In the summer of 2014, he traveled back home to Afghanistan for the first time since he came to America in 2010. There he started an internship with the nonprofit organization Welfare Association for the Development of Afghanistan (WADAN). In Afghan villages, girls are not al- lowed to go to school, and women do not have the same rights as men. To help these women and girls, Daud co-directed a project that brought the village elders to the provincial capital to educate them about women’s rights as well as the importance of educating girls. To educate the village elders, Daud’s project inte- grated religion into the workshops about women’s rights. Daud selected verses from the Quran and used the Prophet’s message of equality and the importance of education to show the elders that the education of women and girls is not in conflict with their religion. Case Western Reserve 5 Several Xi Deuteron brothers attended membership development and recruitment workshops with Director of Growth Colin Treanor and Field Secretary Jack O'Neill during the fall 2016 semester. The training was a huge success, allowing the Chapter to recruit 16 pledges during their fall recruitment. On November 19, 2016, Xi Deuteron hosted their fall philanthropy event, Fry Gamma Delta. ON CAMPUS Charleston Columbia On September 25, 2016, Lambda Chi conducted a neigh- borhood sweep. Clemson 6 During the week of Valentine's Day, brothers partnered with the women of Alpha Chi Omega for Healthy Relation- ship Week. The week consisted of tabling and sponsoring events, including Promo Night and Pie an Alpha Chi. 5 This year, the Omega Chapter was asked to contribute to the Charity Gala, a premier, white-tie charity event that has been hosted in New York City for the past 62 years. The Chapter participated in the opening ceremonial dance and donated $2,000 to the Charity Gala, which benefits the Jewish Museum in Vienna. The Chapter, partnered with the women of Pi Beta Phi and the men of Beta Theta Pi, were top ranked in the Greek life category. ON CAMPUS Florida Florida International During the fall 2016 semester, Sigma Phi raised over $3,500 by hosting their annual haunted house event. Additionally, the Chapter invited all brothers and family members to a holiday dinner on campus in December. Josh Beckles (2020) was crowned Tri Sigma Sorority's Captain of the Seas at a pageant that benefits the March of Dimes Foundation. Georgia After the holidays, Kappa Deuteron hosted a clothing drive and donated five industrial sized trash bags full of clothes to Project Safe's Thrift Store. The Chapter also sponsored a hole for this event. 5 Phi Sigma welcomed 32 men to their fall pledge class, and 26 of these men were initiated in November. On November 15, 2016, Jack Grenuk (2017) was awarded IFC President of the Year at the IFC Banquet. Norman Tabora (2020) was elected to FSU's SGA Senate. ON CAMPUS Georgia Tech 5 Gamma Tau teamed up with Kappa Deuteron at Georgia to run the GT and UGA game ball from Atlanta to Athens for their annual Run for the Kids philanthropy event. The Chapter raised over $10,000 for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Gamma Tau initiated 18 brothers in fall 2016 and welcomed 6 new pledges in the spring. The proceeds from the event also helped to sponsor Camp Arifan's "United Through Reading" program. In October 2016, the Chapter created a partner- ship with several local organizations to develop "Beyond the Color: Illuminating the Voices of the Survivors" in recognition of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The event was de- signed to increase awareness around the topic of domestic violence. The Chapter will continue the campaign through social media. 4 THE PHI GAMMA DELTA 13
ON CAMPUS Hanover Idaho Connor DeLong (2017) established an annual golf tournament, which is sponsored by his chapter. The tourna- ment was developed to raise funds for Idaho 2 Fly, a non-profit that supports men with cancer. Connor picked this organization because his father, who passed away from esophageal cancer, had participated in one of Idaho 2 Fly's weekend fishing retreats. By the end of the event, the groups raised a total of $6,000. 5 On March 4, the Chapter hosted the Out of the Darkness Walk to raise awareness and funds for the American Foun- dation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). 308 people participated in the three-mile walk, which started with two people speaking about suicide prevention and ended with a BBQ lunch. As of March 8, the Chapter raised over $16,000 for AFSP, and donations are open until June 30. Following the event, the local fire department used the car to practice a jaws of life extraction. The fire department was grateful for the training opportunity, so they decided to make a donation to the Make A Wish Foundation as well. ON CAMPUS Western Kentucky On October 1, 2016, Chi Eta held their fifth annual Purple Run 5K, which raises money and awareness for the Alzheimer's Association. Dozens of people participated in the race, and the Chapter raised approximately $2,500. Jeremy Latham (2020), whose grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, placed first for the men's division of the race. Noah Stevens (2019) was one of 34 students nationwide selected to receive the U.S. Foreign Service Internship by the Department of State. This position is a paid, two-summer internship and is one of the most competitive opportunities for students in the State Department. This summer, the internship takes place in Washington, DC, where Noah will work and receive diplomatic training in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs in the Office of Press and Public Diplomacy for Iraq. In the summer of 2018, Noah will work in a U.S. Embassy abroad, likely in the Middle East. Western Michigan 5 During the Order of Omega Standards of Excellence awards, Kappa Mu received several awards, including the highest new member GPA, the most community service hours per member, and a four-star rating. Thye Fischman (2017) won Greek Man of the Year, and former Chapter President Shaen Hawkins (2016) won President of the Year. The Chapter hosted their second annual Helping for the Holidays Week on November 28 - December 2, 2016. The week- long event consisted of a donation race, trivia, Reindeer Games and a week-long toy and food drive, which benefited three local families the Chapter adopted. Additionally, the Chapter was #1 in grades for the fall 2016 semester with a 3.21 GPA, and they logged 1,663 service hours, which was the most out of all fraternities.
