WELCOME TO AUTUMN Dear Friends, In mid-June, I received an email from one of our members and just had to share it. It was a story about a member’s daughter and her preschool class. The teacher in the class of 3 year olds asked the question: “What is your dream vacation?” The children in the class gave some of the responses you might expect: place like Disney and Florida. You also heard some fun response like going to a castle, taking a train ride, or visiting a new planet. What brought joy to my heart was the response from Lola, who quickly said… WINDING TRAILS. I do not think there could be a bigger compliment about our organization than Lola’s response that Winding Trails is her dream vacation. These past 16 months have been incredibly hard on everyone. What it has proven is just how pre- cious many things in our life really are. Prior to the pandemic, many of us took for granted things like going on vacation, watching a live sporting event or concert, and seeing loved ones. Having many of these things taken away, makes you appreciate them that much more. Speaking to many of you, I have heard countless stories of just how much you appreciate Winding Trails. Like Lola, many of you think of your time at Winding Trails as your “vacation.” It is an opportunity to spend time with family and friends in a safe, beautiful environment. Although you may have appreciated Winding Trails pre pandemic, your appreciation this past year has most likely grown even more. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who donated to our Trails Fund and our new Playground Project. Donations to the Trails Fund are up considerably over last year and we could not be more appreciative. The plans for the new playground at Dunning Lake are on schedule. We appreciate the donations made so far and all the support from the children who also helped raise money through our Playground-A-Thon. This was a great opportunity for children to not only help build something they will enjoy but also teaches the importance of giving back and helping the greater com- munity. In September, we will have one last fundraising event with our “Fun-Raiser” at the Boathouse. This adults only event will be a fun evening of food, drink, trivia, and an auction to raise money for the playground. We hope you will be able to join us. Space is limited, so register early. Please take the time to read through this entire newsletter. We have some great stories to share and programs for you to get involved in. If program registration continues as it has, we encourage you to register early. It seems everything we offer is filling up. Also remember you can renew your membership beginning on October 1st. Do not delay and run the risk of missing out on the 2022 season. Deadline for membership is December 31st. Membership will be full again and we cannot guarantee your spot if you miss the deadline. On behalf of the Board of Directors and our staff, we want to thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us. Sincerely, Scott Brown, CPRP Executive Director 2 AUTUMN NEWSLETTER

In 2009, when we cleared the trees for the new parking lot behind the Bathhouse, we hired a wonderful woodworker with his own saw- mill. At first glance, the sawmill and its owner/operator looked like they had seen better days; rough, rutty, and homemade, he was a classic old school New Englander. But the weather-beaten façade hid a true gem. This older guy could work circles around those of us who were half his age and he produced beautiful four-inch- thick benches you see throughout camp and the back woods. Our next foray into using wood from the property was forced upon us during the 2011 Halloween storm that shut down Connecticut for over a week. Winding Trails lost over 1,000 trees during that storm. We salvaged all the usable oak and white pine and sent it up to Hinman’s Lumber yard in Burlington to process into usable wood. Nature’s Porch was built in 2013 with wood from this storm. But there is a back story. Mahmoud’s eyes lit up as he looked over the beach at Winding Trails and started to tell me stories of growing up on the beaches in Alexandria. Mahmoud grew up four blocks from the beach and spent most his free time there. Alexandria is a city full of high-rise apartments with an outer-ring road. On the water side of the road is a large, shaded colonnade for walking and sitting. Beyond the colonnade are beautiful soft white sand beaches with stone jetties jutting into warm, clear, turquoise water. TRAILS TALK DONORS CONTINUE TO GIVE! This past year has been extremely hard on everyone. Most nonprofits expressed concerns over how their donations would be affected due to the pandemic. One shining star amongst all the chaos, has been that overall donations for 2020 were up 2% over last year. Winding Trails was very fortunate to see our donations increase by 30% over last year. This year continues that trend with overall donations at the 9-month mark already ahead of 2020. As of July 1st, we have received 363 donations to our Trails Fund totaling $99,225. We were also able to raise $1,653 from our Acoustic Festival and $4,127 from Nature’s Open House last fall. This spring we received a record $17,733 from our Drive “fore” Campership Golf Tournament. Winding Trails has two endowment funds, one held and managed within the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving and our Board Designated Endowment Fund. This year we have had 25 donations made to these funds totaling $2,467. We also have the Colan Calahan Memorial Fund for campership. This fund has three donations totaling $3,000. In early summer, we began our efforts to raise funds to replace the playground at Dunning Lake. This playground is over 30 years old and in need of replacement. At the time of this printing we have received 54 donations totaling $8,463. If you recognize some of the names, please thank them for their additional support to conserving our environment, provid- ing opportunities for children to attend camp, and providing general organization support. We will share the yearly totals and how those monies will be used in our Winter Newsletter. Donors are listed as of July 13, 2021. LEADERSHIP CIRCLE: Mrs. Rober F.
