seek, share, rejoice - pastor's letter... Dear Parishioners, “Go therefore, and make disciples of all the nations” This weekend the Church observes the Feast of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. In these weeks following Pentecost, the Church celebrates several festivals. The Feast of the Holy Trinity can get lost in the abstractions of theological discourse. I have always found inspiration in the insight that the Trinity celebrates relationship. The Father, the Son and the Spirit in an eternal relationship bonded in love. The Trinity reveals the power of our relationship to God and to one another. This profound sense of relationship emboldens the Church as it accepts the mandate of this week’s Gospel to make disciples of all the nations. We see our faith as deeply connected to Christ and sustained by the community of believers. Jerry Boland, Pastor As a parish we must build relationships among ourselves as we continue our faith journey. Our journey is not a solitary pilgrimage, but one done in communion with others. There is much energy these days around the process of “reopening”. Among other things the reopening phase will be a time of healing and rebuilding our faith community that has been so challenged by COVID. The process of reopening will be as complicated as the shutting down phase. There are many considerations that make the simplest decisions far from it. We are moving in the right direction! Each week the metrics suggest we are turning the corner on the pandemic. We follow the protocols of the Cardinal’s COVID Task Force. The Task Force takes direction from the Illinois Department of Health. It can be confusing and downright frustrating when we experience vastly different practices from masks to social distancing. While churches invite people into interior spaces unlike restaurants and grocery stores, we have different sensibilities regarding inclusion. On June 1, we will be implementing several changes considering these recommendations. Our Parish Office will be open to conduct business. We can have in person meetings that respect 60% occupancy. Our masses will have larger congregations. We can now seat people in every other row instead of every third row. We will go from six feet to three feet social distancing. We can expand music ministry and be able to take up a collection(yeah!). We still must observe precautions. While 50% of adults in the State of Illinois have had at least one vaccination, 50% have not. No children under the age of 12 have been vaccinated. We have several parishioners that cannot be vaccinated because of health considerations. We need to be sensitive to these realities. The Archdiocese prefers that we maintain the current protocols until a larger percentage of people are vaccinated. We could choose an option that requires that people present their vaccination cards to be validated by the greeter. Most of our greeters are not comfortable making this kind of request. There are also those who are not comfortable being in a church where they do not feel safe with unmasked people. A couple of things, one is patience, I am (cont. on page 3) May God Bless our military personnel who have died in the performance of their military duties while serving in the United States Armed Forces The Three Soldiers by Frederick Hart, part of the Vietnam War Memorial on the National Mall 2 May 30, 2021 • olphglenview.org

seek, share, rejoice - praying for our priests Praying For Priests “The pandemic has been hard on everyone, but I think we continue to underestimate its toll on priests. I got a message from a priest friend in another diocese that said three priests under five years ordained have left ministry this year. Pray for priests. Pray for young priests,” writes Fr. Andrew Hart of the Archdiocese of Little Rock. Fr. Hart continues, “I think the most common thing we priests need is what everyone needs: prayers, an occasional word of thanks, patience, and understanding if we’re off our game a little, perhaps encouragement or concern if it seems like we’re struggling.” As Mass attendance restrictions are gradually lifted, priests will return to schedules that can be very hectic. Not only will their sacramental duties increase, but so will contact with parishioners, many of whom have various needs. Some extra time spent with priests after Mass, offering gratitude for their ministry can be a highlight of an otherwise taxing week. A note complimenting father’s homily makes his effort of writing and preaching more joyful. “It is, of course, exactly what we signed up for, and a great joy most days, but there are difficult ones too, and some men are hurting and struggling, perhaps even without realizing it,” writes Fr. Hart. For a priest, whose life is dedicated to prayer, mentioning that We love our priests! (l to r) Fr. Jim Barrett, Fr. Larry Basbas, our Pastor Fr. Jerry Boland, and Fr. Patrick Kizza you are personally praying for him is deeply appreciated. “The thing priests need most is that when times are tough they draw closer to the Lord. Primarily that means being men of prayer and deep spirituality,” notes Fr. Bill Dailey, CSC. When parishioners let their priests know that they accompany them spiritually in prayer – and not just at Mass, but throughout the day – it is a great consolation and gives them strength to persevere. Fr. Phil Cioffi, Orat., who died suddenly in 2019 after giving 38 years of his life to the people of the Archdiocese of Chicago, always included the following quotation from St. John Henry Newman on his anniversary-of-ordination cards. Perhaps in reflecting on Newman’s words we can know better how to spiritually accompany our priests in all they do for the people of the parish. “God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission. I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good; I shall do His work. I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it if I do but keep His commandments. Therefore, I will trust Him, whatever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him, in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him. If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He knows what He is about. He may take away my friends. He may throw me among strangers. He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink, hide my future from me. Still, He knows what He is about.” — submitted by parishioner Mark Mitchell Save The Date: October 2, 2021 Father Jeremiah Boland's 40th Anniversary of Ordination Celebration May 13, 2021 was Father Jeremiah Boland's 40th Anniversary of Ordination.
