Healey Exhaust Notes May 2019 President’s Letter by Don Margeson Greetings all and a 'Happy Spring’ to you, We are emerging from winter. I'd say that's a 'hooray'! Well, while yours truly does love winter and skiing, I'm ready for the driving season. Have had some work done by Bob Abbott on my Healey and soon will wash and buff it up, tidy up the interior, and get it ready for the road. Now that the salt has been sufficiently washed away by rain, I am back on the road. Expect your anticipating similarly. The AHC of NE held its annual Planning Meeting for the upcoming driving season. Thirty-three (33) of your fellow members came to the Wayside Inn in Sudbury, MA on Saturday, March 16th from 10am to noon. The purpose was to schedule the activities/events for our club, and other vintage and classic car events from March 2019 to February 2020. Peter Sturtevant, with computer at hand, used the meeting as a forum to openly discuss with attendees the schedule for the upcoming season of driving events (club and non-club). Also, Linda Hakala discussed financial status, and there was a briefing of Summit 2019 by Helen and Donald. As well, Linda keeps me informed of new members and there have been several thru March (near 10 or more) so we truly want to welcome all. We look forward to seeing you at club events. We have a great season of driving events in front of us. Let's applaud the Jamison's who drove down from Ottawa, Ontario to be at the meeting. They truly like our club's membership and the fun we have. They will be at Summit so please introduce yourself. Also want to mention Rich Ray who drove his Healey to the Planning Meeting. Well done Rich! You truly represent the spirit of the club. Speaking of Summit 2019, Linda advises that registrations are coming in now and we are off to a great start. If you have not registered yet for Summit 2019 – Healeys' at Winnipeasaukee, please go online to get your registration and send it to Linda. Forms have been included in the recent newsletter or online. The more the merrier. The itinerary of events is on the website and in the newsletter. Helen has also set up some wonderful events for the ladies this year also. We have a terrific venue for Summit 2019. Come, you will have fun. That's the news for the moment. We'll soon be able to rev up our cars and be on the road. Attend your local Wing events and go to local car shows. We all have a great car to be enjoyed, by those of us who own and drive a Healey, and those that like to see us on the road and at shows. See ya soon, Yours truly, See ya at the events 0.and on the road soon. Don Margeson Club Prez Healey Exhaust Notes Page 1 MAY 2019

Saturday august 17, 2019 brass era car collection open house 10:30 AM - Redding Road House, 406 Redding Rd.- REDDING, CT Dick King is a second-generation brass car collector and restorer, who lives in Redding, CT. He is opening his doors to the Austin Healey Club on August 17th, where we will see one of the most impressive collections of big horsepower Edwardian pre-1913 cars in the world. The collection includes treasured cars from his father, multiple Concours winners, and also reaches into super- charged Bugatti’s and Alfa Romeos from the mid to late 1920s. Set on a hillside in beautiful Redding, there is enough parking for both antique and modern cars. After the tour we will return to the Road House for lunch. The Brass Era is an American term for the early period of automotive manufacturing, named for the prominent brass fittings used during this time for such things as lights and radiators. It is generally considered to encompass 1896 through 1915, a time when these vehicles were often referred to as horseless carriages. Nuts & Bolts Corner Subjects covered during our May 2019 Technical Conference Call 1. BJ 8 Popping out of first gear This caller’s BJ 8 that on accelaration pops out of first gear. Is it possible to fix it without remov- ing the transmission. The caller was told to replace three little balls and three springs on top of transmission and that would fix the problem. ADVICE: Those little balls and springs are part of the system designed to keep you from popping the car into the wrong gear. Often it is the rubber shift boot that causes the gear to pop out. The newer boots are a bit stiffer and sometimes interfere with smooth shifting. Any misalignment in the boot could cause the car to pop out of gear. Remove the gear knob, remove the rubber boot and test drive. See if it still pops out of gear. Please keep the team posted on whether or not the ball/spring replacement works for you. 2. Quick Jack car lift This caller asked for feedback on the Quick Jack portable car lift he is considering purchasing. He is unable to fit a standard car lift in his garage ADVICE: It is important to check the height of the platform, since the Healey exhaust systems are hanging so low Make sure you lift your Healey along the frame Once the car is lifted, you can secure it in place with the locking supports There is a great review on the Garagejournal.com website. https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=253824&highlight=quick+jack Healey Exhaust Notes Page 22 MAY 2019

