Volume 3, Issue 1 Featured Colleague - George Bruce Meloney Bruce was born in North Sydney. He is the second oldest of five siblings: Pat, Ross, Karen and Sid. Bruce was named after his grandfather George. His grandmother Jean was a nurse and a teacher from Margaree. She took over the family business Fami- ly Footwear, in North Sydney after her husband died when Bruce’s father was just four years old. Bruce attended Thompson High School in North Sydney and then went on to study Retail at Algonquin College in Ottawa. While in college he worked at a shoe store and to this day remains friends with the boss. Upon completion of College, Bruce started his first job at another shoe store in Fredericton. There he met his wife Lizz from, Woodstock and they married March 10, 1971. They have three children Lynn, Kate and Nick. Bruce also managed a Stedman Store in Grand Falls before moving his family home to North Sydney in 1982. He managed the Family business while Lizz worked at the Shoe Tree in Sydney. In 1993 Bruce closed the Family Footwear and transferred to the the Shoe Tree with Lizz. They opened a clothing shop on the second floor “With You in Mind”. Bruce initially became a member of the Rotary Club in New Brunswick. He rejoined again in North Sydney and has served over 25 years with Rotary International. In those early years Bruce held the position of secre- tary with the president Alex Gilchrist which was a novel and somewhat awkward relationship for Bruce as Alex was his High School Principal. Over the years they have been and continue to be great friends. In 2000 Bruce became aware of Crossroads and agreed to become involved with our Transitional Employ- ment Program. He relates having several members working on TE’s at his clothing shop and is genuinely happy to say he would have no problem hiring any one of the members who worked for him. He remembers being impressed with their work. Bruce enjoys fly fishing for salmon, woodworking, cooking travel, and spending time at the cottage in Marga- ree. He is delighted to be grandfather to Katie’s son Mason age 2 with another grandchild due in June. He is excited to let me know that he has been married 38 years to his best friend Lizz and they have been together 40 years. Bruce is a member of the Sydney and area Chamber of Commerce and recently assumed the position of President. He is Vice Chair of the Sydney Ports Corporation. He is the newest member of the Crossroads Advisory board. We are very proud to welcome him to our Crossroads Community and look forward to his time with us! Interviewed by Doreen F.
