Hudson’s Hope RCMP responded to 57 calls for service between May 12th to June 16th. 47 written violations and warning tickets were issued to drivers between the above dates. Highway and road safety continues to be a big focus for the Hudson’s Hope RCMP. Police have received reports to the increasing number of vehicles speeding along Beattie Drive, therefore police will be monitoring this area frequently. Speeding fines can range from $138.00 to $196.00, with excessive speeding resulting in a $368.00 fine and a 7 day im- pound of the vehicle. Speeding in school zone fines range from $196.00 to $253.00. Please obey local speed limits within our community. Hudson’s Hope RCMP is currently working with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure as well as the local District Office to seek better school zone signage implemented along Beattie Dr. On May 16th, the Hudson’s Hope RCMP received a report of a break and enter to a residence on Beckman Rd. It was reported that the residence and several outbuildings had been bro- ken into and a large amount of personal belongings including firearms, ATV’s, dirt bikes, lawnmower, and various personal belongings had been stolen. During a separate investiga- tion where the Hudson’s Hope RCMP were conducting a search warrant on a property along Farrell Creek Rd., police located and seized a large amount of items that were confirmed to have been stolen from the residence on Beckman Rd. The Hudson’s Hope RCMP will be re- uniting the owners with their property. On May 16th, the Hudson’s Hope RCMP stopped a male who was observed riding an ATV along Canyon Dr. During the investigation, police confirmed the driver to be intoxicated and the driver was later charged with operating a conveyance while under the influence of alco- hol. On May 25th, the Hudson’s Hope RCMP received a report of an active break and enter onto a fuel site located along the Haystack Rd. Police were advised that via live CCTV footage, suspects were observed cutting the locks to a fuel storage tank and were actively pumping fuel out into a large holding tank on the suspect’s truck. Workers for the fuel site inter- vened while the offence was in progress and the suspects fled the scene, ramming into several of the vehicles on site. Police have identified one of the suspects and charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle are being sought. On May 27th, the Hudson’s Hope RCMP were advised of an individual who was seen riding a bicycle along Beattie Dr. who was observed with what was believed to be a firearm slung over his back. Upon locating the individual, police confirmed that the firearm was that of an airsoft gun. Though it was only an airsoft rifle, from a distance, it would have appeared to be a real firearm. Police spoke with the individual and educated him on how to properly transport his airsoft guns in the future to alleviate any future calls to the police. On June 9, the Hudson Hope RCMP attended a residence on Farrell Creek Rd. to arrest a man for dangerous driving and theft. Upon arrival, the officers observed several stolen items related to a number of thefts in the area as well as a caged black bear cub. A warrant for the property was sought and executed with the assistance of BC Conservation Service. The Bulletin 8 July 2020
The search of the residence and property resulted in a number of illegally stored/stolen fire- arms, tools, seven stolen vehicles including pick up trucks, ATV’s, motorcycles, medical gear and various other items. The bear cub was seized by the BC Conservation Service and was transported to a wildlife sanctuary. “A great initial investigation done by the Hudson’s Hope RCMP officers, followed up by the support of the Fort St John Police Dog Services, North District General Investigation Section, Forensic Identification Services, officers from neighboring detachments and the BC Conser- vation Services, which lead to the seizure and soon to be returned stolen property worth thousands of dollars. Further, the safe recovery of a small bear cub”. 25-year-old Justin Thibault is in custody pending a bail hearing and is facing a laundry list of firearms and possession of stolen property charges, as well as dangerous operation of a vehicle, break and enter and a wildlife charges. A 29-year-old woman was also arrested but was released with a future court date. The Hudson’s Hope RCMP is asking that if anyone has been a victim of a theft but have not reported it to the police, please call the Hudson’s Hope RCMP at 250-783-5241 and make a report. The Hudson’s Hope RCMP have recently spoke with the wildlife sanctuary, and they con- firmed that the 6-month old bear cub, “The Rock” is doing great, back to eating again, and is very feisty! The future plan for “The Rock”, is for him to be released back into the wild sometime next year. Anyone with information regarding current or past investigations can contact the Hudson’s Hope RCMP directly at 250-783-5241 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800- 222-8477. LICENSING AND REGISTRATION A Canadian pleasure craft may be licensed or registered. Pleasure Craft Licence If you operate or keep your boat mostly in Canada, and it is powered by one or more motors adding up to 7.5 kW (10 hp) or more, you must get it licensed, unless you register it. You must also license dinghies or tenders you carry aboard or tow behind a larger boat. Licence numbers need to be displayed in contrasting color, as close to the bow as possible, on both sides of the vessel. A pleasure craft license is a free document giving your boat a unique license number that is valid for 10 years. The Pleasure Craft Licensing System allows Search and Rescue personnel to access information about your boat 24 hours a day, seven days a week in the event of an emergency. This could mean the difference between life and death! If your boat does not need a pleasure craft license, you can choose to get one for safety reasons. Visit http:// www.tc.gc.ca/eng/marinesafety/debs-obs-paperwork-paperwork_boat_licence-3212.htm , or call 1-800-267-6687 for more info. Failure to license your vessel, failure to have license on