Nursery Education The Montessori Classroom In the Montessori classroom there are seven main areas these are: Practical life ~ The very first activities in a Montessori classroom develop the child’s ability to look after themselves and their surroundings. Children can practice dressing skills on specially made frames which allow them to try zips, buttons, bows and buckles. Maths ~ From an early age the child’s mathematical mind is supported and developed. Maths is taught in a very concrete way using sandpaper numerals and number rods, moving progressively to more abstract work with symbols and quantities. Sensorial ~ It is one of Montessori’s principles to always follow nature. Whenever the child tends to act spontaneously and constructively in any particular way Montessori helps the child along that path. Art ~ Painting and drawing are freely available in the Nursery and are encouraged to express themselves in this way. We have planned creative activities which the children can choose to take part in. A wide range of Art materials are available to the children at all times. Music ~ . The children create their own music with instruments and sing during daily circle time. Dancing and movement to music is also a regular activity. Culture ~ the children study a different continent each term. They explore the different animals, people and food through circle time, looking at books, story time and trying different foods. Outside play ~ being outdoors is very important. Children develop gross motor skills as they climb, jump swing and also social skills as they take turns on the equipment. Montessori believes that children should be in touch with the substance of their world. The children go on regular nature walks through our woods where they discover fox trails, different trees and insects. The children plant seeds and grow flowers and vegetables as well as feed the resident chickens. Records and teaching ~ Every child has a folder that records their progress and development, any areas that require extra attention are identified. All activities are presented on a one to one basis. Each child progresses at their own pace. We do not push the children but work with their natural tendencies to learn and create an environment which will support this natural development and encourage your child to reach their full potential.
