Foreword Welcome to the Summer 2018 prospectus from the Humber Recovery College. Humber NHS Foundation Trust continues to support the Recovery College and our core values of Caring, Learning and Growing, puts the person at the centre of everything we do. The Humber Recovery College supports this educational approach to mental wellbeing, supporting individuals to recognise their own resourcefulness, talents and abilities in order to support them with knowledge and provide useful tools enabling them to become experts in their own self-care. Mental Health professionals, tutors with lived experience, peer-support workers, volunteers and students themselves co-productively work together to design and deliver the educational courses and provide resources to empower mental health service users and those who support them. Because of this, our courses are innovative, original and relevant to someone experiencing mental health difficulties. Michele Moran Humber NHS Foundation Trust Chief Executive 4
Recovery Recovery is a personal journey. You might already have, or are at least developing, your own definition of what recovery means to you. By focusing on strengths, abilities and personal experience, this approach empowers individuals to work towards their own goals whilst inspiring others to work towards theirs. Hope - that it is possible to work towards your own goals as defined by you Opportunity - to build a meaningful and satisfying life irrespective of any illness Control - over any symptoms you may experience and of your own future 5
Recovery is... … finding meaning in your experiences … finding a new sense of who you are and what your purpose is … discovering and using your own resources and resourcefulness … growing from your experiences and taking back a sense of control … rebuilding a satisfying, hopeful and contributing life … a person-centred approach to mental wellbeing … about recognising that each person has a rich lived experience to bring to the table (both in and outside of healthcare) Recovery is NOT… … a theory about what causes mental health problems … about an end product or result … about making someone ‘better’ … a linear process … just for people who have experienced mental health difficulties … the same thing as a ‘cure’ … a professional treatment or intervention 6
About the Humber Recovery College The Recovery College uses an educational model and a focus on lived experience and personal strengths to promote good mental wellbeing within the community and to challenge stigmas associated with mental health. Our college welcomes people from all walks of life and backgrounds, regardless of if they have mental health difficulties or not. Students, tutors with lived experience, mental health professionals, peer-support workers, volunteers and students co-productively work together to design and deliver original, innovative workshops and courses to empower and support people who are experiencing or have experienced mental difficulties, to those who support them and to those who have an interest in keeping themselves mentally and emotionally well. We promote Hope by... Providing hope-filled courses in a hope-inspiring environment Offering hope-inspiring relationships Helping people to make sense of and find meaning in experiences Helping individuals to recognise and develop their own strengths, talents, skills and resources whilst developing new skills and understanding Supporting individuals to share their stories and contribute their skills and knowledge to help and inspire others with similar experiences We believe in people and ‘hold’ their hope until they can believe that a 7 decent life and future is possible for themselves
We promote Control by... Supporting you to find purpose and direction in life by helping you find new dreams and ambitions and to decide what is important to you Helping you to become an expert in your own self-care and work out the ways of managing your problems so they don’t get in the way of you pursuing your goals Offering tools and identifying options which could help you manage your mental wellbeing in a way that best suits you Encouraging you to recognise your existing strengths, talents, skills and resources and help you identify how they can best support you on your recovery journey Supporting you to decide what sort of help and support you need in order to follow your ambitions We promote Opportunity by... Providing free helpful and inspiring courses and workshops across Hull and East Riding that have no eligibility criteria Working with partner organisations and groups to help you have access to different opportunities Encouraging you to know that you are a valued member of the community Promoting co-design, co-production and co-facilitation within the Recovery College Providing the opportunity to help you contribute to the Recovery College as an idea-giver, peer-support worker or tutor - we’d love for you to get involved! 8

Although volunteering is not the same as work experience it can provide a valuable insight in to NHS work environments, enabling you to improve your skills and knowledge. Other benefits of being a volunteer can include improving confidence, meeting new people and even improving your mental health. Volunteers need to go through the Trust’s usual recruitment processes including a DBS check (which the Trust will pay for), and you will also be required to attend a one day induction before you can start your chosen role. If you are interested in finding out more about becoming a volunteer with the Recovery College (or within the Trust in general), please contact Sam at the Volunteer Services Team at: 01482 477862 - hnf-tr.voluntaryservices@nhs.net You can also get further information from our website: www.humber.nhs.uk/working-at-humber/volunteering Volunteering 11

15 Where do I find the Recovery College? The Recovery College is not one building. Instead, courses are delivered in partnered venues within the community across Hull and East Riding using a ‘Hub and Spoke’ model. FAQs Do I need to be referred into the College? No! The Recovery College does not take referrals as we are not a service, although healthcare professionals are encouraged to signpost people our way. It is your decision entirely to become a student, to enrol and determine the course(s) you want to do. How do I enrol? Simple! You complete an enrolment form and send it back to us along with an enrolment any course fees. This can be done electronically, via the post or at one of our enrolment days. However, we do not take telephone enrolments. Who can access the Recovery College? We are proud to not have an eligibility criteria when it comes to accessing our courses; you do not need to be ‘recovering’ from illness to benefit from these courses as they can contribute to your own personal sense of good mental wellbeing. Is this like school/college? Yes, in so much as you’re learning and you’re a student with us! We operate in informal, safe, adult educational spaces where mutual respect is important. Are there parking facilities? We aim to provide venues that are accessible by public transport, and where possible, ensure there are free or paid parking facilities onsite or nearby. Humber NHS Foundation Trust is proud to provide free parking at all of its sites. It is advisable that you plan ahead. Any parking fees are the responsibility of the vehicle owner.
How much do these courses cost? We do not charge for our courses. However, we ask for £1 per person for each enrolment form we receive. Some courses also require us to purchase extra resources so we also ask students to contribute a small amount towards these costs - details of these can be found within the course descriptions. These courses must be paid for upon enrolment and are normally non-refundable (feel free to ring us to check if there’s spaces before enrolling) - you will not be enrolled without it! How can I pay? You can pay in person (e.g. at Enrolment Days), by cheque or postal order (we advise against sending cash in the post) or over the telephone to pay by card (once we’ve received your Enrolment Form through the post/email). You will NOT be enrolled onto any courses until full payment for all monies been received by the college. What will I need to bring? Will there be refreshments? Although the tutors will provide the materials required for the course, it may be helpful to bring a pen and a folder for your notes. We cannot guarantee that refreshments are available at any of our venues so please bring a drink and any snacks you require. Other courses will specify that you wear suitable clothing, and others may invite you to bring some of your own materials. These exceptions will be described under individual course descriptions. I want to attend a course but I’d prefer it if someone I knew came with me - is that ok? Of course! Because of our inclusivity, anyone can attend as long as they also enrol. However, we ask that anyone accompanying a student will actively participate in the course/workshop too! I have another question - who do I ask? You can ask anyone in the Recovery College team if you see them during the workshops/courses. You can also look online for information at www.humberrecoverycollege.nhs.uk, contact us via Twitter (@HFTRecoveryCol) or Facebook (/HumberRecoveryCollege). Ring our office on 01482 389 124 or email us at hnf-tr.recoverycollege@nhs.net and we’ll do our best to answer your questions! 16
