April 25, 2021 Page 3 A Message From Father Francis Lasrado Good Shepherd Sunday The fourth Sunday of Easter is celebrated every year as Good Shepherd Sunday. The Gospel reading for each of the three-year cycle is taken from John 10; this year being Cycle B, we have the section from the middle of the chapter. Among the many titles Jesus gives Himself to describe His relationship with us, that of the Good Shepherd seems to be the most endearing. The image communicates the origin and destiny of Jesus’ relationship with us. Even though most of us are not familiar with sheep or shepherds, we can easily relate to this image. Reflecting on it, Pope Francis famously coined the phrase, ‘… living with the smell of the sheep’, while speaking on servant-leadership; just as Jesus, our Good Shepherd, knows His sheep, cares for them and gives His life for them, so must the leaders shepherd their community. If they identify with the people entrusted to them, constantly mingle with them, know their situation, take interest in their joys and sorrows, serve them selflessly and walk in their boots, they will most certainly be ‘living with the smell’ of the people to whom they minister. Jesus says, ‘I know mine and mine know me.’ The Shepherd knows us; the question is do we know the Shepherd? Just as the shepherd smells like the sheep, the sheep too must make it a point to smell like the Shepherd, that is, know Him and have in themselves the mind that was in Christ Jesus, to paraphrase St. Paul. Do we know the Shepherd? The sheep are known to be rather stupid, but one thing they most certainly know is the voice of their shepherd. Because they are so adept at distinguishing the voice of their shepherd, they are able to follow the lead of their shepherd rather than go after the false ones. Our knowledge of the Good Shepherd must not remain just at the head level; instead, it must come down to the heart level. Unless we know our Shepherd on a personal, heart to heart level, we will not be able to follow him in a committed way. During Eastertide when we reflect on the aftermath of Jesus’ Resurrection, we are quite fascinated by the transformation that took place in the lives of Jesus’ disciples following their recognition of Him in the post-resurrection appearances. They were liberated of the fear, doubt, shame and everything that kept their minds locked and vision blurred. As a result, they not only believed that He has risen, but were also willing to lay down their lives for their Shepherd. At last, they began to smell like their Shepherd. Richard of Chichester prayed that we may see Christ more clearly, love Him more dearly, and follow Him more nearly. Let us make that prayer our own.
