WELCOME FROM OCEANIA ATHLETICS PRESIDENT, Greetings from Saipan, and a warm welcome to the Athletes, Officials, Team Managers, and many other friends of the Oceania Athletics Association. Unfortunately, due to the Global Covid-19 Pandemic, I can’t be there in person, but it is with much pleasure that we welcome you to the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast City Council proudly supports the Oceania Invitational Series, and without their support, these meets would not be able to be held. The Oceania Invitational Series is an initiative to ensure that there are adequate competition opportunities available in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. With the Covid-19 pandemic continuing to affect travel, OAA needed to give athletes the prospect to have international competition within the region. The Oceania Invitational Series is also doubling as a significant development opportunity for the next crop of athletes. With the return of the Oceania Cup to be contested between selected teams from Australia, New Zealand, and a combined Oceania Team. To our Technical Officials and Volunteers, we thank you for your continued commitment to Athletics in the Pacific; these two meets would not be possible without your contribution. We wish all our athletes the very best in their final preparations for Tokyo and look forward to being together again, in person, in 2022. Robin Sapong-Eugenio Area President 2
WELCOME TO A CITY THAT THRIVES ON SPORT Sport brings people together. It unites them in competition but also brings a sense of companionship as teams and individuals strive for excellence. Sport is in the Gold Coast’s DNA. We have produced multiple world champions across dozens of disciplines and have hosted some of the biggest events on the global sports calendar. To have the Oceania Invitational Series right here is an amazing coup. It gives us the chance to not only showcase our facilities but to demonstrate our capacity in sports science, sports administration and logistics. We learned a lot from the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and continue to seek out national and international events for our key sports centres. This series gives your athletes a final chance to impress before the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. We know this will bring out the very best in administrators and competitors with Tokyo just around the corner. Away from the competition venues, I encourage you all to take time out and explore our city. From the beaches to the hinterland and our new $60.5 million arts gallery – we have a lot to be proud of and we want to share it with you. Good luck and enjoy the Gold Coast. Tom Tate Mayor 3
HISTORY: OCEANIA CUP Written by Bob Snow – OAA Life Member Oceania Athletics is pleased to announce a return of the Oceania Cup Team Competition to the Oceania Invitational Series. The Oceania Cup was awarded in 2001 and 2003, both the University of Queensland Team who was representing Australia at the competitions. This year’s editions will be awarded via a different method. The competition will be scored using the World Athletics Scoring Tables. These are the same tables used in the Ranking and Qualification system. The full rules for the competition can be found here. OCEANIA CUP – Port Vila, Vanuatu, 2001 The inaugural Oceania Cup was held at the Korman Stadium in Port Vila, Vanuatu on 14th July 2001. With Vanuatu’s large French-speaking population it was a big Bastille Day celebration, with the prime minister, the Honourable Edward Natapei, being present for the entire competition, and presenting the cup to the winners. OCEANIA CUP – Apia, Samoa, 2003 The second edition of the Oceania Cup was held in Apia, Samoa at Apia Park over two days – 26th & 27th June 2003. It was an ideal warm-up meet for those participating in the SPG in Suva which had the first Athletics’ event on 7th July. FULL ARTICLE: Scan QR Code or visit our website www.athletics-oceania.com 5
