Welcome to HTW Berlin! We look forward to welcoming you as new members of our university of applied sciences at our official enrolment ceremony at 10.00 on the 3rd of April 2018 at the Alte Försterei stadium. And then you will start your studies – beginning by getting to know many new people. Students from later semes- ters, teaching staff and members of the university's administration and ser- vices are on hand to help you get started at the university, your faculty and your study programme. Be curious and don't hesitate to ask questions. As you will discover, HTW Berlin offers lots of support to help you begin your studies. Nevertheless, we recommend that you don't go it alone, but instead get in contact with your fellow students right from the start. Getting going is undoubtedly easier together with others. We, the university staff and students, wish you a great start and successful studies. It is going to take some hard work. But we'll do our best to support you every step of the way. Health insurance We require a certificate of insurance from your health insurance provider. This insurance status certificate for students in higher education includes three pages (or sections). This serves as proof that you are insured. The second part is sent to the health insurance provider given at the start of your studies as proof of your student status. The third part is used by the university to register the retraction of your student status with your health insurance provider. The three sections of the health insurance documentation must be submitted for enrolment with the university. Semester ticket • Students completing a practical or international semester, or currently completing their final thesis (at least 3 contiguous months spent outside the region covered by the Berlin-Brandenburg travel network) • Part-time studies or doctoral studies What is the semester ticket, and what does it mean for you? The semester ticket is a personalised, non-transferable travel card for local public transport. The HTW StudentCard features a VBB transport authority sticker stating the valid semester. With your photo, the HTW StudentCard can also be used as a travel card. Your StudentCard needs to be updated before the start of every semester. Your card can be updated at the card validation machines. This does not require a new StudentCard. During the summer semester, the ticket is valid from the 1st of April to the 30th of September; in the winter semester from the 1st of October until the 31st of March. The semester ticket allows you to travel on all services provided by the VBB in Berlin tariff zones ABC (Berlin and surrounding area). Special services and long-range lines are excluded. Local train services and InterRegio trains within the stipulated tariff zones are included, but long- range train services (ICE, EC, IC) are not. The semester ticket allows you take the following with you for no extra charge: • Children aged under 6 (for ferries, maximum three children), • Luggage • A dog • A pram/buggy • A bicycle The general conditions of travel as stipulated by the transport authority shall otherwise apply. You always travel by bike or by car. You do not require the ticket. Can you be exempt? No, exemptions from the semester ticket fee are only available for students who are objectively prevented from using the ticket. If you do not wish to use it, but in principle could use it, then you still have to pay. The semester ticket is a solidarity-based system. This means that all students are required to pay which makes the price significantly cheaper for everyone. You have subscribed to an annual travel card for public transport. Do you have to pay twice? No, you can cancel your subscription. As soon as you have received your Stu- dentCard for the semester, take it to the subscriptions office of the transport authority. You can then receive a refund for the time remaining on your subscription. You live outside of tariff zone C. Further information can be found at: Can you get a semester ticket valid for Berlin and the surrounding state of http://www.bahn.de/p/view/ange- Brandenburg from us? bot/abo_berlin/ No, unfortunately not. The HTW Berlin semester ticket is only valid for the VBB vbb_semesterticket.shtml tariff zones Berlin ABC. But: You can purchase an extension ticket from Deutsche Bahn which is valid for a semester. Registering for modules on your study programme Now that I have a study place, how to I sign up for modules? The online campus management system called the LSF is used to register for modules at HTW. As a newly enrolled student, you are guaranteed a place on all of your first-semester modules and these modules registrations have already been carried out on your behalf. Is module registration always automatic? No, from the second programme semester onwards, you are responsible for registering yourself on the desired modules. And how do I know which subjects I need to take from the second semester onwards? Based on the modules they have completed, all students use an online regis- tration process to apply for places in individual courses. Details can be found on the faculty websites and in your study programme overview. Is my timetable available to view now? Once you have received your enrolment documentation Teaching schedule in the LSF around 1 week before the semester starts. What is the web address and how do I log on? You can already visit the LSF without logging in to access information on the broad range of study options at the university and get to know how the sys- tem works. Activate you login details at http://start.htw-berlin.de The login details are sent to the address entered during the online application. The LSF web address is http://lsf.htw-berlin.de Why is my personal timetable still empty? The modules you are registered for will be displayed until at the latest one week before your studies commence. Please do not attempt to register for any modules until you can view your timetable. This is the only way we can ensure your place is reserved for the first-semester modules. Might the scheduling of some modules clash? HTW Berlin helps you avoid delays in your studies by creating model registration plans that ensure you can register for all compulsory modules without any time clashes. Are the model registration plans compulsory? We recommend that you stick to the model registration plan for the first semester. 10 First semester information | HTW Berlin
Registering for modules on your study programme This semester I can't attend any modules which take place on a Tuesday – what do I do now? When you amend your timetable (e.g. because you want to swap the time of a particular module), you lose your module registration (and thus your right to a place) and join all other students in the module place allocation process described on our website. If you have a special case, please contact your fac- ulty's administration. According to my semester plan I need to complete a foreign language module in my first semester, has this already been registered for me? Yes, in these cases the standard option (English) is registered for you. But I would prefer to take another language than that selected in the model registration plan. How can I do this? You can apply to register for a place on another language module in the LSF. If you opt for modules different from those on your model registration plan, you should ensure that you withdraw your registration from any modules you do not intend to study. Who should I contact if I have questions regarding foreign languages? The Foreign Languages Centre can help you with any questions relating to languages. Check https://www.htw-berlin.de/studierende/fremdsprachen/ for all contact details. I have read that I need to register for AWE supplementary modules in the first semester. What are they? AWE stands for Allgemeinwissenschaftliche Ergänzungsfächer - supplemen- tary general studies modules. These include foreign languages. You are required to register for these modules independently according to the availa- bility of spare places. Depending on the regulations of your study programme, it may be possible for you to choose between two or three different language Contact persons from your faculty module variants. are listed below Faculty 1 Cornelia.Pfennig@htw-berlin.de I am beginning at HTW during a later semester (changing universities). It is assumed that all new students have skills and applicant number. in at least one foreign language equivalent to the German Abitur, upon which HTW's language courses then build (e.g. English for Communications Technol- ogy, Business English, Business French, Business Russian etc.) New students, especially those who gained admission based on alternative specialist entry qualifications (as per § 11 of the Berlin Higher Education Act), and whose lan- guage skills potentially deviate from the required starting level, are therefore offered a range of optional intensive courses. The courses in French, Spanish and Russian (see above) are especially recommended for students whose pro- gramme regulations allow a second foreign language to be studied – today an increasingly important qualification.
