BLYC Dock Talk 2021 Welcome to the 2021 boating season. This year commemorates fifty years of the Bear Lake Yacht Club. While so much has changed at Bear Lake during that time, so much remains the same. Looking forward to the summer ahead! A Word from Our 2021 Officers: Commodore – Kraig Raines “Samurai Run” Hi all! I am looking forward to this year, working with the club leadership to push the BLYC agenda forward. There is quiet optimism that this summer may actually be approaching normal. We may actually get to gather in groups, praise be. Cindy Adams and Lisa Thompson have put together a strong schedule of events. Ben has put together a racing schedule that will provide adequate opportunity to test skills against other like-minded racers. This marks the 50th year of the BLYC. We are putting together a weekend of activities to look back at those people who have helped make it all possible for us today. I look forward to this summer, it should be great. Thanks to all who have contributed time and energy. It wouldn’t happen without you. Kraig & Tami Raines BLYC Dock Talk 2021 1
BLYC Dock Talk 2021 Vice Commodore – Mark Thompson “Segundo Amor” Hello, Looking forward to another awesome summer at Bear Lake!! I am especially excited about getting outside and visiting with people in person. This should be a great year being a part of the Yacht Club with all of the socials and the 50th year anniversary party. Not to mention a great race schedule. Lisa and I have been members of the YC for around 11 years now and feel that we are all family. I will be moving slips this year and will welcome a friendly wave from everyone at the end of the dock! See you soon. Mark Thompson BLYC Dock Talk 2021 2
BLYC Dock Talk 2021 Secretary/Treasurer – Sean Branigan “Shenanigans” Death, taxes, and Sean as the BLYC Secretary/Treasurer; things you can count on. In all honesty, I am looking forward to the upcoming 2021 boating season and celebrating 50 years of the Bear Lake Yacht Club. A couple of important reminders: Membership renewals are due March 31 st. On the BLYC website you will find the membership application form that needs to be submitted along with your dues. Just like last year, we have two options for renewing your membership. You can print the form, fill it out, and mail it to me or you can utilize the online application form on the website. There are also two options to pay for your membership. You can mail me a check as in years previous. We have also have the Venmo account for the BLYC under the name BLYC-Events and will be accepting payments via this method as well. We are going to distribute cards at the first party for those that submit their membership dues and application on time. If you have a necessary requirement to get your card early, please indicate so on the membership form or email me at blycevents@gmail.com and I will do my best to accommodate and mail those cards out. Please send all mailings to the below address: Bear Lake Yacht Club Attn: Sean Branigan 2144 East 2700 South Salt Lake City, UT 84109 Thanks, and looking forward to a great summer ahead. – Sean BLYC Dock Talk 2021 3
BLYC Dock Talk 2021 Social Chair – Cindy Adams Ahoy Mates! Welcome to the BLYC 50th anniversary year! As your Social Chair again this year, I can assure you that we have some fun events planned as we hope to pull them all off! I look so forward to getting back on the dock and seeing all of your smiling faces. The officers and I have some great ideas as we need to make up for lost time from 2020. We will have great food, live music, a 50th anniversary celebration with a trip down memory lane, and a fun race schedule, just to name a few! The schedule is included in this newsletter below. I will be reaching out to all of you soon to see if you would be interested in helping host or just volunteer your time for one of the events. You can find me on CU North most weekends, or just give me a call on my cell at 801-865-5602 or email me at sinder007@aol.com with any questions, concerns, or ideas! Best, Cindy Adams BLYC Dock Talk 2021 4
BLYC Dock Talk 2021 Race Chair – Ben Towery “Little Wing” I am so excited to chair the race committee once again for 2021! We had some challenges in 2020 but we overcame and did so with great growth. We welcomed many new boats and crews to the yacht club and we have several more new boats interested in racing this year. This will be my 8th season of sailing at Bear Lake and I hope it to be the best yet. I crewed for the Steffen’s from 2005-2007 and this will be my 5th season with my own boat, the mighty Capri 25 Little Wing. I love Bear Lake! I’ve raced my bike around it, swam across it and love to sail my boat on it. My goals for racing always start with FUN! I want racing to be accessible and as worthwhile as it can be for everyone. With the events planned for this year, we are trying to continue managing the expectations and goals for all involved. With growth comes challenges and opportunities. We’ll continue to introduce new sailors to racing and get others who haven’t raced in a while to come back out while keeping the energy alive for the racing regulars. Above all, sailboat racing is a social activity and the people we have involved with BLYC are some of the best people I know. You will most often find me accompanied at the lake by my wonderful wife Ericka who loves to sail and our 12 year old daughter Mia loves to come up too. When I’m not sailing, I’m skiing in the winter, riding my mountain bike, working on our old house and always tweaking Little Wing. I can’t wait for summer! Ben BLYC Dock Talk 2021 5
BLYC Dock Talk 2021 Power Boat Chair – VACANT Our wonderful elected powerboat chair, Robert Chandler, had to step down from the position for personal reasons. We are looking for any volunteers that would be willing to fill this position this coming summer as we would love to host some events for the power boaters (or any and all boaters that wants to participate regardless of motor size). Please email blycevents@gmail.com if you would be willing to step in as powerboat chair this summer. Past Commodore – Justin Lee “Kneedeep” OK…so 50 years ago, I was 9 years old & some “folks I knew” decided to start a yacht club. We’ve come a long ways since that meeting in Logan Canyon! I’m sad to have learned that our Past Commodore, “Sailor Frank” and his better half have permanently moved to warmer climates. It will be sad to not have them welcoming people into the marina from their perch on the end of the dock. We will miss them & hope they come up for a visit this summer. I have been asked to “fill his shoes” this year and since I have some experience at this job…I guess I’ll do it. I have also heard that we do not have a Powerboat Chairman, so if anyone wants the job…we’re looking for volunteers! It sounds like the officers have met and put together a tentative schedule for this upcoming summer and we are hoping for better things to come. Let’s all work together to keep a great thing going and hope to see you all soon at the lake! Justin Lee BLYC Dock Talk 2021 6
