Freewheeling With The President Hi Members of the MO55CC. Safety 1st Winter is upon us, Please be seen. Bright lights and Bright clothing. Rear mudguard will help keep your back dry and the rider behind will benefit. As you all are aware Covid-19 has dominated the last six months and there is a degree of uncertainty regarding the future. Any functions to be organised for the latter part of the year will depend on Covid-19 out- comes, and you will be informed. Ride Captain Mark Thurgood has organised caravan park reservations for three tours Swan Valley, Albany and next year Busselton. Sue Blackham and Jo Smith have also organised a new Trip to Rottnest for February 2021. Winter is traditionally a time of low numbers at the clubhouse due to weather and holi- days up the coast. Since opening two weeks ago the numbers have been around twenty both times with fifty turning up to see Zak Kirkup, but unfortunately he turned up late and only spoke to a few. If you have any concerns about health and safety and prefer to ride in groups of ten or less from various locations that is still totally fine, I know there are some members still doing so. While winter can test our homes and fences, there are still some amazing days for riding albeit layered up for warmth and wet. Enjoy. We love to ride. Regards John Cox.
Members Cycling Achievements Kim Mercer The last edition of Cyclemania reported the impressive cycling achievements of Jan Mil- lar and Barry Kershaw. This time it is the turn of Kim Mercer. Kim also has been a high achiever in cycling as can be seen by his impressive array of medals and trophies. He was state champion in 1978 for the individual 40km time tri- al.Then in 1980 he was state champion for the 80km team time trial. He also won the open state road race Midland to Toodjay and return in 1977. ( I can see Ironman Bur- rows very fast time for our winter lockdown time trial being seriously challenged). Kim was an early pioneer with the development of racing for the blind in WA. In 1982, with his blind partner Charlie Brown, they were state champions for the Bunbury to Perth race and state champions for the Alcoa 200. Then in 1983 he won the 4 th Australian Championships 54 km road race for the Blind with Charlie Brown and the 4th Australian 16 km time trial, also with Charlie. It is good to see that we have another experienced cyclist as a member of our club who is prepared to help others. Next edition will be “Crimpy's” turn (John Crimp) . Subject to censor clearance. Terry O'Shea. CYCLING ACHIEVEMENTS KIM MERCER 1977 1st Midland – Toodyay Return (Silver Coffee Service) 1977 2nd Hill Climb Championships (Canning Mills Rd) – (Silver Medal) 1978 1st State Champion 40km Time Trial (Gold Medal) 1980 1st State Team Trial – 80km (Gold Medal) 1982 1st Bunbury – Perth Bike Race (Gold Medal) 1982 1st Alcoa 200kms Tandem (Riding with Blind Association) 1982 3rd State Team Time Trials – 80kms (Bronze Medal) 1983 1st Australian Championships for the Blind – 54km Tandem road race (Gold Medal) 1983 1st Australian Championships for the Blind – 16km Tandem Time Trial (Gold Medal)
The Big Tree Mandurah A Great ride from the Big Tree Mandurah to South Yunderup Pelicans for coffee by the river. 14 members turned up for the ride. Great company and good conversation! Thanks All—Most Enjoyable!
Time Trial Status and Planned New Event Our 16km Time Trial that was introduced as a bit of fun during the lockdown has prov- en to be quite popular. Over 50 times were presented from about 30 members. At the time of writing Mike Bur- rows is still the fastest with a blistering time. But I do hear that there will be a last minute challenge? We have had one late entry from our past Ride Captain Andy who came close to Mike. Unfortunately YOUNG Andy's age was his handicap. So far 6 prizes have been awarded to: Iris Richards, Ron Richards,Peter Nicolay, Mike Burrows, Jan Millar and Barry Kershaw. Of the remaining 4 prizes one will go to Rick El- lis for his support and determination and one to Andy McLeavy the “quiet achiever”. That leaves 2 to be decided. Because of increasing interest plans are in place for a new course to be introduced that will be 8km each way. New Event Currently a small team is working on another event that will require your analytical and mental skills, not just strength and fitness. It will be more of a “thinking persons cycling sport” and will be held late spring or early summer. At this time the event is top secret so watch this space for further details. Stay Safe, Terry O'Shea

On 25th June we rode the Perth Heritage Trail. This ride will be put into our calendar and be known as Stan's Heritage Ride. 15 people took part in the challenge. A total distance of 42.3km with 385 m of climb- ing and 386 m descending. First stop was Darlington coffee shop. We then returned to the trail, arriving at Mt Helena for lunch, then a nice descent back to the Belluve RSL. A stop at the tourist information centre on the way, where George told us the history of the rail trail. [See the front cover for main photo]
