A Note from the Artistic Director

Johannes Brahms was more of an agnostic than a practicing Christian; but the refrains of Martin Luther’s
translation of the Bible were ubiquitous in the surrounding German society of his time, and they implanted
themselves in, and resonated with, his heart, regardless of his specific religious beliefs. Thus, all of the texts,
which he selected himself, come from Martin Luther’s Bible. And Brahms called it a “Requiem” because of
the association of that word with a piece of music having to do with death, not because it was a setting of
the actual Requiem text. Indeed, Brahms did not call it a “German” Requiem because it was in the German
language, but to differentiate it from a “Roman” Requiem (i.e. Catholic). He was seeking to say by way of
his title that this was not a specifically sectarian work the purpose of which was to send a soul on its way in a
religious service (as a traditional Requiem would do), but a concert work that was a personal statement about
death and faith and comfort. It was much more a Requiem for the living than for the dead.

Indeed, one of the things that has struck me about the Requiem as we’ve prepared it for this performance
has been the similarity yet profound differences of the outer movements – the first and the seventh. Both
prominently feature the word “Selig,” “Blessed,” but with a distinct difference. The first movement text
comes from the Beatitudes – “Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.” This is about the
mourner, the bereaved, the one left behind. The grief surrounding loss is so impenetrable at this point that
the individual mourner is not capable of thinking of the deceased, but only him- or herself. In the final
movement, the text comes from the Book of Revelation – “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord, for they
rest from their labors.” And it is finally in the last movement, after the mourner has experienced and worked
through the tumultuous emotions surrounding grief and loss during the first six, that the mourner’s sorrow
is mature enough to look beyond itself and see the deceased. And to acknowledge that they are indeed in a
better place, resting from their labors. It is an incredible, but universally necessary, emotional transformation
that Brahms has charted in this work – rather like the stages of grief so aptly identified by Elizabeth Kübler-
Ross in the 1960’s – here intricately worked out in powerfully emotional music.

Selig sind, die da leid tragen Blessed are they that mourn
Selig sind, die da Leid tragen, denn sie sollen getröstet werden. Blessed are they that mourn; for they shall be comforted.
Die mit Tränen säen, werden mit Freuden ernten. They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.

auf die köstliche Frucht der Erde for the precious fruit of the earth,
und is geduldig darüber, and hath long patience for it,
bis er empfahe den Morgenregen und Abendregen. until he receive the early and latter rain.

Aber des Herrn Wort bleibet in Ewigkeit. But the word of the Lord endureth for ever.

Die Erlöseten des Herrn werden wieder kommen, And the ransomed of the Lord shall return,
und gen Zion kommen mit Jauchzen; and come to Zion with songs
ewige Freude wird über ihrem Haupte sein; and everlasting joy upon their heads:
Freude und Wonne werden sie ergreifen they shall obtain joy and gladness,
und Schmerz und Seufzen wird weg müssen. and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
   		                                                                                         (St. Pet. 1, 24)

Herr, lehre doch mich Lord, make me to know
Herr, lehre doch mich, Lord, make me to know mine end,
daß ein Ende mit mir haben muß, and the measure of my days,
und mein Leben ein Ziel hat, what it is: that I may know
und ich davon muß. how frail I am.
Siehe, meine Tage sind Behold, thou hast made my days
   einer Hand breit vor dir,                                                       as an handbreadth;
und mein Leben ist wie nichts vor dir. and mine age is as nothing before thee:
Ach, wie gar nichts sind alle Menschen, verily every man at his best state
die doch so sicher leben. is altogether vanity.
                                                                                                                                                           6

Sie gehen daher wie ein Schemen, Surely every man walketh in a vain shew:
und machen ihnen viel vergebliche Unruhe; surely they are disquieted in vain:
sie sammeln und wissen nicht he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not
wer es kriegen wird. who shall gather them.
Nun Herr, wess soll ich mich trösten? And now, Lord, what wait I for?
Ich hoffe auf dich. my hope is in thee.

Der Gerechten Seelen But the souls of the righteous
sind in Gottes Hand are in the hand of God,
und keine Qual rühret sie an. and there shall no torment touch them.
     . (Psalm 39, 4-7)

Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen How lovely are thy tabernacles
Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen, How lovely are thy tabernacles,
Herr Zebaoth! O Lord of hosts!
Meine seele verlanget und sehnet sich My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth
nach den Vorhöfen des Herrn; for the courts of the Lord:
mein Leib und Seele freuen sich my heart and my flesh crieth out
in dem lebendigen Gott. for the living God.
Wohl denen, die in deinem Hause wohnen, Blessed are they that dwell in thy house:
die loben dich immerdar. they will be always praising thee.
                                                                (Psalm 84, 1, 2, 4)

Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit Ye now therefore have sorrow
     Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit                         And ye now therefore have sorrow;
aber ich will euch wieder sehen but I will see you again,
und euer Herz soll sich freuen and your heart shall rejoice,
und eure Freude soll neimand von euch nehmen. and your joy no man shall take from you.

Ich will euch trösten, As one whom his mother comforteth,
wie Einen seine Mutter tröstet. so will I comfort you.

     Sehet mich an: Ye see
Ich habe eine kleine Zeit how for a little while
Mühe und Arbeit gehabt I labored and toiled,
und habe großen Trost funden. yet have I found great comfort.
                                                                (St. Jn. 16, 22)

Denn wir haben hie keine bleibende Statt For here we have no continuing place
Denn wir haben hie keine bleibende Statt, For here have we no continuing place,
sondern die zukünftige suchen wir. but we seek one to come.

 Siehe, ich sage euch ein Geheimnis:                             Behold, I shew you a mystery;
Wir werden nicht alle entschlafen, We shall not all sleep,
wir werden aber alle verwandelt werden; but we shall all be changed.
und dasselbige plötzlich, in einem Augenblick, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye
zu der Zeit der letzten Posaune. at the last trump:
Denn es wird die Posaune schallen, for the trumpet shall sound,
und die Toten werden auferstehen unverweslich, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible,
und wir werden verwandelt werden. and we shall be changed.
Dann wird erfüllet werden das Wort, Then shall be brought to pass the saying
das geschrieben steht: that is written,
Der Tod is verschlungen in den Sieg. Death is swallowed up in victory.
Tod, wo ist dein Stachel? O death, where is they sting?
Hölle, wo ist dein Sieg? O grave, where is they victory?

Herr, du bist Würdig Thou art worthy, O Lord,
zu nehmen Preis und Ehre und Kraft, to receive glory and honour and power:
denn du hast alle Dinge geschaffen, for thou hast created all things,
und durch deinen Willen haben, sie das Wesen and for thy pleasure
und sind geschaffen. they are and were created.
                                                                            (Heb. 13, 14)

Selig sind die Toten Blessed are the dead
Selig sind die Toten, die in dem Herrn sterben, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord
 von nun an. from henceforth:
Ja, der Geist spricht, Yea, saith the Spirit,
 daß sie ruhen von ihrer Arbeit;                                 that they may rest from their labours;
denn ihre Werke folgen ihnen nach. and their works do follow them.
                                                                            (Revelation 14, 13)
