MISSION: The Manchester Parks & Recreation Department strives to offer programs and services that help to enhance quality of life through parks and exceptional recreation opportunities. We provide opportunities for all residents to live, grow and develop into healthy, contributing members of our community. Whatever your age, ability or interest we have something for you! REGISTRATION INFORMATION • All programs are offered on a “first come – first served” basis via online registration through our website www.mbtsrec.com, mail in registration or in person at the Parks & Recreation office. • All programs operate on a self-supporting basis. The Parks & Recreation Department reserves the right to cancel classes that do not support themselves. • Checks should be made payable to: MANCHESTER PARKS & RECREATION. Registrations should be mailed to: Manchester Parks & Recreation, 10 Central Street, Manchester, MA 01944, or dropped off in Room #9 at Town Hall. You can also register for programs online using your checking account (lowest cost) or with a credit or debit card at www.mbtsrec.com • There is a $25.00 service fee for all returned checks. • Non-residents are allowed to sign up for any Manchester Recreation Department program. • If schools are closed due to inclement weather, then all recreation programs for that day are also cancelled. On weekends or in the summer months, if the weather is questionable, please call the Parks & Recreation Department Weather Information/Cancellation Line at 978-525-6429 and the status of the activity will be posted. Generally, the status of the program will be posted 1 hour prior to the start of the program. Also, please check the Facebook pages for up to date information. • Confirmation of your program will NOT be made. You will only be notified if the class is full or is cancelled due to low enrollment. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend your program at the first meeting. • Our online registration system allows you to create a family account. By creating a family account, you will only have to fill out your family information one time. Then for all future registrations you would simply select the appropriate family members name from the drop down menu. • The second benefit of creating your own family account is that you have the ability to login to your account and see what programs you are currently registered for and if you have any outstanding balances or have a credit on file with the Department. SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE: A confidential application can be made to the Director of Parks & Recreation and if it is determined that a hardship exists, the applicant may be granted a reduction in fee. All programs operate on a self-supporting basis, which limits the amount of available aid that we can provide, financial assistance is only available for programs run directly by Parks & Recreation Department staff such as Hornets After School Program, Winter Basketball, Tennis Lessons & Summer Playground. Financial assistance is not available for programs where we hire contractors to run the program, unless it is approved by the instructor. Please call 978-526-2019 to request an application. PHOTO & VIDEO POLICY: The Manchester Parks & Recreation Department reserves the right to photograph facility, activity and program participants at any and all department sponsored events for potential future use. All photos will remain the property of the Manchester Parks & Recreation Department and may be used in future program guides, brochures, pamphlets news releases and Facebook for promotional purposes or in recognition of department sponsored events. If you do not wish to have your picture taken, please notify a member of the staff prior to the event.
The Parks & Recreation Committee serves as the sole advisory group to the Board of Selectmen on matters related to Parks & Recreation programs, services, and facilities. This Committee meets on a monthly basis. It can seat a maximum of 125 people and is used for picnics, reunions, birthday parties, etc. There are no cooking facilities available. The Rotunda is a gathering spot used for short wedding ceremonies, prom pictures, etc. and is open to the public. A reservation form and full payment is required to reserve the chowder house. All caterer information must be received in full 30 days before the scheduled date, or the date may be forfeited. Reservation forms are available at Manchester Town Hall and online at: www.manchester.ma.us/recreation. 