board, or allowing unlicensed vessel to be operated by another, may result in a fine of $287.50 being issued. Proof of Competency Going out on the water requires basic boating safety knowledge and a good understanding of the “rules of the road” for Canadian waterways. That’s why everyone who operates a motor- ized pleasure craft must carry proof of competency on board. This includes all types of motor- ized boats, no matter their size or horsepower of the engine (this includes small boats with electric motors.) What are the Accepted Forms of Proof of Competency? Proof of competency can be any of the following: • a Pleasure Craft Operator Card; • proof of having passed a boating safety course in Canada before April 1, 1999; • a specified marine certificate; or • a completed rental boat safety checklist (good only for rental period). Operating a vessel without prescribed competency, failure to have proof of competency on board, or allowing a person without prescribed competency to operate vessel, may result in a fine of $287.50 being issued. Boat operators must insure they comply with all safety requirements and have all required safety equipment. Non-compliance with Canada Shipping Act and Small Vessel Regulations may result in fines being issued to the operator. As always, impaired operation of a vessel is a Criminal Offence. Visit www.tc.gc.ca for complete information on all requirements related to licensing and safety equipment. Please boat responsibly. The Bulletin 10 July 2020
Hello everyone and welcome to the Lions Den. I hope everyone is enjoying the lush green of summer. It’s nice to see people out and about though still practicing social distancing. A big thanks goes out to all those that bought tickets for our Meat Draw in support of our local Food Bank. Together we made $1,850, all of which was donated to the Food Bank. Congratulations goes out to Paul Dupuis, the lucky winner of the cooler full of meat!! School is out for the summer and it certainly has been a unique year for everyone. Every year the Lions Club gives a $1,000 scholarship to the student who recognizes the im- portance of volunteer work and is an active participant. This year I am pleased to announce that the scholarship goes to Taylor Rowe. He has done everything from peeling 275 pota- toes to building a house overseas. He comes by volunteerism honestly as his father and grandfather were both active Lions Club members. Good luck in the next chapter of your life Taylor and keep up the great work!! Canada Day will be a bit different this year. We won’t be flipping burgers in the park but we will be judging the best decorated Canada Day houses. The District has lots of great things planned for Canada Day and decorating your home, deck or driveway is one of them. Show your Canadian pride and decorate your house. If you want to lend a hand and become a member, check out our Facebook page @hudsonshopelionsclub or email us at lionsclubhh@gmail.com. We are always looking for new members! Submitted with pride Roary “Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart” DISTRICT OFFICE UTILITY NEWS Public Notice Utility bills have been mailed out. If paid by August 14, 2020 you only have to pay the discounted amount. July 2020 11 The Bulletin

Amber Norton, Library Director Interlibrary Loans: As of June 19th when this is being written, Interlibrary Loans are to remain closed. They will remain closed until the Provincial Library authorities deem it safe to reactivate this service. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. Library Directors all over the province, including myself, as well as the provincial authorities that govern ILL service, are diligently working toward having library sector guidance in place in order to safely distribute materi- als throughout the province. Current Library Services: We are now open but the hours have changed to try to accom- modate more patrons that are abiding by varying levels of COVID-19 self-protection, please see our advertising to see what days and hours certain services are available. We have employees in the library on Mondays but are closed to the general public so that Shellie has the full day to conduct Summer Reading Club online sessions via zoom. This day has also been set aside for medically vulnerable patrons, including seniors, to make appointments to access the library. To the general public, we are open 5 hours a day from Tuesday through Friday, which leaves time before and/or after where staff can still accommodate contactless holds pickups. Please see our advertising in this Bulletin for, Library Takeout, Vulnerable Patron Library Access and “Grab & Go” access including library hours. Please take care in noting which hours are available and for what service, as there are two ads that include a list of hours and only one set of hours are for public access. Please also note, the library is only open to individual users at this time and only for short term browsing and checkouts. Service levels will likely be somewhat amended sometime in the weeks following a provin- cial announcement to move in to phase 3 of the BC Restart Plan. Item Donations – Item donations may now be brought to the library. Please note that we can only accept a few books at a time, no more than a standard grocery bag at a time per household. Please add a note to your donation with your name so that we can properly thank you in the Bulletin, tie the bag shut and leave in our outside book drop which is next to the bulletin board. If you have items that cannot fit through the book drop, we cannot accept those donations at this time. All items coming in from the public must be quaran- tined for 72 hours prior to employee handling until such time that the Library sector de- fines a reduced quarantine period. Summer Reading Club – Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, keeping in mind the new library capacity and the excessive amount of staff hours that would be needed in order to provide face-to-face programming with lower numbers of children per group, we are opting to provide SRC as an online program supplemented by weekly packages of reading materials and craft supplies to be picked up at the library. The Bulletin 20 July 2020
