It is important to check with your provider to see if you can add an international phone plan. Another option would be to buy a SIM card (usually sold at airports or stores) and buy a Greek phone plan. WhatApp is a popular international communica- tion service that uses wifi and cell service to connect with people and businesses and is a great idea to download on your phone prior to the trip. All of the hotels that we will be staying at will have wifi although you may need to pay an additional fee to activate your wifi service in your room. Europe uses different electrical plugs than the US and uses a different voltage. This can be solved with an adapter that can be ordered online or bought at an electronics store or bigger superstores. Many computers and electrical devices are designed to be used over a variety of different voltages but it is recommended that you check your device so it does not get ruined. Cultural insights Being in a different part of the world means that things are different than here. In Greece the main language is Greek but many businesses and people also speak English. It is polite to greet them and try to speak a bit of their language to them. You may earn some bonus points with them, although it’s not required. Greece is 7 hours ahead of eastern time. Average temperatures in June for Athens are a high of 85 low of 65. Crete is a bit cooler with a high of 65 and low of 48. The currency in Greece is the Euro. You can exchange money in a number of different ways. The easiest way would be to exchange your money in the airport which tends to have a good exchange rate. Banks in Greece and money exchanging businesses in the US will also exchange money but usually at a higher rate. Other insights Unfortunately, always something to consider is theft. Athens and Crete being populated and popular tourist destinations does see its share of theft. It is recommended that you don’t carry all of your cash on you at once. Being mindful and conscious of this will help you greatly. It’s recommended that you leave valuables and travel documents in the safe in the hotel room. Another great thing to consider is travel insurance. There are many different options to choose from.