2021 RESIDENT RATES: Monday - Thursday $250.00 Friday - Sundays $300.00 2021 NON–RESIDENT RATES: Monday - Thursday $575.00 Friday - Sundays $675.00 Crowell Chapel is a small gothic looking stone structure located at 4 Rosedale Avenue in Manchester, Massachusetts. Commissioned to be built by Susan Crowell in memory of her brother Benjamin Franklin Crowell in 1903, the chapel is one of Manchester’s hidden jewels. The chapel is available to rent on a first come first served basis and any interested party should contact Manchester Parks & Recreation at 978-526-2019. Reservation forms are also available online at: www.manchester.ma.us/recreation. The chapel capacity is 140 people. Multi Sports with Viking Sports (Ages 3-5)- For our Multi-Sports Camps we introduce a variety of sports games and activities including dodgeball, capture the flag, tag, soccer, and floor hockey. Our games are simple to learn and really fun to play. We like to introduce kids to games that they in turn can bring home and play with their friends. This approach allows kids to focus more on playing and having fun versus listening to a laundry list of rules and watching elaborate set ups. All Viking Sports Camps conclude with our famous Tournament Day. Soccer powered by the New England Revolution & Viking Sports (Ages 3-5)- Viking’s soccer clinics are powered by the New England Revolution! Working with the Revs Viking Sports has created a soccer curriculum that blends our brand of fun and the Revolution’s skill devel- opment expertise. During the season we teach tomorrow’s emerging stars age appropriate skills that develop dribbling passing receiving and shooting. Your child’s early exposure to the sport should give them an edge up on the competition. All players receive a Viking Sports T-shirt! The instructor led class is filled with fun games and role playing exercises. Students will learn safety skills, child care skills, First Aid and rescue skills, life and business skills. Butts and Bellies @ Singing Beach with the FIT HOUSE-Save your spot !! Butts and Bellies is hitting the beach this summer June 7-July 30, 2021. This class is designed to strengthen and develop your large muscle groups in an effort to help you lose fat. As your body changes so will your workouts!! Toning and sculpting will be added to the mix with a focus on abs, glutes and arms . Morning Practice- Based upon the principles of Hot Power Yoga, this class is primarily standing poses designed to increase strength, concentration and balance. Expect to hold the poses for 30-60 seconds while breathing deeply and connecting to the beauty of the sand, surf and sun. You will sweat, detox and purify your body, mind and spirit. Adult Beginner Tennis-The Manchester Parks and Recreation will once again be offering beginner tennis lessons this summer for adults. The class is geared towards new tennis players and lessons will be based upon participants. This class meets one time per week for 5 weeks. Tennis is a mental game, requiring players to think quickly and is a great work out. Do you want to learn how to play tennis in a non judgey envi- ronment? Then this is the class for you! This weekly program will feature pick-up scrimmage style games providing current and past players the opportunity to keep their skills fresh and get some needed exercise on a beautiful turf field in a fun and active atmosphere. Each participant must wear eye & mouth protec- tion as well as shin guards, please bring a stick. Who can play? Any player, 14+ from any town (must have at least two-years’ experience). The League aims to provide a fun, affordable field hockey experience re- gardless of skill level specifically directed towards the child that has never played or has little experi- ence. Our captains and coaches have designed a fun and active skills based program that introduc- es athletes to the game and provides additional skill development and field time for those who al- ready play the game. Jenny is attending Endicott College and studying Sport Lead- ership for her master’s degree, and wants to focus on growing the game throughout ME and the sur- rounding communities while also teaching the athletes how sports are not only for physical growth, but personal growth. Everyone is welcome. Field hockey is an all inclusive game, and there is no better time to learn than this Summer! It’s the perfect blend of fitness competition and fun that keeps everyone en- gaged. Viking created a variety of Ninja Warrior obstacles geared around agility strength and bal- ance. When put together they make a diverse Ninja Warrior course that kids love to go through. Ath- letes will find themselves leaping from the ascending plyo boxes bounding between quintuple steps and even scaling the wall located in our ENORMOUS obstacle bounce house! Every aspect of Vi- king’s Ninja Warrior is flat out fun. We will be working on many baseball skills that include hitting, pitching, throwing, outfield work, infield work, base-running, and many drills that allow younger players to develop. We will divide players by age and abil- ity during these drills. We will also have a 1/2 hour lunch. Tim St. Laurent Summer Basketball Clinic (Grades 1-9)-Join Manchester