BBHB SUCCESS DEFINITION • The BBHB Representative & Development Programme aims to develop each player and coach to their full potential, and defines success by whether our young people have: • Had a positive experience in the sport • Improved as basketballers; both with technical skill and tactical knowledge • Improved as people • Want to play for Hawke’s Bay next season
VALUES • We Before Me: We understand the importance of working for the team to achieve our common goals. We are stronger together. • Respect: We respect and value the differences and diversity in other people. • Pride: We understand that representing Hawke’s Bay is privilege, and we wear the uniform with pride in everything we do. • Toughness: We will do whatever it always takes to get the job done and compete with the highest levels of effort. • Resilience: We will be able to focus on the right things and respond with an appropriate reaction regardless of the circumstances. • Honesty: We will deal with each other honestly and with integrity in order to find solutions to meet our collective goals. Gratitude: We understand the importance of showing gratitude to each other.
OBJECTIVE • Produce Future Tall Ferns & Tall Blacks • Provide Coaching (technical and tactical) to players of high potential • Produce National Junior Team players • Provide leadership skills, tactical film skills and other holistic knowledge to athletes of high potential • Be able to help athletes of high potential reach their goals throughout their high school years and beyond • Do this at minimal cost. These athletes have time pressure (schedule), body pressure (workload), and high economic pressure ($$$ for NZ, Reps, School and other basketball experiences they earn)
SELECTION • The BBHB High Performance Group is a highly selective programme • It is designed to cater to players that play for New Zealand Junior National Teams, attend Basketball New Zealand National Junior Team Camps, or demonstrate the potential to reach this level and beyond (i.e. Playing Professionally and/or US College). • We believe we have identified athletes we believe rank basketball as their highest extra circular activity and possess the requisite work ethic, commitment and passion for basketball.

HEALTH & WELLBEING • Concussion Awareness • A concussion is a heavy blow to the head which can result in injuries to the brain. It goes without saying that your brain is extremely important to you. It can be difficult to ascertain the severity of a concussion at the time. It is always never worth risking a head injury when balancing the value of your brain against the value of one basketball game. • Nutrition • The food you put into your body is the fuel for your body to operate at the highest level possible. Having a high understanding of what type of fuel you are putting into your body is especially relevant when you are placing high demands on your bodies by attending multiple trainings per day or per week, and especially when you are playing in tournaments where you have repeated games in a very short space of time. How we fuel and re-fuel our recovering body can make a lot of difference late in tournaments, and over the course of a season. • Sleep • As members of the Hawke’s Bay Representative & Development Programme we urge all our athletes to acknowledge that their body is their tool, and to commit to looking after it. A good nights rest is the most crucial ingredient to having an active brain for healthy learning and play both on the court and off the court. Let Them Play This is a nationwide campaign launched by Basketball New Zealand that has been adopted by Basketball Hawkes Bay locally. • ‘Let Them Play’ focussed on sideline behaviour. • Part of the aim is to see a reduction in instructional or negative comments coming from the stands at all levels and fostering a safe and positive environment for our young people to enjoy the sport where spectators positively cheer on all participants.
