Friday 2nd July 2021 Dear Parents, Here we are, at the close of the penultimate week of the academic year. It’s hard to believe we’ve reached that point already but as you know, time races on each week and your children are nearly at the next stage of their school careers! Today, we welcomed 24 of our new pupils for 2021/22 to school for their ‘Move-Up Morning’. I felt it was critical that as many of our new Yarrellians as possible had the opportunity to spend time with their new class teachers and begin the process of making new friendships. Starting a new school is daunting as well as exciting and it was lovely to see the slightly nervous faces at the outset of our activities this morning relax and change into big smiles as they said ‘Adieu’ until next time. Our Year 6 pupils were in charge of welcoming them into their new environments and they did this with great enthusiasm, too! We have enjoyed two marvellous residential trips this week: the first with Year 6 who headed off to Hooke Court on Monday for three days of camping and team-building activities. As I write, I can hear them loudly singing one of their camp-fire songs above me in Friday Club! The children really challenged themselves: the weather wasn’t particularly kind and much of our stay was slightly damp underfoot, but Year 6 kayaked, rafted, sang and orienteered their way through the days with great enthusiasm. It was super to see the children taking themselves out of their comfort zones and work with others so positively. Very many thanks to Mrs Sharpe, Mr Lewis, Mrs McCully, Miss Mullane and Miss Carrington for giving up their time (and overnight sleep!) to this trip. This afternoon, Years 7 and 8 returned from an outdoor adventure residential of their own, too. They went to Burnbake with Cumulus Outdoors and have had the most superb time. They have enjoyed a ‘Total Wipeout’ style afternoon at Dorset Water Park, beach days and this morning rounded their trip off with some fabulous and challenging ‘Coasteering’ on the Purbeck coast. They are now ‘wiped out’ and will benefit from a restorative weekend of sleep and relaxation! Many thanks to Mrs Barnes, Mrs Cunningham and Mrs Green for giving up their time and entering into the trip with such gusto! Next week sees the turn of our younger years’ performances in the marquee. It was exciting seeing it being erected earlier this week and it made us all think of parties and celebrations returning to our lives once more! We are so looking forward to seeing you all at one of our events. At these events and at Prize-Giving, we will be asking for your generosity with our customary retiring collection. This year, we have decided to give our donations to Action for Children, a national charity who have supported the most under- privileged children in this country through the last eighteen months of the pandemic. Their work is invaluable and their volunteers are lifelines for those children whose families are not able to provide them with the love and support you so clearly provide for yours. We should be so grateful for your donations at the performances at Prize-Giving events next week. Have a lovely, hopefully sunny, weekend ahead! All the very best, Ms Sally Weber Head Yarrells School & Nursery Page 1 of 9 Friday 2nd July 2021

Year 6 – Hooke Court Mr T Lewis, Mrs L Sharpe, Mrs S McCully & Miss G Carrington Year 6 spent a wonderful two days at Hooke Court near Beaminster this week. All children saw the full range of weather: from torrential rain on our arrival on Monday to gorgeous sunshine on Wednesday when we departed. The centre that welcomed us was a beautiful sandstone building set in wonderful grounds with a super range of activities for the week. Tents were our accommodation for our stay and the children enjoyed their wonderful bell tents. The first night the children didn't get too much sleep, regardless of the melodic sound of rain on their tents. Each tent was inspected by staff before breakfast and the winning tents were rewarded with some lovely chocolate treats. The winning boys’ tent was Henry, Ben, Robert, Rufus, Tanish and Ibby’s, who all showed great support for each other and even helped each other to find lost belongings on more than one occasion. They also worked well together to clean and tidy their tent on our departure when everyone was very tired. Well done, boys! The winning girls’ tent was Skye, Sasha, Emily, Miriam, Evie, Harriet and Leah’s. Their tent was decked out with suitcase bedside tables, colour coordinated sleeping bags and a winning clean area for their shoes and boots. All the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and rose to the challenge of the activities put on every day for them. We began with team building, testing our communication and particularly our listening! Our