HEATHSIDE WALTON-ON-THAMES SCHOOL Please take part in our consultation Heathside Walton-on-Thames School was given approval to open as a Free School in Walton-on-Thames in 2018. The proposed opening date is September 2022. Before the school can sign a Funding Agreement with the Department of Education, the Trust has a statutory obligation to formally consult with interested local parties. There is a questionnaire available via this link to enable you to tell us what you think. More details are available about all the areas covered in this document on the Heathside Walton-on-Thames School website www.heathsidewalton.org. This consultation is set out under Section 10 of the Academies Act 2010. We are pleased to be able to start this consultation now as it is a required element in getting the funding agreement signed which will enable the Trust to open Heathside Walton-on-Thames School in September 2022. The consultation will run for a period of 6 weeks starting on Monday 13th September 2021 and running until Sunday 24th October 2021. Please feel free to share this link with other members of the local community. The school will be part of the ElmWey Learning Trust along with Heathside School, Weybridge. Heathside Walton-on-Thames School is proposed as a new 6 form of entry secondary school for pupils aged 11-16. It will have a total of 900 students when full (from academic year 2027-28). When the school opens in September 2022 it will have a smaller intake of 120 students (4 forms of entry). It is proposed the school will open in temporary buildings on the permanent site with the new school being ready for occupation from September 2023. The school will be a non-selective, mixed school and will meet a basic need for additional secondary places in the Borough which cannot be met by the existing provision. The school will be funded by the Department for Education. The consultation will close on Sunday 24th October and a report of our findings will be submitted to the Secretary of State. The report will be available on the school’s website. To take part in this consultation please click here for a link to the online survey. Vision The ElmWey vision is to create a family of schools committed to excellence, continuous improvement and innovation in all we do. Where all students are: • inspired to learn and develop as rounded individuals able to play a positive role in society; • encouraged to aim high and know they are valued, regardless of ability or background; • enabled to take advantage of exceptional opportunities to fulfil their potential within the school and beyond. Where all staff and Trustees are: • inspired to want the best for our pupils and schools within the Trust; • encouraged to be innovative, collaborative and inspirational; • enabled to develop themselves and deliver exceptional outcomes. We believe • all pupils deserve an inspiring education which enables them to reach their full potential; • that working together, to share best practice, results in better outcomes; • in creating an exciting learning environment where pupils are safe and supported and staff are brave enough to innovate in the classroom; • in investing in staff to develop and enjoy a fulfilling career in our community of schools; • all members of our community are important, whether pupils, staff, family or friends and all have something valuable to offer where relationships are underpinned by integrity and a clear sense of accountability. We aspire to being a model among trusts in all aspects of education, leadership, people development and governance. Curriculum The curriculum will be broad and carefully sequenced in each subject in order to build on students’ prior learning and enable them to acquire the knowledge and skills which will help them to make excellent progress. We are seeking to replicate the ethos, standards and performance of Heathside Weybridge. As a result, the curriculum in the new school will closely match that in place at Heathside with some adjustments to cater for known and likely differences between the intake profiles of the two schools. The aspiration is to enable access to a wide range of careers, whilst also developing the breadth of students’ knowledge. At Key Stage 4 this will include vocational courses in order to allow students rapid transition to certain career paths and match the needs and aspirations of the likely intake. A key feature of our curriculum is that we will use, for both KS3 and KS4, the same specifications, external assessments (i.e. examination boards) and schemes of work at both schools. This replication will utilise existing experience and knowledge at Heathside Weybridge, enabling the effective comparative tracking of the two establishments and provide enhanced CPD through joint provision. Syllabus matching will also provide comprehensive curriculum support for the new school, utilising existing schemes of work. When established this will also allow for moderation and standardisation with sharing of training and good practice across the MAT. Following the same specifications will be particularly important during Heathside Walton’s growth phase when staffing numbers will be relatively small and the need for support will be higher. Admissions Heathside Walton-on-Thames School will be a mixed non-selective school, open to all students. Its planned admissions number in September 2022 will be 120, increasing to 180 students each year from September 2023. Where the school is oversubscribed, places will be allocated in accordance with the oversubscription criteria listed in the admissions arrangements. In line with the government’s Code of Practice for Admissions, children with an Education, Health and Care Plan naming the school, will be allocated a place first. Priority for admission will then be given to ‘Looked After Children’ and ‘Previously Looked After Children, children of staff recruited to fill a skill- shortage area. The remaining places will be split with 50% allocated to applicants whose permanent home address is within 0.5 miles of the nodal point in Molesey (front gate of Chandlers Field School) and the remaining 50% will be allocated on permanent home to school distance from the front main entrance of Heathside Walton-on-Thames school.