Shellie Howard, Program Librarian Summer Reading Club is a go! And we couldn’t be more excited! Because of the corona- virus and the shut downs all over BC, SRC will be done online. It is super easy to get your child registered. This is what SRC sent us for you to get you started. Hi Everyone — Online registration is open! We are delighted to welcome you to the new 2020 BC SRC Online website: bcsrc.ca We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Co- lumbia through the Ministry of Education for making this possible! As of Monday, June 15th, children and their families can register online for the 2020 BC SRC, track their summer reading, and unlock digital badges for every 7 days of reading! And, starting June 29th, BC kids will have access to weekly activ- ities, quizzes, contents and fun! I logged in and checked it all out it looks pretty amazing. For those of you who are not able to register online, please email me or call the library Monday through Wednesday. This summer we will have four age groups for SRC. Starting with our Story time littles and parents! This club is directed toward preschoolers but moms with babies are welcome to join the online Zoom socialization. We will also have puppet story time, so don’t miss out! There will be a Summer Reading Club for 5-8 year olds as well as for 9-12. These sessions will have live stories being read, craft sessions, games and a whole lot more fun! Our SRC for teens ages 13-18 is a service that is not reinforced with provincial help with materials and program development, as the other SRC programs are, but we know a lot of teens out there that love to read and/or would like to join in on the Zoom session. If your teen would like to join, you just need to call the Hudson’s Hope Public Library to register for Teen SRC as there is no option for teens to sign up on the SRC registration page. Our Programs will be on ZOOM on Mondays at set times for all four age groups, more information for these timings will be provided with the first SRC package of materials. So please register your kids and get started. We have prizes for the participants of this pro- gram, so make sure they are registered as they might win an amazing prize! Please check out our Facebook page and our website for updates or call us anytime. Due to the participants of these programs being underage, the Zoom link will not be shareable. You must be registered for the session so that you can get a personal link direct- ly to your email. Please let us know in advance if you cannot connect a camera to this ses- sion, because for security purposes, we may remove unidentified users from the session if they are not recognized by the Program Librarian. Tuesday’s Craft posts on Facebook is still going strong. Please keep on crafting with your kids and feel free to send an email or a Facebook post of what you have made, we would love to see it. Stay tuned for more information as it develops. SRC will be different this year but it will be fun!!! We are excited to welcome Kristina Coombs to the Recreation and Special Events Coordi- nator position at the District of Hudson’s Hope and look forward on collaborating again this year as she will provide a physical component to most of the SRC club Zoom ses- sions! Thank you: There has been a lot of work on a local level, as well as a provincial library level, to get our library to a place where we feel prepared to open for our community members in a safe way. We have been neck deep in things from board policy to operation- al procedures, and waiting for mandatory items to be delivered due to backlogs from our vendors. It has been a long process and all staff here in the library have been working hard toward a reopening, starting as far back as the day we closed on March 16th. We thank you so much for your understanding that it takes time to make all of these changes within our organization. We look forward to seeing all of your faces again and providing library services that we all can feel comfortable with. Healthy wishes from the HHPL staff! Canada Sun Guide When you get a sunburn, the long-term effects of skin injured by the sun can be very seri- ous. The more time young people spend unprotected in the sun, the higher their risk for developing skin cancer later in life. Dermatologists describe a burn as being the skin cells’ response to injury. Getting a tan also injures skin cells. When skin cells are damaged skin cancer can result from these irreparable cell mutations. Outdoor physical activity can be healthy, fun and safe if you remain protected. Follow the Canada Sun Guide, created by Canada Safety Council and other partners, to help Canadians combine sun safety with outdoor activities. Minimize Sun Exposure • Schedule outdoor physical activities when UV rays are at their weakest—before 11am and after 4pm, especially between the months of April and October. • Always keep children under the age of one out of the sun. • Remember that skin doesn't have to be hot to burn, so don’t be fooled by cloudy or overcast weather. • Remember too that water, snow, sand and concrete can re- flect and increase the sun’s burning rays. Seek and Create Shade • Seek natural shade from trees and buildings. • Plant trees in schoolyards and other play areas. • Use shade umbrellas, or create other forms of shade if natural shade is not possible. • Keep playpens, strollers and carriages in shaded areas. Cover Up • Cover children’s heads, necks and ears with a broad brimmed hat when outdoors. • Protect arms and legs with tightly woven, loose fitting, cotton clothing. • Children should wear a T-shirt over their bathing suit, and long shorts instead of short shorts. • Wear UVA/UVB protective sunglasses—children can wear them too. Use Sunscreen • Have children use a broad spectrum sunscreen (protects against both UVA and UVB rays) with an SPF of 15 or more. • Apply sunscreen generously before all outdoor physical activities. Remember to apply at least 20 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply often, as perspiration will reduce the effec- tiveness.
