ABOUT OUR STAFF One of Friends of Rye Nature Center’s experienced educators will lead each group. No more than 16 children will be placed in a group. One additional assistant will be assigned to a group to maintain a low camper-to- counselor ratio; a second assistant will be added when necessary. All permanent staff are certified in Adult, Child, and Infant CPR and First Aid for First Responders. We are also trained to use EpiPens. Certifications are updated annually. Since we work with the Rye City School District for programs, our permanent staff are fin- gerprinted and pass the district’s rigorous background check. FRNC has an emergency action plan in place to ensure the safety of our campers and visitors at all times. Our action plan includes fire drill procedures, an evacuation plan, and lockdown policies. Our plan is reviewed and updated every year by the Executive Director and staff. Our evacuation plan and lockdown policy are also approved annually by the Westchester County Department of Health. Our summer camp is accredited by the American Camp Association. CAMP CURRICULUM Each day at camp, children will explore a theme that increases their awareness of the natural world. Curricu- lum is designed to reinforce the science component of the New York State Prekindergarten Foundation for the Common Core. Past themes include: birds of prey, reactions and explosions, and the poles of the earth. June Bugs instructors lead a variety of activities throughout the day. Hikes around the Nature Center grounds provide exercise and opportunities for spontaneous discoveries. Science activities allow children to predict, experiment, and make conclusions about their surroundings with the use of age-appropriate science tools. Educational games and dramatic play reinforce nature concepts. Art activities help children practice fine mo- tor skills, understand textures, and learn through the process of creation. For example, children will learn the body parts of an insect by piecing together a paper model of the abdomen, thorax, head, legs, and antennae.
