The Weekly Newsletter of the Only Normal Rotary Club in the World Chartered June 17, 1949 The Normal Spoke SERVICE ABOVE SELF RI No. 3282 District No. 6490 August 26, 2020 Volume No. 72 Issue No. 09 Link to Rotary International http://www.rotary.org/ Normal Rotary Website: http://www.normalrotary.org/ District 6490 Website: http://rotarydistrict6490.org/ (The District Newsletter is on the left side of the main page) Reporter: John E. Bishop Editor: Kathy Alexander Photographer: KA President Fred Hahn convened the Aug. 26, 2020 meeting of the Normal Rotary Club via Zoom. Gordon Bidner offered the invocation. President Fred noted several reasons why Aug. 26, the 238th day of 2020, is an important day: ● On August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment to The U.S. Constitution guaranteeing American women’s right to vote was proclaimed to be in effect by Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby. India also celebrates this day as “Women’s Equality Day”. ● On this date in 1883, the island volcano Krakatoa began cataclysmic eruptions, culminating in 7 massive explosions throughout the day. At 310 dB, each eruption was heard 3000 miles away and caused tsunamis 100’ high. Skies were darkened world wide and blood red sunsets persisted for 5 years. Global temperatures decreased. ● This is National Dog Day. Created in 2004 by Colleen Paige it is now celebrated worldwide. They have been our best buds for 14,000 or so years and deserve a special treat in their food bowl tonight. ● In 1947, Dan Bankhead became the first African American pitcher to transition from the Negro League to The Major League. ● Macaulay Culkin is celebrating his 40th anniversary of his birth at home, alone. ● The first Edsel rolled off the assembly line in 1957. ● Your Birthday Horoscope for today is pretty much a repeat of the last two weeks but in the interest of due diligence, I must inform you that for a life partner, you should choose another Virgo. Anyone else will be a project.
Announcements: ● WGLT – Dana Vollmer has contacted Fred – How is Normal Rotary coping with COVID 19? ● Update on Ray: Staying at Eureka Hospital for post procedure therapy. Carol is visiting him every day. Doing well. Ray is not happy to be there – wants to be home. Jack recommends sending cards to the home address. ● Ken and Becky Ropp will be taking over as host parents for Luis. ● Larissa McIlvain gave birth to a son, Levi James was born on August 14, weighed 8 lbs and measured 21 inches. He is super cute per Dayna.. ● Hank: Rotary District Conference is October 3 from 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM and online – no cost. Multiple breakout sessions. First 150 registrants get a copy of the keynote speaker’s book. ● Becky: Polio is officially eradicated from Africa. The virus, which gravely affects children, was once common there and has no treatment or cure. Governments and nonprofits have been working since 1996 to try to purge the virus from the continent, and almost 9 billion vaccines have been delivered during that time. Scientists and health experts have waited years to make sure the virus is truly gone, though it will inevitably resurface at much smaller scales among some populations. US Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar called it "a historic day for global health," and the World Health Organization called it a "great day" for the world. ● Hank: District Grants are due on September 1. What can we do to get a grant in. John E. Bishop has sent out a request for proposed projects due Thursday 8/27. ● Fred provided a report of the most recent B-N Area Club Presidents’ Meeting: The meeting was called by Joe Mikulecky to share how each of the six B-N Rotary Clubs are adjusting to social isolation effects that have been brought on by Covid 19. Participants representing Sunset, Normal, Bloomington, Sunrise, Family and Daybreak Clubs discussed the major issues that each are facing. Fundraising has been seriously hampered because, not only social distancing requirements but also the unknown time that we will be affected. Most of the events require in-person contact, and our Rotarians and their families are experiencing varying degrees of risk. The larger scale events, such as Oktoberfest, require pre-planning and fiscal commitments, and even small events and fundraising are made difficult or impossible without person-to-person contact. Club meetings have settled mostly on a virtual format, some with an in-person component. All clubs are using the Zoom with the meeting structure modified to work within the practical limitations of the platform. Clubs are meeting on their regular schedule. Attendance is suffering. One positive note is that speakers can be brought in from almost anywhere, opening up the options available. The club presidents agree that the meetings are getting easier to manage and members are getting more comfortable with the virtual format. We agreed that an on-line presence is critical. The clubs each have a website and are using other social media. The younger clubs are not using Facebook as much as the older folks. It was pointed out that having multiple media outlets will reach a broader base. All agreed that whatever media we choose, it must be constantly updated.
Judge: The Most Honorable Bruce Bergethon: ● Judge Bruce attempted to fine Becky Goeckner for not wearing a pin for her 50th wedding anniversary announcement in the Pantagraph. Becky refutes this and a motion was made from the floor to fine Judge Bruce for judicial impropriety (in-judical propriety?). [Editor confirms Becky is wearing her Rotary pin in the photo.] ↗
● Drake: Happy to have appeared in the District Newsletter for showing off malaria prizes (Global Top Award) for 2012 and Jan 2020, and for awarding donor Judy Stone a ruby PHF pin. ● Hank: Happy that his son is celebrating his 1 year anniversary at his job and closing on his house this Friday. ● Bruce – happy for a new driveway and having grandsons handprints included.
Speaker: Today’s program was led by Fred Hahn and included the following topics: Share comments on: ● How are you doing with balancing work, family, friends and school? ● How do you convey optimism to yourself and to your family? John E. Bishop – trying to get up early and keep things moving for my wife who is back in the classroom full time. Fred – sharing post cards with family in lieu of travel. Art – Some who were previously loyal members have not been in attendance at online meetings. Have they been in attendance at in person meetings? Jack – has been going out and meeting with people. Suggests possibly pulling together more in-person meetings, maybe at Comlara Park where we can spread out? Art – Not comfortable with face to face meetings. Do we have the capability to stream online f hybrid meetings? Could do a Facebook live or have someone in the meeting with a camera. That i not great for zoom though. Bruce – agree we need to reach out to our members who are not attending online and let them know that we miss them. Dayna – the survey that was sent found that some are Zoomed out, some don’t like the technology, and some have filled the Wednesday noon time slot during their workday. Thought for Today: “Leave everyone you meet better than you found them. Become an encourager of potential rather than a destroyer of confidence.” Robin Sharma, author of The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari
