HORNSBY-KU-RING-GAI AND HILLS DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION INC. 21st Annual Match Showcase of Emerging Local Cricket Talent Sunday, 16th September 2018 – Rosewood Oval, Barker College RTC Captains – Oliver Jennings & Alistair Weston 2018-19
What is the Ross Turner Cup? The HK&HDCA Ross Turner Cup (RTC) was inaugurated in 1998-99 to provide an opportunity for our best U/15 players to appear in a ‘showcase’ game of high level representative cricket. The Cup is named in honour of Ross Turner (pictured left), one of our Association’s most famous products. As a young player, Ross was a brilliant all-rounder who bowled leg-spin, batted beautifully (left-handed) and was without peer in the field. He played for Pennant Hills CC, HK&HDCA rep. teams and later became a specialist batsman and Northern District’s most successful captain, winning two First Grade premierships. Ross worked for Cricket NSW and Cricket Australia, pioneering development activities, before continuing his magnificent contribution to cricket by working for the International Cricket Council (ICC) in the development of cricket in overseas countries such as Bangladesh, China, Malaysia, Afghanistan and India. He is now the Convenor of GPS cricket in Sydney. We are hopeful that Ross can join us today. The RTC and Glenn Hourigan Cup (GHC) matches were the brainchild of Tom Richmond OAM, who passed the responsibility after 12 years of sterling service to Bruce Wood, President of the Coaches’ Association (HKHDCCA) in 2010-11, who has maintained the fine tradition and introduced some new initiatives, including appointing some impressive young RTC and GHC coaches, and organising annual GHC T20 matches. Graduates from Ross Turner Cup to First Grade The organisers of the annual U/15 Ross Turner Cup match are proud that 29 players have graduated to play First Grade cricket in Sydney, as follows: • Greg Marks • David Lowery • Daniel Anderson • Michael Friedrich • James Kerr • James Shepherd • Matthew Code • Scott Copperfield • Anjan Oberai • David Ball • Neil Kimberley • Daniel Nicotra • Kieran Lahey • Shaun Eaton • Clayton Waters • Scott Rodgie • Chris Thorburn • Justin Rodgie • Matthew Phillips • Guy Seymour • Connor Jackson • Timm van der Gugten • Lachlan Ford • John Anderson • Jon Whealing • Matthew Taylor • Josh Miller • Robert Watts • Ben Phillips Thornleigh Cricket Club A feature of today’s RTC match is the fact that Thornleigh C.C. has four representatives, including both captains, Alistair Weston and Oliver Jennings (see cover photo). The Thornleigh Club has had a remarkable resurgence in recent years, thanks mostly to the efforts of Mrs Carolyn Ball and Mrs Veryan McAllister. After a lean period, the Club now has a solid representation of boys and girls teams in the HK&HDCA Junior Competitions. In the 1970s and 1980s, taking advantage of the growth in the Westleigh area, the Club regularly entered over ten junior teams each season and won many premierships which included four in the U/16 competition. This naturally led to a growth in the number of senior players and regular teams in the A and A Reserve Grade competitions. Thornleigh Cricket Club was actually formed in August 1894 and celebrates its 125th anniversary this season. It is the longest- standing affiliate of the HK&HDCA, having entered teams every season since 1929-30. It has won the A Grade competition seven times since WWII, including four years in succession in the late 1950s. It is very much to be hoped that this revival of the junior division will produce many representative players and a strong follow-on to the senior division of the Club. Teams for today’s contest Today’s Ross Turner Cup match is shaping as another high standard contest with two strong teams, roughly representing the East and West sides of our Association. The players have been selected from the HK&HDCA 2018-19 Weblin Shield, Moore Shield and U/15 IDCA teams. The cover photo shows Oliver Jennings (West captain) and Alistair Weston (East captain) holding the historic Ross Turner Cup. Experienced umpires, Bruce Wood and Simon Moore, have been appointed to officiate this 21st RTC match today at Rosewood Oval, Barker College. The Coaches’ Association has appointed two emerging young coaches to take charge of this year’s RTC teams – Aaron Crofts and Andrew Harvey. Unfortunately, this year the RTC and GHC matches will not be played on adjacent ovals, with the GHC taking place at Karuah Park, Turramurra. The Coaches’ Association is partnering Northern District CC on another amazing U/15 overseas tour in April 2019. A number of RTC players in action today will be selected for this once-in-a-lifetime Indian cricket tour, led by Rod Hokin, Bruce Wood and Josh Miller.
