26 June 2020 From the Principal’s Desk Kia ora Katoa On Wednesday we had our first opportunity to have a full school assembly since returning from lock down. The highlight was being able to formally farewell Pete Wilkinson and express our gratitude for his contribution to Menzies College. My assembly speech focused on contribution to community and strength in numbers. The whakatauki that supported this message was: “Ehara toku toa i te toa takitahi He toa takitini toku toa” meaning “My strength is not due to me alone, but due to the strength of many”. The message I hope students have taken away is about getting involved in any and all of the activities that are on offer next term. Some of these opportunities outlined by the committees and others include: recycling, a Mufti Day on the last day of term the cost being a canned food donation to be given to a Foodbank, an inter-whanau basketball competition, helping with the Open Evening on 5 August, Kapa Haka and the Menzies Mana Haka Waiata competition. We have also set the date for the school ball which is Saturday 5 September. Thank you to everyone who supported their child’s learning by attending a conference over the last three weeks. We have targeted an 80% attendance rate, so far we are at 67% with the last few conferences being held this week. Although we set aside dedicated time for these conferences, Whanau or subject teachers are always available to talk to you about your child’s learning. Grades for all subjects at all levels will be sent electronically to parents/caregivers on 24 July. Attitude to Learning Grades will also be published at the same time and expect emails from subject teachers updating you on what the class have been doing. Please refer to Learning Logs for individual comments. In the first week back at school next term we will have a focus on wearing correct uniform. The PB4L committee is supporting this by providing staff with reward tokens to be issued to students who always wear correct uniform. They look fantastic and we are very proud of this. Please take the opportunity over the holidays to pay attention to any repairs required and buy new shoes for growing feet. Lastly, you will see a new canteen price list in this newsletter. Due to wage increases and the cost of ingredients going up, the canteen has been forced to increase their prices. The canteen has to pay its own way otherwise money that is intended for your children’s education is diverted to subsidise it. Please continue to support the canteen, they provide quality food at a reasonable price and we want this to continue into the future. They will be redistributed to players who may need them. Lastly, good luck to our players this weekend! Thank you . Mrs Lucy McKelvie (Teacher in Charge of Rugby) English Department We end the term amidst a hive of activity! Our Level Three students are becoming adept jugglers as they balance: Writing Portfolio, Auteur Study and Seminar. I’m really looking forward to the Seminar assessment next Friday as it provides a varied means of assessment and helps to prepare our students for ‘life after school’ where it’s very likely that they will have to present seminars in their study and/or future careers. Level Two and Level One are also ending the term in a similar manner: assessment being completed, sent for moderation and given back to students. The 101 class have also been engaged in creative assessments: this week finishing Static Image assessments while also preparing for their Speech assessment (which will be delivered in the first week of Term Three). Not to be forgotten are our hard-working Year Nine and Ten students who have also delivered Speeches, created Static Images and are currently preparing for a written assessment. As you can see, a core determiner within our curriculum requires teaching and learning programmes to value three means of communication: written / oral / visual. We endeavour to return assessments as quickly as possible and we’re proud of our (generally) prompt turnaround. As you can see from the range of assessments referenced above, our subject is not always ‘black and white’. Generally, there are no wrong answers: more it’s the quality of the response and argument which determines the grade. As such, our department works collectively to ensure that we are looking at the assessment (whether it be produced in Year 9 or Year 13) through one, national "eye". Frequently we send student work to be moderated with English teachers in other schools: and frequently we receive work from our colleagues in other parts of New Zealand. We wish our Junior Speech Competition entrants all the best as they prepare for the competition on 2 July. They are: Josie McLellan, Ellie Sisley, Sophie Ferguson, Liana Gauldie and Hunter Richards (Year Ten) and Tessa Ayers, Trent Reriti, Rueben Constantine, Lewis McKelvie, Olivia Perriam and Ethan Stewart (Year Nine). Included in this newsletter are three Static Images produced by Ellie Sisley (top image) Anna Sinclair (middle image) and Josie McLellan (bottom image). These images are powerful and convey a strong message which links clearly to the visuals. If you require any further information regarding the process of your son/ daughter please do not hesitate to get in touch. On behalf of the English Department Mrs Lucy McKelvie (Head of Department English)
