™ ISRI INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS @ AUSTIN • JUNE 2-6, 2015 Managing a scrap recycling business brings on unique challenges and situations that aren’t taught in the typical business school environment. Often times, new managers are thrust into their position without a complete understanding of the scrap business or the unique culture that has developed within the industry over the years. To fill this gap and provide these managers with a practical educational expe- rience, ISRI is pleased to offer the “Industry Leadership Training Program”. The program will address management situations typically experienced in the scrapyard – both in the head office and out in the yard. The coursework for the program has been developed jointly by the academic faculty of the University of Texas at Austin and some of the key business leaders in the scrap industry. As participants go through the program, they’ll develop the tools and develop the relationships with their peers needed to thrive in the industry. They’ll learn and understand not only how others in the industry are meeting the challenges for running a scrapyard, but help contribute to that conversation. PARTICIPANTS THAT HAVE GONE THROUGH THE PROGRAM HAVE FOUND IT TO BE A RICH AND REWARDING EXPERIENCE. “The ISRI Leadership Training Program was a great way to learn and explore about various topics and issues within our company as well as our industry as a whole.” – Anthony De Marinis, Operation Manager; Charles J. King Inc. “The lecturers provide valuable information relevant to running a scrap operation, but the true benefit is the cohort of like-minded people. These relationships will carry on for years to come.”– Chad Kripke; Kripke Enterprises, Inc. “Being a part of the inaugural class to ISRI’s Industry Leadership Training Program was truly a rewarding experience. It provides information on topics that will help anyone in the Scrap industry ‘Up their Game’ to meet the standards we strive for!” – Travis Cowart, Jr., Safety and Environmental Compliance; Southern Metals Recycling.
™ COURSE DESCRIPTION BUYING & SELLING SCRAP: UNDERSTANDING YOUR INVENTORY – In this course, you’ll learn the basic concepts of buying and selling scrap. The course will discuss the pros & cons of “timing the market”, warehousing scrap for a “rainy day”, hedging and other strategies that are commonly used for buying and selling scrap. ACCOUNTING & FINANCE – This course is geared for new managers that may not have a financial background. It will discuss important aspects such as the difference between a financial state- ment and a balance sheet, the importance of cash flow, lines of credit and the cost of money. ENVIRONMENTAL LAW – This course will give your new manager an understanding of the key legal and regulatory concepts that impact the scrap industry. Issues such as stormwater regula- tion, the Superfund Liability Equity Act, permitting and zoning will be covered. DEVELOPING PROPER MAINTENANCE AND TRANSPORTATION PLANS – The key to running a prof- itable and efficient scrapyard is minimizing the amount of downtime your equipment experiences. A maintenance plan can ensure production quotas don’t slip and that the equipment operates at its peak efficiency. In this course, you’ll learn how to develop a maintenance plan and the elements that are required to make it a success. EMPLOYEE RELATIONS AND UNDERSTANDING WORKPLACE COMPLIANCE – The scrap industry is governed by an alphabet soup of regulatory and legal compliance issues. Scrapyards that do not comply are open to major legal action from a host of government enforcement agencies. This course will cover some of these regulations and also discuss other issues that may impact the management of employees. THE IMPORTANCE OF RUNNING A SAFE SCRAP YARD – This course will discuss the importance of developing a culture of safety within your company, OSHA and the regulations that govern employee safety. It will also discuss why safety is important from an economic standpoint in reducing work- man’s comp claims, reducing downtime and why reducing and mitigating hazards at the scrapyard are so important.
