June 13, 2021 Page 3 A Message From Deacon Pat Gerace How does one begin something like this? I guess you begin at the beginning. So, here goes. My name is Patrick Gerace. I am an Ordained Deacon in the church and have been for 34 years. Actually, May 23 is my ordination date. So, I’ve been around awhile. Not a fossil yet, but getting there. Why am I writing this to you? Well, because I am returning to Infant Jesus after 22 years. My ordination has been an adventure in many ways and truly one that has both surprised me and challenged me. When my wife Irene and I moved here from Queens, it w as really a country town. We felt it would be a great place to raise our children and it did not disappoint. The thing I did not realize was it would be a great place for me to grow as a man of faith, something that was sorely missing in my life. I can still remember when I first attended mass at Infant Jesus. I was a NYC Police Officer for ten years by then, and it was safe to say I was somewhat cynical. I left mass that day a different man than when I went in. I can safely say the Lord spoke to me that day and my life changed from that moment on. The call to the Diaconate became strong in me and so, after four plus years in the seminary, I was ordained on May 23, 1987. I spent 12 years here at Infant Jesus . It was a time of learning for me. I realize now, I had to grow in this ministry and learn. In addition, I learned I needed encouragement along the way, and I received that from my lovely wife of 55 years, and from the people of Infant Jesus. After 12 years here, we moved to Rocky Point, and I was transferred to St. Marks parish where I have been since. After 22 years there, a conversation with one of my sons and Irene changed everything. Both of my sons are men I’ve attached a certain wisdom to. They ar e go-to guys for me, and if I’ve had questions, I always got good answers from them and Irene. One night Bri, Irene and I are watching the 400th Hallmark movie during this lockdown. The Diaconate comes up and Bri says, “Pops, wouldn’t it be great to go back to IJ where it all began.” I’ve got to say, that got my attention. IJ has always been home for me and I realize, in my seasoned years, it would be great to come home. I ran into Fr. Patrick. Over the years, he has always been kind to me and inviting. We spoke, and here I am. You’re stuck with me. My hope, my prayer is that I may serve you well. In the end, that is what it means to be a Deacon. I realize I’ve left some very important things out here. Ir en e an d I have fou r children. Brian, Gina, Charles and Lenore. I have twenty grandchildren. I am most richly blest. I am also most richly broke. A contradiction, I know. We are busy. We attend more sports than I knew existed. I still can’t figure out Lacrosse, but I know it has a lot to do with putting a ball in a net, that I got. I could go on and on about my grandkids but space is limited. I’ve worked at Hope House for thirty five years. I guess you could say I am a fixture there. I work with great people including you-know-who. I almost forgot something very important. On June 3, 2020, our first great grandchild was born. Christopher Alexander was accepted into the family with great love! I have left out a lot for obvious reasons called space. Suffice to say, the Lord has blessed me greatly in this life. Returning to Infant Jesus is another great one. Deacon Pat ***

Page 8 June 13, 2021 Article #82 by Phil Griffith In 1968, Eunice Kennedy Shriver founded the Special Olympics for physically and mentally challenged children. Her husband, Sargent Shriver was the driving force behind the Peace Corps, Job Corps and Head Start. He was the U.S. Ambassador to France and a member of the Knights of Columbus. The K of C became an early supporter and contributed $250,000 in 1987 to the Special Olympics. K of C volunteers donate thousands of hours to this cause. Through 2011, the Knights have contributed $526 million to programs for children with special needs. The Special Olympics hold a significant place in the priorities of the Knights of Columbus. The Knights of Columbus believe that the Special Olympics demonstrates the intrinsic worth and dignity of every human being. We encourage all to assist in this worthy endeavor. Congratulations to this year’s Knights of the Year Award for Outstanding Service to our community! Infant Jesus Joan of Arc Council 1992 (L to R) Pete Helfrich; Michael Butera; and DGK Bill Dugan.
