In Autumn term, Year 6 created a Woodslee Cookbook which gives ideas for delicious, tasty and affordable meals that can be enjoyed as a family. We hope you use these recipes and enjoy cooking them as much as we did! If you have a go at any of the recipes, please post pictures and share your family meals. Prices are a guideline, all food has been bought from Asda or Aldi. Stay safe and enjoy! Year 6 :)
Ingredients and method for starters Hummus INGREDIENTS Meal total - £2.06 1. 400g can chickpeas, drained (35p) 2. 80ml extra virgin olive oil (99p) 3. 1-2 fat garlic cloves, peeled and Serves 2-4 people crushed (39p each) 4. 1 lemon, juiced then ½ zested (33p) 5. 3 tbsp flavouring (if needed) METHOD 1. Rinse chickpeas 2. Tip into the large bowl of a food processor along with 60ml of the oil 3. Blitz until almost smooth. 4. Add the garlic and lemon along with 30ml water. 5. Blitz again for about 5 mins, or until the hummus is smooth and silky.
Salad INGREDIENTS 1. 1 100g bag wild rocket (92p) 2. 1/2 punnet cherry tomatoes, halved (63p) Meal price - £6.31 3. 4 tablespoons grapes/raisins (99p) 4. 2 tablespoons grapeseed oil or olive oil (99p) Serves 3-4 5. salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 6. 4 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese (£1.12) 7. 1 large avocado - peeled, stone removed and sliced (£1.20) 8. Cucumber (46p) METHOD 1. In a large plastic bowl with a lid, combine rocket, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, oil, and Parmesan cheese. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cover, and shake to mix. 2. Divide salad onto plates, and top with slices of avocado.
Chicken Kebabs INGREDIENTS 1. Chicken pieces (£1.98 precooked) Meal price - £5.23 2. Seasonings of your choice 3. 1 large onion (50p - 2 pack) Serves 3-4 4. 1 large pepper (£1.12 - 3 pack) 5. 1 Tomato (63p - 3 pack) 6. Skewers (£1 - 100 pack) METHOD 1. Cut your onion, pepper and tomato into chunks. 2. Season your chicken. 3. Put your chicken on your skewers in turn with peppers, onion and tomato.
Veggie Rolls INGREDIENTS 1. 1 cucumber (46p) Meal price - £2.86 2. a vegetable peeler 3. 4 ounces cream cheese, softened to room temperature (65p) 4. 1/2 cup of matchstick carrots (63p) Serves 3-4 5. a bell pepper (or two, if you want varied colors) (1.12 - 3 pack) 6. some optional herbs METHOD 1. Soften cream cheese to room temperature and mix with a spoon to soften. 2. Wash and dry your cucumber. Using a vegetable peeler, slice into really thin strips (thinner cucumbers work best). 3. Cut bell pepper into matchstick pieces. I used a quarter each of red pepper and yellow, but you could just use one or the other if it’s easier. 4. Spread a thin layer of cream cheese down each cucumber slice. On one end, place a handful of carrots and bell pepper, along with fresh herbs if desired (optional). 5. Roll up and serve!
Tomato Soup INGREDIENTS Meal price - £3.70 1. 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (£1.49) 2. 1/2 large onion, cut into large wedges (50p - 2 pack) 3. 2 (28-ounce) can tomatoes, we prefer to use whole peeled or Serves 2-3 crushed, see notes for fresh tomatoes (35p each - 70p) 4. 1 1/2 cups water, low sodium vegetable stock, or chicken stock (35p) 5. 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt, or more to taste (27p) 6. Garlic (39p) METHOD 1. Melt butter over medium heat in a Dutch oven or large saucepan. 2. Add onion wedges, water, can of tomatoes with their juices, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. 3. Bring to a simmer. Cook, uncovered, for about 40 minutes. 4. Stir occasionally and add additional salt as needed. 5. Blend the soup, and then season to taste.

Pitta Pizza Meal price - £5.92 INGREDIENTS 1. Large pitta breads (45p - 5 pack) 2. 1 tbsp tomato purée (27p) Serves 5 3. 1 tsp mixed herb (59p) 4. 1 tomatoes , sliced (63p) 5. Meat of your choice -torn into small pieces (chicken £1.98) 6. 50g cheddar , grated (£2) METHOD 1. Heat the grill. 2. Spread each pitta bread with 1 tbsp tomato purée, sprinkle over the mixed herbs, then lay on the tomato slices. 3. Divide the meat between the pittas. 4. Sprinkle over the cheese and grill until the cheese is golden and bubbling.
Tomato Pasta Bake INGREDIENTS Meal price - £6.98 1. 1 tbsp olive oil (99p) 2. 1 onion, chopped (50p) Serves 4-6 3. 1 garlic clove, crushed (39p) 4. 2x 400g can cherry or chopped tomatoes (70p) 5. few dashes Worcestershire sauce (76p) 6. 100g rigatoni or other tube-shaped pasta (£1.29) 7. 50g gruyère or cheddar, grated (£2) 8. Vegetable stock (35p) METHOD 1. Heat the oil in a medium pan and fry the onion for 5 mins. 2. Stir in the garlic and cook for a further min. 3. Mix in the tomatoes and stock bring to the boil and simmer for 20 mins. 4. Add a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce. 5. Drain the pasta and stir into the sauce. 6. Scatter over the cheese and grill for 3-5 mins or until bubbling hot and golden.
