Now, Australia warmly opens its arms and invites WONCA back to its beginnings to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) is delighted to submit this bid to host WONCA 2022 in Sydney, Australia. The RACGP has a strong history of hosting successful national conferences with our own GP17, also held in Sydney, attracting over 2,300 attendees from Australia and across the globe. The RACGP’s prominent and influential voice ensures our communities, stakeholders and political decision makers – both within Australia and overseas – understand the vital role GPs play in our communities. It is a voice which extends to all levels of government to allow policy makers to make informed decisions for Australian patients. The RACGP defines the nature of the general practice discipline, sets the standards and curriculum for education and training, maintains the standards for quality clinical practice, and supports GPs in their pursuit of excellence in patient care and community service. Australia’s success in delivering a nationwide, cost-effective health service has been increasingly recognised internationally. The standards of care the RACGP sets have seen international delegates turn to the RACGP for guidance on how they too can bring their nation’s healthcare system in line with the caliber of Australia’s. 27 Appendix 1: Letters of support GP22 Excellence in global health WONCA 2022 / Sydney, Australia 29th May 2018 Professor Amanda Howe, President Dr Garth Manning, Chief Executive Officer World Organisation of Family Doctors 152 North Sathon Road, 12A-05 Chartered Square Building Silom, Bangrak Bangkok, 10500 THAILAND Dear Professor Howe and Dr Manning It is with great pleasure that I provide this letter of support on behalf of Western Sydney University for The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners’ bid to host the 24th WONCA World Conference in 2022 in Sydney, Australia. I am Chair of the Department of General Practice at Western Sydney University and a copted member of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Faculty of the RACGP (previously Deputy Chair). I have previously attended a number of WONCA conferences and find them inspiring and collegial events. In Australia we are on the brink of some major changes in primary health care with the potential to move to a more mixed funding model and to implement changes such as those modelled by Patient Centred Medical Homes. Such changes would improve both the quality and accessibility of primary health care particularly for those with chronic illness. My particular interest is in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health where we have seen similar models of primary health care in Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services. The funding for these services, meeting the needs of the sickest and most disadvantaged communities in Australia is always precarious and would be better supported by universal adoption of PCMH models of primary health care. For Australia to host the WONCA World Conference in 2022 would send a strong signal to our government regarding the funding and performance of Australian primary health care in comparison to that in other countries. They will see there are better options available than our almost entirely fee for service model. It would put primary health care in sharp focus at a time when much of the attention and funding has been directed to secondary and tertiary health services. At Western Sydney University we have been involved in evaluation of a number of local pilots of primary and integrated health services innovations. We are keen to see the benefits realised in these small projects extended more widely but need government support for this to occur. Western Sydney University looks forward to welcoming our colleagues from the WONCA global community to Sydney, Australia in 2022 for an outstanding World Conference. Yours sincerely Professor Jennifer Reath Peter Brennan Foundation Chair of General Practice Western Sydney University
