Welcome Throughout our 50th Anniversary season, we have been proud to produce several works that have explored our origins, our present and now. As we move into the New Year, we turn our focus to the future with the world premiere of Hull playwright Lydia Marchant’s brand-new comedy Mumsy. Developed through our Grow artist development programme, Mumsy is a must-see for fans of programmes like Motherland as Lydia explores the highs and lows of mother-daughter relationships in a highly entertaining and moving comedy. At Hull Truck Theatre we are excited to present a number of projects with a variety of co-producing partners both nationally and internationally. Anders Lustgarten’s gripping new play The City and The Town is presented in association with Matthew Linley creative projects and Swedish company Riksteatern, and we are thrilled to be working with our colleagues at Theatre by the Lake in Keswick on a joyous and theatrically thrilling production for all the family of the much loved Around The World in 80 Days. With a half term treat of a well-loved children story The Tortoise and The Hare, and exciting new productions by the brilliant Middle Child, Northern Broadsides and the return of the ever-popular Bouncers, there’s a huge amount to enjoy alongside some great music and comedy and a diverse programme of contemporary work in the Godber Studio to keep you entertained as we move

Booking & Box Office Information The Box Office is open Tuesday to Saturday, 11am until 5pm and from 1 hour before the show on performance nights. Pay What You Can Pay what you can performances are a great way to try something new or attend the theatre for the first time. You can pay as little as £1 per ticket. Shoot the Bull Café Bar The café bar is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 10am and 5pm. And from 5pm until the evening performance starts. On all other performance days, the café bar will be open from 2 hours before an afternoon show. And from 5pm until the evening performance starts. Last food orders are 30 minutes before the show starts.
Opening hours may vary for morning shows, please enquire with the Box Office. Drama Deal Get the best Band A seats and see more shows for less! Shows in the Drama Deal this season include MUMSY, AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, BOUNCERS, and QUALITY STREET. See two shows for £34, three shows for £48, or four shows for £62! Access Audio Description provides information about the visual elements of a show, for those who are blind or visually impaired. The Box Office can provide an infra-red headset, upon request, and audio description is delivered live, in between dialogue. Touch Tours are available 90 mins prior to the audio described show and last approx. 30 mins. Touch Tours allow blind and visually impaired patrons the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the set, costumes, and props, ahead of the show. Places must be booked with the Box Office, 48hrs in advance. Theatre captions are similar to television subtitles and convert spoken word into visible text that provides those
who are Deaf, deafened or hard of hearing with access to live performances. British Sign Language (BSL) performances enable Deaf BSL users to understand the performance through the signs of an interpreter, who is on stage during the performance. Relaxed performances are specifically designed to welcome people who will benefit from a more relaxed environment. They include additional lighting, a friendly attitude to noise and movement in the theatre and we can also offer additional space if requested. Assistance dogs are welcome in the theatre and performance spaces. If you are going to be accompanied by an assistance dog please contact the Box Office, in advance of booking, so that we can make arrangements to either seat you together during the show or dog sit for you. Baby Friendly Performances Advised for customers with children under 18 months, these performances will have a relaxed atmosphere and friendly attitude to noise and movement in the theatre. Facilities include additional changing tables both inside and outside of the auditorium, highchairs, bottle warming, buggy park, and a baby play area. Oh What a Night! takes you back in time on a musical journey through the incredible career of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. Valli’s unmistakable voice dominated the airwaves for more than two decades with classics such as Sherry, Let’s Hang On, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, My Eyes Adored You, December 63 (Oh What A Night), Bye Bye Baby, Who Loves You and many, many more. Selling over 100 million records worldwide, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons secured their place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Oh What a Night! combines infectious personalities, amazing vocals, slick harmonies, and even slicker dance moves to deliver a show full of energy and nostalgia which always leaves audiences wanting more. Wednesday 25th January – Wednesday 1st March Week 1-6: Every Wednesday, 7.00pm – 9.00pm Week 7: Comedy Graduates Performance Full Course Price: £80 Introduction to Stand-up Comedy with Kevin Precious Always fancied trying your hand at stand-up comedy but never got around to it? Ever watched a stand-up comedy performance and thought 'I'd love to give that a go?' Our 7-week course is designed to be a comprehensive introduction to writing and performing stand-up comedy and culminates with each participant getting the opportunity to perform their first gig. Participants will develop methods and techniques for generating self-authored comedy material; combined with the ability to deliver the material in front of a live audience. Workshops are every Wed evening, 7-9pm, for six weeks. Starting on Wed 21 Jan and ending Wed 1 Mar. Week 7 is the Comedy Graduates performance in the Godber Studio. --------------------------------------------------------------

