MASTERS PENNANT putts and the match remained tight with never more than 1 hole in it, either way. Jimmy gradually started vs CROMER to claw his way back and wins at 13, 14 (courtesy of a penalty shot for his opponent hitting a moving After a few weeks wait, last Sunday we got our ball) and 15 meant he was now 2 up with 3 to play chance to avenge our embarrassing loss at Cromer and looking likely to secure 2 of the 3 points with the winner taking out the division and needed. Whilst the drama of the moving ball ruling advancing to the knock-out stage. The strength of was unfolding, Knoxy was sitting on a 4ft putt for the wind made it very tricky for both sides and par on the 14th with his opponent only just on the potentially took away some of our home course edge of the green in 3. Given he had just won the advantage. 13th to go back to 1 up, I had mentally decided he was going 2 up but don’t you love matchplay! – his I named an unchanged side from the win over opponent holed across the green and he then missed Strathfield which meant that Coops and Bocko led and now it’s back all square. He bounced back with us out. Just like he has in many of his matches, a birdie at 15 but then lost 16 to be back to square Coops got off to a good start and kept building on playing 17. Jimmy halved 16 so he now couldn’t be his lead while Bocko was hitting it really well tee to beaten and a brilliant up and down from green and hit every one of the greens in regulation dangerously close to the out of bounds posts (at on the front nine but still found himself 1 down. least from my perspective!!) resulted in a 2&1 win for him and we now had 7 of the minimum 8 points Tony Holley and I were out next and had that we needed. Having hit two great shots, into the contrasting starts with me being 4 up after 7 and strong wind, onto the 16th green, Knoxy’s opponent Tony 3 down. Tony won a couple of the next four uncharacteristically put his second shot to 17 out of to get his match back to 1 down while I won all four bounds from the middle of the fairway so when to close out my match 8&7 and The Captain had Knoxy chipped stone dead to win the hole with a secured the first win (making up for last time’s par, we were guaranteed at least the point we needed half!!). Coops eventually ran out a 5&4 winner to get and we had won the division. us our next point while Bocko was also starting to wrestle back control of his match and when he Cranny, Browny and Knoxy all halved the last with knocked it onto the 15th green in two to set up their opponents and so they ended in two 1 down birdie and move 2 up, we only had to wait for one defeats and a 1 up win respectively a final overall more hole as he finished up his 3&2 win and we had match score of 9-6. maximum points from the first three matches finished and only needed a win and a half from the A special mention goes to Jimmy Little who was the remaining five matches to clinch the victory. Tony’s only one of us to go through his 6 matches in the fight-back, however, couldn’t be maintained and he division undefeated. eventually went down 3&2. There was plenty of support out there for us from Cranny and Browny also both got off to very the members and the whole Team would like to different starts with Cranny jumping out to an early thank those that came out on a very windy day. 3 hole lead while Browny struggled to find his form Doug Campbell Team Manager and was down by a similar margin. Whilst birdies at 8 and 9 and a par at 10 got Browny back into his match, unfortunately, Cranny’s match turned the other way as he lost 4 holes in a row to find himself CRAZY WHIST behind for the first time. Browny’s match remained all square through to the 17th when he missed he short putt for a half and both of them went to the last dormie. Given that we could now not win either of matches 3 and 4, the focus turned to the top two matches. Friday 6th July– 6.30pm for a 7pm start Jimmy Little is getting himself a reputation as a $20 pp including Dinner consistently slow starter and not to disappoint, he Bookings Recommended Please see Reception found himself 2 down after 7 whilst Knoxy was 1 up It’s nice and warm in the clubhouse! at the same stage. From an archive Tibby Playfair Edmund Playfair point of view - we know a little about when this Captain 1988-91 Captain 1988-1993 concession commenced and the changes to it over the years. So far we have not been able to find the Pauline McTaggart George McTaggart proposal in the Minutes that suggested such an idea Captain 2004-06 Captain 1997-01 in the first place, but an educated guess would be that it was introduced in the 1940’s, when the Club Margaret Verrills Peter Verrills had existed for twenty years and at much the same President 2009-11 Captain 2007-09, time as the Barling Trophy commenced. It was changed up to the present 25 years of membership and 65 years of age in 1979. The next change came in 2015 when the proportion of reduction was changed to 40%/60% which remains for exisiting Special Members. Both Men and Women play in competitions designed for the long suffering! The club has both the Barling trophy and the Dot Leonard trophy in the Annual Programme. Many of the Executive committee members, whom we will be looking at over the next few weeks would have gone on to be Special Members. "Special in Pattie Cropper (Life Member) name, Special in nature!" We have looked briefly over the past weeks at families who have been members of the club for a long time and the volunteer positions that they have filled. Detailed charts of both Club and Women’s committee members over the years are a very well used resource. (Collated and typed by Archive Committee member Judy Hore). These lists easily show a pattern of service and how much more is done before becoming a President and or a Captain or after stepping down. A glance at the Presidents and Captains Honour Boards in the Club house, for both the Club and Associates/Women’s committee, you will see familiar names appear and reappear. The stories to Vic Cropper be told show how many couples have become leaders of our club, and for three couples in particular, how they served at the same time as each Sandra Mellowes other, and the marriage survived!