The Paul Russell Tour By Craig Hess The May 4th Wing 5 Paul Russell Tour organized by Craig Hess was a great success from several perspectives. The group size was limited to 30 and we had a full house, with 20 AHCNE members and 10 guests. The tour was led by Alex Finigan, Paul Russell's Sales Manager. Alex is the consummate car guy and has been with Paul Russell and Co. for more than 40 years. He spent his first decade as a restoration mechanic, and his extensive knowledge was evident during the tour, as he pointed out many details that would have otherwise been missed. There was an eclectic collection of museum quality classic cars (Ferrari (6+), Bugatti (2), Talbot Lago (2), Mercedes (6+), Rolls Royce (1)), in various stages of restoration and on consignment for sale. It was pointed out that the only restoration service they don't do is metal plating. Otherwise, all work is done in house. I am sure all who attended will be watching coverage of prestigious Concours events to see some of the cars that were in process. On another front, the attendees were very generous with their donations, and $1165 was raised for The Jimmy Fund (AHCNE's 2019 charity). Thanks to all who attended! Visit hosted by new members Ray and Marilyn Melanson By Bruce Newcomb On April 6, 2019, approximately 30 friends and acquaintances had the pleasure of being invited to the home of Ray & Marilyn Melanson. The focus of this gathering was to see the progress Ray had made on the restoration of his 1957 Austin Healey BN-4 over the past winter. While some of those in attendance were seeing this restoration for the first time, others like myself, had seen the project in earlier stages of restoration. One by one as we entered Ray’s workshop we were impressed by the quality and quantity of the work that Ray had accomplished. Ray gave a demonstration of how he had removed and cleaned each piece of hard ware (nuts and bolts), and then electroplated each piece with a tin-zinc plating. The end result showed the original factory part number of each piece… very impressive! After a period of time, looking and appreciating the progress of the restoration, my eyes caught sight of three “Big Twin” Harley Davidson motorcycles in the far corner of the shop. Also, under a dust cover, that begged the question “What’s that?” As Ray pulled back the cover, we could see a restored vintage Harley Davidson frame and cradled in its belly was a beautifully restored “Big Twin” 1200 cc engine. Brightly polished aluminum and chrome plated, it was obvious what was to be a fully restored vintage Harley, one of five (5) that Ray has restored. At this point we were directed to an adjacent building which is complimentary to the other restored buildings, house and barn, that are the centerpieces of a 20-year restoration project, undertaken by Ray & Marilyn, and known as “Olde Field Farm”. Upon entering the building, what one saw was the unfinished back of a cello, which was created by Ray. Within the confines of this small building, Ray masterfully creates violins and cellos, honed from the trunks of curly maple trees. Some of the guests were not aware that Ray was the creator of these finely crafted musical instruments. Needless to say, the craftmanship that goes into the creation of these beautiful instruments goes back centuries, and Ray has mastered his craft to the point of perfection. As a result, his instruments are sought after by musicians worldwide. Everyone was impressed with what they saw and stood in awe. Healey Exhaust Notes Page 26 MAY 2019
While humble and reluctant, Ray gave in to the request to provide us with some chin music on one of his creations. The Irish Jig that he played brought a smile to everyone’s face and a well-deserved round of applause. As one who does not know a whole note from a half note, I asked Ray what was the difference between a violin and a fiddle? Ray jokingly replied “the price!”. The next stop was the restored farm house and Marilyn’s kitchen, where the guest enjoyed a Smorgasbord of culinary creations provided by Marilyn and the other ladies in attendance. I might add that as well as being a gracious hostess, Marilyn is a former music instructor in the local school system. Marilyn is also an accomplished violinist and vocalist in her church choir. Did I also mention that she and Ray are members of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra! It is little wonder, that everyone enjoyed the day at the “Olde Field Farm”! In closing, a big thank you and a huge welcome to Ray & Marilyn Melanson to the Austin Healey Club of America, New England Region. Respectfully submitted, Bruce Newcomb Healey Exhaust Notes Page 27 MAY 2019
