Hygienically Speaking Winter 2020 Can you believe this year is almost over?! We have had 3 successful meetings, with just a few technical difficulties. We have elected our 2020-2021 Delegates, held the first ever GHDHA Virtual Big CE, helped our community, celebrated student successes, and worked together. I am so proud to be your President and am looking forward to more! If you have not made it to one of our virtual meetings, please join us! Houston is such a big and spread out city and for some, driving to meeting an hour or more every month is just not possible. I hope with the meetings being virtual, hygienists who may have not been able to join us at the face-to-face meetings can join us virtually. So, make sure to invite people to the meetings. Students, members, non-members (CE will be $15), educators, clinical hygienists, public health hygienists, anyone! If you ever need anything or think there is something that GHDHA can do, please feel free to reach out to me. We are in this together. ❤ Thank you, I am so honored to serve you, Shawna Greer, R.D.H., B.S.D.H. GHDHA Student Liaison News from Alfa Capetillo & Kristen Valenzuela On Wednesday August 12th, GHDHA visited UTSD students virtually via WebEx During their New Student Orientation. Representatives from the organization included GHDHA President Shawna Greer, GHDHA Student Liaisons, Alfa Capetillo and Kristen Valenzuela. Pizza was served for lunch and sponsored by GHDHA. The virtual presentation described ADHA and its importance in the hygiene profession. An emphasis was placed on navigating monthly meetings during the pandemic and how to stay involved from a distance. We are excited and can’t wait for the Class of 2022 to unleash their potential! Thank you to the UTSD Faculty and Staff for inviting us to present and helping make this a successful event. In addition to this event, on Wednesday September 30th, GHDHA and BADHA visited virtually with the new students at HCC. Students were welcomed by BADHA President, Chriszelda Luna and Student Liaisons Alfa Capetillo and Kristen Valenzuela. During the presentation we emphasized the importance of dental hygienists working together to promote and protect our profession. Students were also quizzed over the structure of the ADHA and other ways dental hygienists can get involved in the community. Students were invited to nominate members for a “Spotlight Feature” on Facebook as well as participate in an “ADHA Instagram Takeover”. Thank you to HCC faculty for coordinating this event. All in all, our virtual visits with both schools were a huge success and the collaboration of GHDHA and BADHA serves as an encouragement for students to work together to move our profession forward!

We are grateful that we have been able to return to campus to continue our hands-on learning. We are thankful that our patients have stuck with us and have been so patient while transitioning back to clinic. Our program has implemented strict protocols to ensure that everyone stays safe and healthy. We continue to remain optimistic about the future as we head into the new year. Pima Medical Institute Cohort 9 We are so thankful to be back in clinic working with live patients. It is an enlightening experience. We are enjoying our patients and they have been most informative with their feedback, they are purposeful in giving us feedback and enhancing our skills. We are each grateful to be working directly with a classmate as our clinician assistant. It not only makes the learning experience more fulfilling, but it is also nice to collaborate with a fellow peer. We are all looking forward to our new patients and eager to master our skills. It has been an interesting year but we have adapted and overcome the obstacles that have come our way and we will be better clinicians because of it. Pima Medical Institute (cont.) Cohort 11 Semester 1 is finally complete! We've challenged ourselves and have continued the journey into the world of dental hygiene with amazing faculty that will guide us to the end and classmates that will be by our side. We will continue to pick each other up when we fall and cross the finish line hand in hand. Semester 2 here we come! – Krista Charles Cohort 12 What a wild start to our Dental Hygiene program career at PIMA! Covid-19 has changed the way we think of attending school but we remain motivated to excel in our classes. Cohort 12 is working hard to make the most out of our time with our professors as well as our time with one another to study. We are thankful to have one another to lean on and learn from as well as the support we have from our professors. As we move along into our program, we hope to make our professors proud! Cohort 12 can’t wait to tackle what is next to come in our first semester and beyond! – Olivia Dahlman
University of Texas School of Dentistry Houston The DH1 and DH2 students at UTHealth have been busy these past few months. The DH2 students put the pedal to the metal and finished Clinical Practice I and II by mid-October. Students collaborated with peers in order to work on patients with necessary qualifications that enabled them to complete requirements and competencies in what seemed like an impossible window of time. The clinic is not yet at full capacity, but things are steadily picking back up. The reopening of the Assessment Clinic is allowing the DH2 students to find more advanced patients (Class 3 and 4 calculus classification) to work on and get the necessary experience to increase speed and efficiency in doing things such as medical history and taking FMS in radiology. Clinic III began on October 15th and this time the students have 12 weeks to work through the requirements and competencies so everyone is easing up a little bit on the stress levels – hooray! DH2 with a patient in clinic DH1s practicing with typodonts The DH1 students embraced online learning and faculty did their best to present lessons on things like instrumentation as interactively as possible via virtual platforms. DH1 students practiced with their instruments in the Simulation Lab once a week and did a fabulous job learning the basic, essential instruments like the Barnhart. They’ve begun working on taking vitals, medical history, and extraoral/intraoral examinations so that they are ready to begin working on patients early next year! This fall semester has been a bit of a whirlwind experience requiring daily patience and flexibility, but those are essential qualities in a dental hygienist whether there is global pandemic or not. – Marie Sullivan
