WASO 2019 Masters Series Welcome to WASO In 1999 I arrived in Perth for the very first time to conduct Verdi’s Requiem with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Little did I know that this first engagement would begin a twenty year-long (and continuing!) love affair with Perth. I’m delighted that in this anniversary year I will once again conduct Verdi’s magnificent work with this incredible Orchestra. Reflecting on that first experience, and so many more unforgettable moments I’ve had here since, has inspired us to shape a bright and bold celebration of music in 2019. We welcome the exceptional Australian soprano, Siobhan Stagg, as our first Artist in Association. Siobhan has established herself as a much sought-after artist in the finest opera houses and concert halls of Europe and North America. In 2019 she will be our soloist in three concerts, singing music of Poulenc, Strauss and Verdi. We also welcome Nikolaj Znaider as our Featured Artist. Known perhaps more as one of the world’s finest violinists, he is also now much in demand as an inspiring conductor. In 2019 we are fortunate to experience both facets of his artistry - and I’m especially excited to appear as soloist in his concert! We celebrate the triumphant return of last season's Isolde, Gun-Brit Barkmin, in a gala concert and enjoy the Festival of Chamber Music nestled in Perth's favourite venue for intimate performances, Government House Ballroom. I hope you will bring a sense of adventure and discovery to our 2019 season as we bring to you exceptional performances of extraordinary music - glorious, audacious and beautiful.
