Rotary Club of Bakersfield Twilight “The Torch” January 11, 2021 A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT LI GIBBS Rotary year 2020-2021 “Rotary Opens Opportunities” Twilighters #WeDoItAtNight HAPPY NEW YEAR TWILIGHT FAMILY! What a privilege and honor it was welcoming the esteemed PDG Sylvia Whitlock as our guest speaker at last week’s meeting, the first female Rotary President, and listen as she spoke about her history-making venture into the world of Rotary. Thank you to everyone who attended and a special shout-out to the many CHS Interact students who zoomed in with us to listen to Sylvia, a Rotary treasure who paved the way for women like me to be able to not only join Rotary but also have the opportunity to make a difference through Rotary and become leaders at every level of Rotary International. It was made even better as everyone joined in early giving us a chance to talk and share our holiday experiences. It was great! Stay tuned for projects and more as we wake from our Holiday slumber and begin to gear up for the second half of this Rotary year. Laura has projects lined up including one benefiting a children’s library that CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is building, more details to follow! BERC has invited our Centennial Interact students to join their Garces Interact in submitting designs for large planter trash containers that will be painted then installed at Rotary Park. The painting and planting will be a collaborative project with BERC, Twilight and Interact. The designs are being worked on as we speak and once submitted, winners will be chosen by The City, we will then begin the painting and planting projects soon after. Laura and Brad and I will share details as soon as we know the design winners and project information. I decided to leave our great Holiday projects in this issue for inspiration and as a thank you to all of you for a GREAT first half and a rousing ending to the year. Let’s make the second half even better! I look forward to seeing you ALL this Wednesday, January 11th for a great program featuring KUZZ Music Director, Kenn McCloud…it’s sure to be a fun time. DON’T MISS IT! For those of you that are wondering…Yes, I am texting you before the meeting with the link so you don’t miss a meeting. You are welcome See you Wednesday! January 6th Twilight Rotary Meeting Photo Gallery Guest Speaker PDG Sylvia Whitlock, PhD First Female Rotary President INSPIRATIONAL MOMENT BY SHONNA SHEARSON I thought about sharing inspirational quotes on new beginnings or lofty goals and dreams. This is the time of resolutions, after all. But the more inspirational quotes I read, the more depressed I got. This year has been hard, and many are fatigued and just can’t fathom claiming 2021 as “our year!”. So I’ll keep it simple, because even when I’m tired or depressed, hope provides the spark to keep moving. Shonna Shearson PAGE 2 !
TWILIGHT HOLIDAY SERVICE PROJECTS 17 Days of Christmas & Christmas for Seniors by Laura Williams, Community Service Director Twilight Rotary members joined together with other local Rotary clubs and others in our community to make the holidays a little brighter for children and seniors in need by par- ticipating in the 17 Days of Christmas and Christmas for Seniors service projects. Twi- light members donated toys for children at the Bakersfield Homeless Center and the Boys and Girls Club Kern County and much needed sundry items for seniors through the East Niles Senior Center. Through the collective efforts of Twilight members and others in our community, children whose families are experiencing homelessness and other financial difficulties and seniors living on limited fixed incomes will have extra hol- iday joy this year." Centennial Interact Club “Teens in Need” Holiday Service Project Submitted by Makenna Moseley, CHS Interact President On Saturday, December 12th, Centennial's Interact Club started off the holiday season with a drive geared towards collecting hygiene products, warm clothing, and blankets for teens in need. Interactors were out collecting for a couple hours Saturday afternoon, receiving over 550 item donations from 42 club members as well as a few Rotarians as well, including East PP Steve and President Li Gibbs, Pamela Elisheva, and Irvin Pike! Twilight Rotary International Project in Nicaragua Global Grant Submitted by Pamela Elisheva, International Service Vince Zaragoza and Pamela Elisheva are working on behalf of Twilight Rotary to collaborate with the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise’s (RCSBS’s) Global Grant Project in Ciudad Sandino, Nicaragua to provide aquaponics systems to 57 fami- lies. What is an aquaponics system? It is a sys- tem that raises and harvests tilapia fish, which uses the wastewater from the fish tank to grow crops. Growing the crops fil- ters the waste water so that it can be re-used in the fish tank. The system was designed and will be manufactured and installed by the Nicaragua Agrarian University. See the photo of the pilot project at the University. Probably more importantly, why Ciudad Sandino in Nicaragua. The RCSBS has had an eight-year relationship with the Rotary Club Ciudad Sandino in improving the two local communities through a water well project, a water distribution system, water filtration systems and improving community health centers and schools. This current Global Grant Project will provide 57 families with the ability to produce 50lbs. of fish and vegetables every six months in their backyards. With a nod from President Li and the approval from our Twilight Foundation Board on a budget of $1000 for this project, Vince and Pamela proposed that the club make a $1470 contribution in total ($700 per aquaponics system for 2 families = $1400, plus a $70 administration fee required by the Ro- tary Foundation equaling 5% of the contribution.) Vince and Pamela proposed that the remaining $470 above the Twilight Foundation contribution could come from fundraising within the Club. At last week’s meeting a presentation made by Pamela resulted in generous contributions totaling $400! Thank you to President Li Gibbs, Robin Paggi, Nancy Pollard and Pamela Elisheva ($100 each) so all that was remaining was the administration fee of $70 contribution, thank you Amy for the donation! We are set to go, YAY! PAGE 5 !
Tapa of The Month: January Brought to you by Fun Meister Jeremy Chicken Breasts in Sherry Sauce An easy to make Andalusian tapa! This tapas recipe originally comes from Andalusía. The chicken breasts are quickly and very easily cooked in sherry sauce. Serve with a dry sherry. *check for vegetarian alternatives below Ingredients for four people • 500 g chicken breast • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 250 ml dry sherry • 2 garlic cloves • 2 sprigs of thyme • Salt, pepper, a little flour for turning • Up to 12 stuffed olives Preparation Cut the chicken breasts into small pieces, about 2 inches each, and coat in flour. Peel the garlic. Heat the olive oil in a pan. Add the meat and heat it at high temperature, season with salt and pepper and then remove from the pan. Next add sherry to the roasting juices, add the thyme and let cook. Mince the garlic and add it. Let the sauce thicken by about one-third. Then add the chicken pieces and leave them in the sauce for about 10-15 minutes. You can also cut olives into slices and add to the mix. Serve warm in a small bowl. Marinated chicken breasts If you would prefer to marinate the chicken breasts, take a little more oil, mix all the in- gredients and pour it over the meat. Allow the meat to sit in the sauce for 4 hours be- fore you cook the meat and serve. Note: make sure that the chicken pieces are well cooked. Preparation time: about 40 minutes. Vegetarian Note: I also make this with mushrooms, you can mix them up or use one kind, deli- cious with porcini and/or baby bellos as an appetizer or portobello mushrooms as a main dish with rice. Li’s Personal Note: I first tenderize by pounding chicken breasts flat, they come out very tender and cook much quicker. PAGE 6 !