Chicken, Rice and Vegetables INGREDIENTS Meal price - £3.37/£3.48 1. Chicken (seasoned with your choice of herbs) (£1.98 - cooked/uncooked - £2.09) 2. Rice (Plain boiled or flavoured) (54p) Serves 2 3. Vegetables of your choice (broccoli, green beans etc) (85p mixed bag) METHOD 1. Cook the chicken for 25-30 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and no longer pink. Cooking time will depend on the thickness of the chicken breasts, so I recommend using a cooking thermometer to know exactly when it is fully cooked. 2. Boil your rice for 12/15 minutes until fluffy. 3. Boil your vegetables on a low heat for between 10-15 minutes (depending on how hard/soft you like your veg)

Ingredients and methods for desserts Meal price - £9.60) Fruit Salad INGREDIENTS Serves 4-5 1. FOR THE DRESSING 2. 90 g honey (£2) 3. 60 ml freshly squeezed orange juice (55p) 4. Zest of 1 lemon (54p) 5. FOR THE SALAD 6. 450 g strawberries, hulled and quartered (£1.55) 7. 170 g blueberries (89p) 8. 170 g raspberries (£1.89) 9. 1 orange, peeled and wedges cut in half (£1.19) 10. 200 g grapes (99p) METHOD 1. Cut up fruit into small sections. 2. In a small bowl whisk together honey, orange juice, and lemon zest. Add fruit to a large bowl and pour over dressing, tossing gently to combine. Chill until ready to serve
No bake flapjacks Meal price - £4.19 INGREDIENTS 1. 80g brown sugar (69p) 2. 3 tbsp golden syrup (£1.45) 3. 200g porridge oats (75p) Serves 4-6 4. 110g puffed rice like rice crispies (65p) 5. 1 tsp vanilla extract (65p) METHOD 1. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and set aside. 2. In a saucepan, combine the sugar with the golden syrup until dissolved. Remove from heat and set aside. 3. In a large bowl combine the oats, puffed rice and vanilla. Don’t over mix it as you will just squash the rice. 4. Pour the sugar and golden syrup over the dry ingredients. 5. Give it all a good mix and pour into the baking tray. 6. Place in the fridge to chill and cut into squares before serving.
Smoothie Meal price - upto £10 depending INGREDIENTS 1. 1 banana (75p) on fruit preferred. 2. 1 tbsp porridge oats (75p) 3. 80g soft fruit (whatever you have – Serves 2-3 strawberries, blueberries, and mango all work well) (upto £5) 4. 150ml milk (£1.09) 5. 1 tsp honey (£2) 6. 1 tsp vanilla extract (65p) METHOD 1. Put all the ingredients in a blender and whizz for 1 min until smooth. 2. Pour into two glasses and serve.
Microwave cupcakes INGREDIENTS Meal price - £6.70 1. 4 tbsp self-raising flour (45p) 2. 4 tbsp caster sugar (99p) 3. 2 tbsp cocoa powder (£1.09) Serves 3-4 4. 1 medium egg (99p - 6 pack) 5. 3 tbsp milk - (£1.09 - 4pt) 6. 3 tbsp vegetable oil or sunflower oil (99p) 7. a few drops of vanilla essence or other essence (orange or peppermint work well) (65p) 8. 2 tbsp chocolate chips, nuts, or raisins etc (optional) (45p) METHOD 1. Add 4 tbsp self-raising flour, 4 tbsp caster sugar and 2 tbsp cocoa powder to the largest mug you have (to stop it overflowing in the microwave) and mix. 2. Add 1 medium egg and mix in as much as you can, but don't worry if there's still dry mix left. 3. Add the 3 tbsp milk, 3 tbsp vegetable or sunflower oil and a few drops of vanilla essence and mix until smooth, before adding 2 tbsp chocolate chips, nuts, or raisins, if using, and mix again. 4. Centre your mug in the middle of the microwave oven and cook on High for 1½ -2 mins, or until it has stopped rising and is firm to the touch.
Banana Bread INGREDIENTS Meal price - £6.01 1. 140g butter, softened, plus extra for the tin (£1.49) 2. 140g caster sugar (99p) 3. 2 large eggs, beaten (99p - 6 pack) Serves 4-6 4. 140g self-raising flour (45p) 5. 1 tsp baking powder (65p) 6. 2 very ripe bananas, mashed (75p) 7. 50g icing sugar (69p) METHOD 1. Butter a 2lb loaf tin and line the base and sides with baking parchment. 2. Cream 140g softened butter and 140g caster sugar until light and fluffy, then slowly add 2 beaten large eggs with a little of the 140g flour. 3. Fold in the remaining flour, 1 tsp baking powder and 2 mashed bananas. 4. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for about 50 mins, or until cooked through. Check the loaf at 5-min intervals by testing it with a skewer (it should be able to be inserted and removed cleanly), 5. When cooled, Mix 50g icing sugar with 2-3 tsp water to make a runny icing and drizzle over the top.