evening activity was campfire songs and the children sang their hearts out before retiring to bed with some fantastic songs in their heads. The following morning the site was filled with the "Show me how you bungalow" song as the children continued the fun and games. A great breakfast was enjoyed by all before we started our rotation of activities. Kayaking, raft-building and archery were a real treat, with fantastic fun and laughter echoing around the woodland site. Particular praise must go to Maid Marian Miriam, with our top score of 21, and Harry with our Robin Hood score of 18 in archery. The children threw themselves into activities (and some of them into the lake when kayaking or doing kayak yoga (Molly, Euan, Oli L, George and Eliza!) and hopefully learned a lot during our trip. We managed to organise to see the England victory on our last night, which built the excitement before a murder mystery activity where children searched the grounds finding clues to solve the mystery of the missing security guard! Our children solved the mystery and slept much better on the second night (for the most part) after such a busy day. It was so lovely to see the children running around and paying in the freshly cut grass on our campsite and, aside from exhaustion and a touch of hay fever, they all thoroughly enjoyed their time away. Staff were really impressed with their levels of organisation and enthusiasm. All the children were a joy to take on an event like this and showed resilience and bounce from start to finish. We are certain children will sleep very well in their own beds after the excitement of a two-day residential which feels like it is marking the return to normality after so much time of missing out on opportunities like this. Sleep well children, we know your teachers and support staff will too this week!! Yarrells School & Nursery Page 3 of 9 Friday 2nd July 2021
Year 8 – Trip to the Purbecks Mrs C Cunningham & Mrs E Barnes The Year 8’s had a wonderful time at Burnbake on residential with Cumulus. They enjoyed a glorious Wednesday afternoon in the sunshine at Dorset Waterpark and learnt some bush craft skills in the woods. They have made some wonderful memories to treasure and definitely slept well! Get the washing machines ready…. Yarrells School & Nursery Page 4 of 9 Friday 2nd July 2021
Early Years & Pre-Prep All aboard the good ship Greenwood! This week has been all about treasure maps and X marks the spot! We have made our own maps and we went on a treasure hunt around the school during Wild Woods. It was a little tricky as we had to keep an eye out for signs and use the corresponding map to lead the way. Eventually we made it to the woods where we found lots of golden coins in a beautiful treasure chest, waiting just for us! We definitely looked the part as well with a shark bite and eye patch face paints! This Friday was Moving Up Morning and, whilst we were a little bit nervous, it was lovely to meet our new teachers. It is really important for us to have this opportunity to meet our new teachers and class to ensure a smooth transition onto our next step of our learning journey. To prepare us for this next step we have been engaging in circle times talking about change and why it is okay to be worried but to also think about the exciting opportunities we will have. Year 1 – Deep Sea Detectives Miss A Denison Our current topic in Year 1 is 'Deep Sea Detectives', where we have been learning all about the ocean and its habitats. We have also learnt about some very special people such as David Attenborough and Sylvia Earle who have taught us how to keep the ocean clean and safe. On Thursday, Sylvia Earle set us a very special 'Deep Sea Detective' mission and when we arrived at our swimming lesson, we were devastated to find the pool polluted with rubbish! We completed our mission; which was to save the sea animals from plastic pollution, and we then made posters to educate the rest of the school about reusing, recycling and reducing our plastic waste; all of which can take hundreds of years to decompose. Sylvia Earle contacted us the next day to thank us for our efforts to save the oceans and even awarded each of us with a special certificate. We feel very proud of ourselves and will continue to inspire others to become 'Deep Sea Detectives', just like us! Yarrells School & Nursery Page 5 of 9 Friday 2nd July 2021
Yarrells Sport News Yarrells School Tennis Championships 2021 Mr M Bujak reports… The waiting is over... Over the last two weeks, players from Year 3 to Year 8 were competing in the second phase of the Yarrells Tennis Championship. We could all feel the real excitement around the school. We witnessed an unbelievable level of commitment from our young champions, with phenomenal tennis across all ages.
