Old Man Dumped with the rubbish In October a record-breaking cat arrived at the rescue In our last magazine (Animals in Distress Magazine Issue 70) we reported that a centre – Old Man had been living as a stray for a long litter of seven puppies, just a few days old, had come into our care. The pups time, and when he arrived he was very thin. Our vet had been found abandoned in a cardboard box in Torquay by rubbish bins - estimated that Old Man was 20 years old, the oldest on bin day. cat we have ever rescued and rehomed. We worried that no-one would rehome such an old cat, We received so many wonderful donations of puppy milk, cotton but along came Amy and Will who gave him the most wool, a whelping box and playpens for the puppies. Many people wonderful home. made generous donations towards the puppies’ care, including West Kent Buses who donated £1750 to our puppy fund. “He is now called Sweet Boy, but every so often if he’s meowed for the 1000th time that day we sometimes When puppies are taken from their mother so early they don’t burst out with ‘OLD MAN!!!” always survive, and unfortunately one of the pups didn’t He has really wrapped us around his little paw! Kittens Bob, Simba, Bella and Oscar were abandoned on our drive early one morning in November, with their mum Daisy who had sadly escaped the box and fled. The kittens were cared for at the rescue centre and luckily we managed to catch Daisy five days later in a trap. All five cats now have the most wonderful new homes and are thriving with their new families - we will tell you more about them in the next issue. 8 Photo: Mark Passmore/Apex Photo: Mark Passmore/Apex 9

Lots of earthworms. Massive ones. how Bomber's Thank You condition would 19-22affect him in later life - Bomber has certainly made a big impression on us all. He depending on how his bones grew he could be completely is full of life, and personality, and is just an absolute joy. Heartwarming Statisbe long23 fine, or there could term implications like nerve All of our other animals are seniors (10, 11, 14 and 15 years damage or a heart condition which could shorten his old) and we had forgotten just what it is like having a baby lifespan. Thanks to your amazing generosity we are able in the house. But he is smashing, he really is. He will be to pay for Bomber to have an MRI scan once he is fully one in May, and it is then that he will go for his MRI scan grown, which will tell us much more. Bomber’s wonderful to determine how he has grown. Once we know this, we new owner Vicky tells his story: will have a better idea of what his future holds. But he is "We have always gone for the animals that are a little bit a healthy, happy, active baby boy…and we love him very out of the ordinary, and we thought Bomber would fit right much." in. Of course, once we had arranged to go and see him, it was inevitable that we would have him come and live with us. Thank you so much to everyone who so generously gave to Bomber's appeal. We weren't sure what to expect from a kitten with a misshapen spine. So when we met this little grey blur, tearing around, singing his little head off, we were a bit surprised. Maybe we expected him to be staggering around, all wibbly and wobbly. He wasn't. And he isn't. At all. But for the V-shape in his top line, you really wouldn't know there was anything amiss. He is like any other perfectly "normal" kitten. He has lived with us for six months now, and has properly settled in. He has made best friends with the dog, and sleeps in her bed with her at night. They are very sweet together (we think she loves him!) and chase each other around the garden. Our girl cats have got the measure of him, and don't put up with any of his boy nonsense. We don't know what the future holds for him, and whether his spine or rib cage will cause him any mobility problems as he grows. We are determined to let him enjoy as rich a life as he can, while he can. We first let him go outside when he was only three months old, so that he could experience as much as possible in whatever time he has with us. In that short space of time he has learnt to climb. Trees and houses to be precise. He likes to climb onto the roof of the house next door, and will sit on the chimney (the first time we witnessed this, we almost had kittens!). He also likes trying to catch the squirrels that live in the conifer tree (no luck yet). Bomber is still perfecting his newly acquired hunting skills. He is good at catching leaves, sticks and branches, and 10 11
Happy Endings Beth & Blix Beth and Blix are Bonnie so happy with their lovely new family. Bonnie arrived at the rescue centre with her brother Buddy in a pitiful state, with several eye problems which had left her totally blind. Bonnie had severe cataracts in both eyes, and glaucoma in her left eye which was painfully swollen. A veterinary eye specialist recommended that Bonnie’s left eye be removed as soon as possible, and that the cataract on her right eye be surgically treated before it deteriorated to the point of no return. A successful operation would restore 50% sight in Bonnie’s remaining eye. We appealed for your help to restore Bonnie’s sight, and once again we were completely overwhelmed by your incredible generosity. The £1500 needed for all the surgery was quickly raised and Bonnie was able to have all the necessary operations, which were a success. Bonnie is now pain-free and has regained her sight. "Reg was a stray for a long time and was so nervous at first - he was very sick and scared on his first night and Bonnie and her brother Buddy were cared for in a foster I spent 6 hours laying on the floor reassuring him.
