are our future and we hope to attract more families to our congregation with this initiative. Our plan is to stay with in-person worship services, barring any spikes in infections, and, as our members begin to get vaccinated and feel safer coming to church, that our attendance will come back. Our decision on the number of services will depend on this increase in attendance. In closing, thank you again for everything you have done to continue the mission of St. Peter Lutheran Church of Dubuque. We are a strong Congregation and will come out of this pandemic as a stronger Christian community serving our Lord. - Doug Horstmann, Executive Director for the Parish Planning Council Thank you to everyone who purchased a poinsettia to brighten our altar for Christmas! We had 52 beautiful flowers to enhance our decorations. Thank you to everyone that helped decorate before Christmas—you are very talented. Thank you to Darleen Sarvis and Sheila Sharkey for using their talents to arrange the poinsettias so perfectly! Poinsettias can be picked up anytime the office is open—just call ahead (563-583-0860). If you take yours after church on Sunday, please mark the checklist in the sacristy if you do, so we know you have it. Or let us know if you want to donate it to a shut-in. 3
