Netball Program Background In 1995, at the request of a number of female students, Aranmore staff investigated the introduction of Netball into the College curriculum as a specialist sport. During the initial stages of the program development, Aranmore staff consulted with WA Netball staff to ensure the program content and the philosophy behind its inception matched WA Netball’s vision for the sport. After a great deal of careful planning, Netball was included as a specialised subject at the College for the first time, in 1996. Now entering its 16th year, Aranmore’s Specialist Netball Program continues to set a high standard for athletes hoping to excel in Netball. Aranmore Netball Program Philosophy In developing the Specialist Netball Program, the underlying philosophy of the program is the promotion of Netball and maintaining young women’s participation in the sport at a variety of levels, including participation as coaches, umpires and managers. Netball Program Aims • To provide an opportunity for female athletes in our school population to excel and be recognised as athletes • That the Program should develop the skills of ALL interested athletes, not just high performing athletes • To provide extra-curricular activities and experiences that secondary school students with an interest in Netball would not normally be able to access through their school community • To develop our athletes in all aspects of the sport of Netball so that we graduate well rounded and knowledgeable young women who will feed into Netball pathways in Western Australia on a variety of levels • That support be provided to monitor the academic progress of Netball Program athletes to ensure academic standards are maintained • To provide a Program that is creative, enjoyable and maintains athlete’s interest Netball WA Endorsement Aranmore’s Netball Program is endorsed by Netball WA and the Program staff maintain regular contact with Netball WA officials. Aranmore Netball staff are involved with Netball WA programs and maintain strong links with the wider Netball community. The Netball Program Structure Netball is currently offered as a subject that can be studied in Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 respectively. At Year 7 and 8 level, students participate in a specialist class that coincides with Physical Education classes. Netball is offered as a year elective in Year 9 and Year 10. The upper school subject is a Course of Study unit, offering students the opportunity to utilise the subject as a university entrance course. Skill Development In terms of player development, our program is designed with skill progression in mind. Specific physical and mental skills, plus knowledge of the method and tactics of the game are incorporated in a progressive manner so athletes can move from the basics of Netball to some quite advanced playing skills and game strategies by the completion of the program in Year 12. While the Specialised Netball Program is designed to develop the skills and knowledge of any secondary school aged netballer keen to progress to an elite level, a major priority is to encourage the participation of female
students in sport, both at the College and local community level. A secondary aim is to encourage female students to develop and maintain active and healthy lifestyles. Hence, players of all levels are encouraged to join the Program. (Please note: Students do not have to be receiving a Scholarship to be included in the Netball Program). Extra-curricular Netball Students are invited to participate in a number of extra-curricular Netball activities, including playing in tournaments organised by School Sport WA – namely, the High Schools’ Cup Competition, Saturday Netball competitions (affiliated with WA Netball), interschool tournaments and relevant Development Clinics offered by local Netball Associations. Senior Touring Team The College also offers senior students the opportunity to play in a College touring team that competes interstate in the Waverley International Schools Championships or the Gold Coast Netball Carnival. This tournament is held during the first week of July each year. Aranmore has successfully competed in these tournaments since 1996. The Senior Touring Team is open to Year 10 - 12 students. Junior Touring Team As of 2001, a Junior Tour Team has been included in the Specialised Netball Program. The week-long tour takes place in the South West of Western Australia and is held in Term Three. The tour is designed to provide Year 7, 8 and 9 athletes with the opportunity to practise the skills being developed in the Program in a friendly, but competitive, tournament style environment. Our Netballers as Coaches and Umpires A portion of time is allocated in the Netball Program at each Year level, to develop our students’ coaching and umpiring skills. At the completion of Year 12, students will have had the opportunity to graduate with All Australian Netball recognised coaching and umpiring qualifications. During the Program, students will also have developed skills in the areas of First Aid, Injury Prevention and Management, Sports Nutrition and Mental Skills Training (Sports Psychology). Netball Scholarships Netball Scholarships are made available through the College Board. Each Scholarship covers a certain percentage of the applicant’s tuition fees at the College. Netball Scholarships are allocated on a sliding scale from 10 – 100% depending on achievements of each athlete in the Netball WA Pathway and their participation in College activities and academic pursuits. As a general rule, scholarship percentages are as follows: • Year 7: 10-15% • Year 8: 15-20% • Year 9: 20-25% • Year 10: 30-35% • Year 11 & Year 12: 40-60% All Scholarships are formally reviewed at the completion of Term One, Term Two and Semester Two. Alterations may be made to the Scholarship percentages at these times. All Scholarship holders are required to re-apply at the end of each year and as a general rule, scholarship value will increase if expectations are being met. (Please see the section on Scholarship Eligibility.)