February Wednesday 1st February, 7.30pm Tickets: £19.50 Phil Mcintyre Live present Lloyd Griffith: One Tonne of Fun After Lloyd’s last tour was interrupted by ‘you know what’ and ended up lasting 8 years or so, he’s BACK with a brand-new, fresh stand-up show for 2023. This is his biggest tour to date, and he is pumped / really needs you to come. Since school Lloyd has always been a showoff, doing anything he can to make people laugh, and 20-odd years later, nothing’s changed. There’ll be his unique bag of stand up, dubious impressions, and obviously a sprinkling of his (incredible) singing. The stars of ‘Tonight at the Palladium’ (ITV1) will spin comedy gold out of all the things that YOU, the live audience, think are the best, worst, and downright weirdest things about your hometown. Maybe a bit of local laughter really can save the day!
The Noise Next Door are thirteen-time sell-out veterans of The Edinburgh Fringe and have appeared on ‘The One Show’ (BBC One), ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ (ITV1), and ‘Roast Battle’ (Comedy Central). Spoken word meets dance, live music meets clowning. An intimate spectacle of identity, where being British, Iranian, and a Hip-Hop head collide. From Bristol to the Tehran marathon and back again, Bobak invites us to join him on a journey to accept his own heritage, against a media culture which holds fast to the idea that the Middle East is a frightening and dangerous place. A joyful evening of dance theatre, it's through meeting a series of weird and wonderful characters from across the world that Bobak is finally able to truly know himself. Recommended Age: 12+

Directed by Dritero Kasapi. When Ben returns home to his father’s funeral after 13 years away, he is confronted with uncomfortable truths about the past, present and future of the community and the family he grew up in and left behind. Tricky thing memories – not always the way you remember them. Anders Lustgarten’s new play is a funny, eclectic, and uniquely political piece of theatre that brings a fresh perspective to some of the political divides and problems facing our country today. Anders’ previous work includes Lampedusa (Hightide/Soho Theatre), The Seven Acts of Mercy (RSC) and The Secret Theatre (Globe). Directed by Dritero Kasapi (Artistic Director of Sweden’s National Touring Theatre, Riksteatern) whose previous UK work includes the acclaimed Nina – a story about me and Nina Simone (Traverse, Young Vic and UK tour).

The runner up in Dave’s Jokes of the Fringe 2019 talks about stripping down for a documentary, club nights that turned into afterparties and then into crime scenes, and finally starting to grow up and beginning to like the adult he’s become. Budding love, blossoming middle-age, exploring our roots, and unearthing buried treasures, lead us to discover what it means to ‘grow’… Collected from real local interviews from Allotmenteers, Metal Detectorists, Archaeologists, Grave-diggers, Forensic Anthropologists, and people who just love gardening, Ladies That Dig is a fertile blend of live music, comedy, and true tales from women who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty. Tickets: £7 per child Hull Truck Theatre presents Tortoise and the Hare Created by Luke Pearson and Tom Saunders The Tortoise and the The Hare absolutely love games. They play board games, sporty games, guessing games and they even invent games.
They are the best of friends, and they have lots of fun playing together…. But only if The Hare is winning! The Hare is a terrible loser and after losing yet another game to The Tortoise, The Hare hatches a plan to play a game that The Tortoise has no chance of winning… The Hare challenges The Tortoise to a race. If your child requires additional carers, please contact the Box Office to discuss. -------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday 16th February, 7.30pm Tickets: £23, Concessions £2 off JBA Concerts presents Swinging at the Cotton Club Take a step back into 1920s and ’30s New York City and through the doors of Harlem's hottest nightclub, 'The Cotton Club'! ‘Swinging at The Cotton Club’ is the action-packed show celebrating the music and dance of the Cotton Club – New York’s most celebrated nightclub of the 1920s and ‘30s.
Performances by Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Fats Waller would have had the club swinging - whilst dancers such as Bojangles Robinson and the Nicholas Brothers lit-up the stage with their breathtaking routines. In the show the exhilarating dance and music of the Cotton Club is recreated by the fabulous Lindy Hop Dance Company, alongside The Harry Strutters Hot Rhythm Orchestra, featuring American vocalist Marlene Hill and compere/vocalist Megs Etherington. -------------------------------------------------------------- Saturday 18th February, 7.30pm Tickets: £23, Concessions £2 off Sue Voysey presents The Clare Teal Four She’s back! Friday 24th February, 8.00pm Tickets: £13.50, Concessions £2 off Theatre Royal Wakefield presents Blow Down Written by Garry Lyons. Directed by Tess Seddon. A funny and poignant play which marks the recent demolition of the iconic cooling towers at Ferrybridge Power Station, in the words of those who lived and worked beneath them. Scripted by award-winning playwright Garry Lyons and based on stories collected from the local community in Ferrybridge and Knottingley, Blow Down is a hilarious, gritty and thought-provoking show with music about a typical post-industrial Yorkshire town. From the raucous seventies to recession and decline in the 2000s, it tells the tale of the area through the experiences of people who've lived there, offering surprising insights, authenticity, and humour. Post Show Q&A - Thursday 23rd March Hull Truck Theatre presents Mumsy By Lydia Marchant Sophie is going to be a third generation single Mum and she’s terrified. How will she afford to feed them both? Can she hold on to her job? What if she’s a crap Mum? Surely, she can count on her own Mum and Nan to help… Wrong! Rachel’s got used to having a life of her own and doesn’t fancy giving up pole class and Tinder to go back to changing nappies and no sleep. Having Sophie back home is really cramping her style. Meanwhile, after getting scouted to be an Annie Lennox impersonator on the P&O Ferries, her Nan’s having a three-quarter life crisis of her own.
In a one-bed flat in Gyspyville, Hull, three women battle through the friendship, drama, and love of mother-daughter relationships. For fans of A Taste of Honey and Motherland, this warm comedy has been developed as part of Hull Truck Theatre’s Grow Artist Development programme. He has performed to sold-out audiences at the world-famous Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, London Jazz Festival and