Essex High School Boys Varsity Basketball Coach Tim St. Laurent who will be running two summer basketball clinics from Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, June 21st to June 23rd AND August 16th to August 18th, at the outdoor courts at Sweeney Court (we are bringing in additional hoops). The clinic will be from 9am to noon each day. This clinic is for boys and girls in grades 1 through 9 (2021-22 School Year). The sessions will be fun drills that concentrate on dribbling, passing, shooting, proper foot- work, and defense. There will be games throughout the morning for all levels. The clinic will be run by the coaching staff, current, and former players of the high school team. Cost: $120 for each session; $200 if you sign up for both. Summer Pottery & Art Class with Ms. Brousseau (Grades 2-7) -Join Ms. Brousseau for the week of June 21st-June 24th, 9:00am-12:00pm at scenic Tuck’s Point, Chowder House. We will be working with clay, printmaking, painting, and creating batiks! This class will fo- cus on creating ocean art with clay fish, sailboat batiks, painting ocean colors, and printmaking. In this summer program we will work in groups to create a Lego movie set with Lego characters for a stop-motion movie, you'll storyboard, shoot and add voice-overs too. All supplies will be included and sanitize. All students must wear a facial mask. The created movie will be emailed one month after the class ends. This year we will be offering our Summer Playground Program by the week, for 7 weeks this summer. By offering this program by the week, we can monitor the size of the groups and work with the CDC guidelines to keep everyone safe while still offering this great summer program that we all love!!! All the favorites of Manchester Summer Playground will take place. We will play sports, gym games, board games, table games, water games, tournaments & competi- tions, Hat Day, STEM creations, annual 4th of July t-shirt creations, friend- ships bracelets and gimp. We will also have special guests that may include Curious Creatures, Knucklebones, Archery, Yoga, BMX Bikes and Magicians!!! We will also take local fields trips on Fridays to Singing Beach, Tuck's Point, Sweeney Park, White Beach and Agassiz Rock! Summertime Art Club will enjoy various beach inspired crafts at the Chowder House, Tuck’s Point. The students will enjoy making pop art underwater self portraits to funky painted rocks and wire photo holders. Together we will enjoy little science, a little sand and lots of art! Spend the morning roaming the trails, flipping rocks and logs, dipping into vernal pools, and exploring creeks for these amazing animals. We will learn about their varied lifecycles as well as what habitats they prefer. Participants should wear shoes/boots that can get wet and clothes that can get dirty. For summer 2021 he’s bringing his favorite guests outside to Manchester’s beautiful Masconomo Park. Joining Brian will be Boston Pops pianist Ben Cook, Alex MacDougall on drums and vocals, and Vinny Briguglio on bass. Sunday, July 4th Special Concert with the 4th of July Committee Compaq Big Band (6:00-8:00pm) Special night with a 20 piece big band with plenty of patriotic favorites! They have kept new England swinging since 1975 with all the old favorites. July 6th – Spike the Punch (6:00-8:00pm) Spike The Punch is a high energy rock band based out of Boston. The band formed by Jeff Fraser of Essex has been performing cover songs at the Boston area's top night clubs since November 2000 and is rocking the town as strong as ever playing live music from yesterday to today and leaving audiences wanting more! July 13th – East Coast Soul (6:00-8:00pm) East Coast Soul is a passionate collective of ensembles focused on bringing an unparalleled level of energy and style to your event. The Hornets After School Program will be back in the Fall 2021!!! The Hornet’s After School Pro- gram is a full time after school program that offers a safe, supportive alternative between school and home for the children of Manchester-by-the-Sea in grades K - 5. The Hornet’s after School Pro- gram is run by the Manchester Parks and Recreation Department. The staff of the Hornet’s After School Program are chosen carefully and must meet the strict requirements of the Massachusetts Department of Early Education & Care, who is our licensing body. Heather DePriest has run the Af- ter School Program since its inception in January 2007. Heather also serves as the Program Direc- tor for the Parks and Recreation Department. The program runs every school day from 3:00-6:00PM at the Manchester Memorial School. Parents have the option of sending their children anywhere from 1— 5 days per week. Tuition is paid month- ly of the first of each month for the previous month’s use. Please pack appropriate clothes because we will play outside as much as we can.
