Hello and welcome to both SERSC and Normanby players and supporters. We hope you enjoy your day at our club. We look forward to watching some hard fought battles out on the field today. To our Moa men, continue to hold our club values high and represent IURFC with pride #upthemoa While today is about rugby, we also come together to acknowledge the passing and pay tribute to two great men within our club community, John Mackie and Murray Dombroski. The impact of COVID-19 has meant we have been unable to mourn the loss of these men together until now. Following our games today, we invite you to share in the reminiscing of John and Murray by raising a glass to them as we celebrate their lives and their contribution to our club. At this time we would also like to send our condolences to Charlie Brown and his family on the loss of their beloved wife and mother Dianne just before lockdown. While already a difficult time, this has been made harder by the restrictions around funerals at the time of Dianne's passing. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to you all. Andrew John Mackie, known as John or Watch, joined IURFC on leaving high school. John played his first game for the Senior team on 26th April, 1952 against Toko. John began his career as a hooker and ended it as a lock. John made the Taranaki team in 1953 and over the next 11 years, John would amass 85 first class games for Taranaki, playing 19 Ranfurly Shield games before retiring from representative rugby in 1964. After his retirement, John continued to play for IURFC. As a player, John was part of the winning IURFC McMasters Shield Team in 1960. He then went on to coach teams to 5 more titles in 1970, 1978, 1979, 1981 and 1983. John contributed to our club, not only as a player and coach, but also as a manager, president, chairman, and club captain over the years. He also served on the TRFU Management committee from 1973-79 and as a TRFU Selector from 1972-77. John was made a Life Member of IURFC in 1982. Murray Edgar Dombroski, or Dombo as he was known, spent his playing days at IURFC before his passion turned to refereeing the game. Murray featured for 17 consecutive years in the top five, including five in a row at No 1 (1985-1989) for TRRA. In the 1970s and 1980s Murray would ref 37 first class games, including 25 New Zealand appointments of which 11 were first division NPC matches. One of these games he replaced Glen Wahlstrom (1989, New Plymouth) and awarded a try to son Wayne, as Taranaki famously beat Wellington 11-9. He would then referee 1 international between Taranaki and Fiji in 1990. Murray then turned to coaching and mentoring, and was an influential figure coaching many local referees. Murray was TRRA president in 1971, TRRA chairman 1988-1991 and was the Inaugural winner of the Brian Duffy Memorial in 1988 as the most dedicated member that year. He was awarded TRRA life member in 2001 and was a NZRRA executive 1992-1999. Thank you John and Murray for the impact you have had on our club and the game we love. Your legacies will continue to live on. Rest in Peace.