Growing up in the East Riding, James first started performing at NAPA and Northern Theatre Company in Hull. -------------------------------------------------------------- Saturday 4th March, 8pm Tickets: £13.50, Concessions £2 off Elysium Theatre Company presents The Island By Athol Fugard, John Kani and Winston Ntshona South Africa 1973, Robben Island, the top security prison where Nelson Mandela was held. John and Winston are sharing a cell. They survive through a mixture of solidarity, bickering, laughter and defiance. They are preparing a production of Antigone for the other prisoners, but Winston has trouble remembering the lines and isn’t sure he wants to play Antigone. The two men’s sense of brotherhood has kept them going for years, then John hears that he’s going to be released… The Island is one of the most famous plays of the second half of the 20th Century and has been seen all over the world. A rich, boisterous, funny, moving piece of theatre, it is a hymn to the human spirit and a cry for freedom everywhere. Elysium Theatre Company (www.elysiumtc.co.uk) is an

Tim and Hannah discover a viral video of a bar singing 'Mr Brightside' to their recently departed friend. Reading online comments they uncover stories of incredible people - all united by one song. Together they conduct an investigation into the chart-busting phenomenon and give you an unashamedly good night out in the process. No one knows what it is that’s terrorizing our home, causing all this to happen, but more importantly, not one grown-up seems to care.” Nora’s house has disappeared. Its foundations have cracked as it plunged deep into the earth. And do you know what? It’s not the first house in town to sink either. Join Nora and Donnie on their quest to uncover the town’s biggest secret. Why our town? Why us? Trapped in a place where the future is uncertain and the present is bleak, how do the young stay optimistic? Hull Truck Theatre’s Young Creators are a group of talented theatre-makers aged between 14 - 18 from across the city and region who come together to make bold, thought-provoking and contemporary theatre from scratch.
Hull-based playwright and poet Josh Overton has written the play based on the opinions, ideas and voices of the group. His previous work includes Faustus and Dungeons & Dragons (The Unofficial Adventure). Recommended Age: 12+ --------------------------------------------------------------
April Wednesday 5th - Saturday 8th April, 7.30pm 6th and 8th April, 2pm Tickets: £17 Northern Academy of Performing Arts presents Footloose Based on the 1984 movie which took the world by storm, Footloose tells the story of teenager Ren McCormack whose life is turned upside down when he and his mother move from Chicago to small-town Bomont. Things are made even more difficult when Ren learns that the town, led by Reverend Shaw, has banned dancing and rock music in a misguided bid for the safety of their teenagers. Taking matters into his own hands, Ren soon has all hell breaking loose when he sets out on a mission to get the people of Bomont back on the dancefloor! This iconic musical will have you rockin’ out to its contagious Oscar and Tony-nominated score, including classic 80s hits, “Holding Out for a Hero”, “Almost Paradise”, “Let’s Hear It For The Boy” and of course the unforgettable title track “Footloose”.
