book review men’s shed From the Confederation Park 55 + Book Club Once again, the members were pretty well evenly divided in their opinion of this month's book choice, "The Hot Zone" by Richard Preston. The book is about an outbreak of Ebola in Africa and then the discovery of the virus in monkeys sent to Washington, D.C. The author, a journalist, chose to write the book in the style Thank you to the Calgary Foundation for helping of a mystery thriller rather than a documentary. men’s health Men’s Health Are you procrastinating with your health? Are you turning that trivializing issue into a potential scare? No matter what red flags you are visualizing perhaps it is helpful to first understand why you are procrastinating in the first place. Are you too casual about your own health? Are you disinterested? So, are you ready to ditch the “I’ll get to it sometime” attitude? All right then. See your doctor for regular checkups. Don’t wait until a problem or symptom becomes unbearable before having it checked. Regular checkups can detect a number of different diseases that can threaten your health. Tell the truth. Not talking about it will not make it go away. Some issues related to urology can possibly indicate other health problems. Do your homework. Know the right age to be screened for various health conditions. Ask you doctor to set up a timeline for your screenings. Here is a sample timeline: Age 50 colon or rectal cancer screening Age 50 prostrate cancer Age 20 cardiovascular or coronary artery disease Age 20 blood pressure screenings Prevention is so important for the men in our lives. Know the facts, be proactive, take advantage of the numerous advancements in healthcare and make the difference in the quality and length of life in the men we love. Robbie Burns’ Nicht - A Grand Success The fifth annual Burns’ Nicht, held on January 24, 2020, was a great success! This combined effort on the part of Confederation Park 55+ Activity Centre and the Thursday Night Scottish Country Dance Club was attended by 150 guests. Those present enjoyed great entertainment provided by Sean Emery, John Ber- tram, Carol Johnson, Stuart Clark, Patricia Johnson, Doreen Herdman, Eric Coyle, and the Wilson School of Highland Dancers. Our very entertaining MC, Lloyd Northcott, presided over events and a Ceilidh was organized by Janyn Bertram. A delicious Burns’ dinner was served, after which the guests joined in the lively dancing. We are very grateful to those supporters who donated items for the Silent Auc- tion and Door Prizes, which certainly help to support seniors’ programs and Scot- tish Country dancing at the Centre. Thanks also to those who showed their sup- port by bidding on the many donated items. Many thanks to everyone who volunteered to help make this Robbie Burns’ Nicht such a wonderful success. We couldn’t do it without you. We greatly look forward to seeing everyone in 2021! yycseniors.com February 2020 15

new members Once again we are rolling into the New Year with a whole bunch of new members! Welcome to all of you and thanks for joining us. Did you know that you can come for a tour of our beautiful building any time we are open and a staff member will be happy to show you around? Our members are very diverse. Some just pop in for the excercise classes and some are here for the clubs, but everyone is here for the camraderie. The 55 + gang here, is outstanding at face to face communication. They understand the importance of making people feel welcome and just having fun. We give a lot of tours of the Centre to people that feel a bit lost. Some aren’t quite sure what to do with their days and they are looking for a place to feel comfortable. That feeling is very normal. This is the time to find the joy in friendship and laughter with others that have had the same life experiences as you. So if you are looking for friendship or to put on your dancing shoes to improve your balance or to give back to community by volunteering, the Confederation Park 55 + Activity Centre is the place to be. Thanks for supporting our Centre and our community. Your membership matters to us and keeps us as the joyful, funfilled community we take pride in. -Angela McIntyre 26 2212 13 St NW, Calgary, AB T2M 4P7 403-289-4780 February 2020
Interested in placing your name forward as a member of the Board? Serving on a volunteer board is one of the most personally and professionally rewarding experiences you can imagine. Non-profit organizations rely on strong leadership to drive change, achieve their missions all under the guidance of the organization’s strategic plan. Here is an analogy that may help you make your decision. It is like a bus on a highway. The board sets the direction of the highway, the Executive Director drives the bus, the staff turn the wheels and the members are the passengers. So are you interested in charting the course of the centre? Well then, get on board! Annual General Meeting March 18, 2020 Keep this date in mind. NEXT-TO-NEW BOUTIQUE JEWELLERY is accepting donations of jewellery If you would like to donnate broken or used jewellery pieces we will be happy to accept them. Thank you. yycseniors.com February 2020 27
