The 69th annual Communion Breakast will honor merit award recipients Tom Ashdown ’62 and Dr. John Bastulli ’72 (see their full bios in the 2020 Spring Alumnotes). PRESIDENT’S LETTER A Difficult Year for All of Us As you are all aware, this has been a difficult year for many organizations and our alumni organization is no exception. Our annual Communion Breakfast and Man of the Year Award ceremony, normally held in April, was cancelled. The annual June alumni meeting was also cancelled as were many luncheons and reunions. The golf outing was postponed to September of 2020 and was limited to only 88 golfers. Even though the attendance was limited, our sponsors and raffle netted a higher than expected revenue. The Hall of Fame Ceremony was held remotely via Zoom. Our thanks goes out to the NDCL staff responsible for putting the remote event together. The 1958 Football Team (the last team to win the Cleveland City Championship) and Steve Pekarcik ’63, a basketball stalwart on our ’62 – ’63 team, were honored. There is a YouTube video available for viewing. Please contact Keven Krajnak at NDCL for the link to that video. Looking forward to 2021, we needed to postpone several events but are still looking forward to holding our annual golf outing at Grantwood on September 10 and our Communion Breakfast/Man of the Year on October 3. Our annual Trustee dinner meeting is still scheduled for June 14 but will likely be cancelled and replaced by an online Zoom Trustee meeting. Despite all of these difficulties, our dues collections have been strong and we want to thank you all for your generous commitment to the alumni organization. We also want to thank Sue Wise for the superb effort she has put in this year, as always, to keep our alumni office running smoothly. Joe Nista ’64, President Latin Lions Twitter Account We would like to note that the Twitter account “Latin Lions” is not an official account for the Cathedral Latin Alumni Association. The person handling this account does not want to reveal himself or his connection to us. He pointed out that he does this as a service – not for profit or credit. 2
Nancy Hlad Noltkamper – A Lion to Remember In 1990, looking forward to NDCL’s first varsity football season, Donna Hlad fashioned a lion mascot costume so that daughter Nancy ’91 could cheer on the new team. Nancy prowled the sidelines during that season, but NDCL soon produced its own mascot, and so the Latin alumni adopted Nancy and her costume as their own. The lion’s crown was altered to feature purple pinstriping and an old “LATIN LIONS” button. Soon after, Nancy was invited to appear in costume at the St Patrick’s Day parades, marching with the Cathedral Latin Alumni just ahead of the NDCL Band. A student favorite of Development Director Pete Pucher ’55 and an East 55th Marina boating buddy of Dominic LoGalbo ’50, Nancy would ride in the jalopy with Brother Frank Nurthen, walk alongside the CL Alumni banner, and shake hands or dance with excited children who left their parents on the curbs of Euclid Avenue. She would march in that parade with the Men of Latin 26 times. In her teens, Nancy honed her skill at the button box accordion, recording several Slovenian polka albums. Now thirty years after NDCL, she lives with husband Eric Noltkamper in Bainbridge. The couple has been the featured entertainment at the Hofbrau Haus for several years. Nancy, a graduate of Cleveland State, is an IT security analyst at Progressive Insurance, where she has worked for over 24 years. She is shown here on ESPN, performing at the Hofbrau during the Cavs’ run to the 2016 NBA Championship. Communion Breakfast (cont’d from page 1) year, we are going to honor both classes. NDCL Installs New Championship Wall Beginning with the Legacy Wall installation in 2019, NDCL has made efforts to refresh and update the athletic space honoring our legacy schools to welcome home our alumni Dr. Adolph and to inspire our current and future students. This Znidarsic ’45 – summer, the McGarry Gym was improved with fresh paint, a new sound Trophy Awarded system and a new championship wall. 77 Years Later “The new championship wall in the McGarry Gym While searching through old Latin makes an immediate trophies, Sue Wise came across one statement to guests as from 1944 which read 1944 Indoor Meet, they walk in,” says Keven Met. Alberto’s Relish Albert Habinak, a 1948 Cathedral Latin graduate and a veteran of the Korean War, spent most of his career traveling. After he retired he missed some his favorite foods that he experienced while dining across the country. Although not a cook, he set out to recreate some of those flavors. He mastered an amazing sweet jalapeno relish. Since he was not a chef it never occurred to him to add salt, yet his relish is bursting with flavor. His favorite condiment, Alberto’s Sweet Jalapeno Relish with no sodium became a healthier option and is delicious on eggs, hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, tuna, chili and on tortilla chips. After perfecting the recipe he would say, “It’s so good I know I can sell it.” And he was right. His wife, Sarah, a retired school teacher, was convinced it would not sell, yet booked Al in a craft show where he sold out and had customers calling wanting more. Al ’48 & Susan Habinak “Sweet and tangy but not hot” perfectly describes the original sweet jalapeno relish which is now zero heat. Since they are not an official parish and presently do not have a full-time priest, they have a visiting priest (usually from University of Dayton) for Saturday and Sunday masses. Former Latin teachers Fr. Ted Cassidy and Fr. Chris Conlon (dec’d) have celebrated masses in the past. Recently, Fr. Tonry celebrated Mass and Bob says he hasn’t changed a bit and still has his Irish wit and charm. In his sermon, Fr. Pat made it a point to include the 1962 class in his sermon. He referred to his past students as “life changers” for each other, but especially for him. 6
